The thing that bothers me about the numbers, besides not trusting the Chinese, is the ratio of recovered to fatalities.

Anyone who trusts anything the Chicoms say is not playing with a full deck. It has been that way since they kicked Chiang Kai Shek out.

It’s tricky and somewhat arbitrary to classify someone as “recovered” from something. It’s not tricky at all to say someone’s dead.

Well, thank goodness this has been settled....

The World Health Organization says the official name for the disease caused by the new coronavirus is Covid-2019.
"We now have a name for the disease and it's Covid-19," WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters in Geneva.
It comes after the death toll from the virus passed 1,000. Tens of thousands of people have been infected.
The word coronavirus refers to the group of viruses it belongs to, rather than the latest strain.
Researchers have been calling for an official name to avoid confusion and stigmatisation of any group or country.

Yay for the economy!

BEIJING (Reuters) - Chinese President Xi Jinping warned top officials last week that efforts to contain the new coronavirus had gone too far, threatening the country’s economy, sources told Reuters, days before Beijing rolled out measures to soften the blow.

With growth at its slowest in nearly three decades, China’s leaders seem eager to strike a balance between protecting an already-slowing economy and stamping out an epidemic that has killed more than 1,000 people and infected more than 40,000.

After reviewing reports on the outbreak from the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and other economic departments, Xi told local officials during a Feb 3 meeting of the Politburo’s Standing Committee that some of the actions taken to contain the virus are harming the economy, said two people familiar with the meeting, who declined to be named because of the sensitivity of the matter.

So Panda Bear knows that the economy is going to crater due to this and knows that if they font go back to work the domino effect may force him out of power much faster than an uprising due to everybody is dying with the WhuFlu?

I realize the national media has a hard time breaking away from impeachment or election coverage, but I'm somewhat surprised the quarantined Diamond Princess cruise ship isn't a bigger story on a daily basis.

There are hundreds of Americans on board, some of which have tested positive for coronavirus. The number of infected people continues to climb. We have a poster on this thread who gets updates from friends on board, yet none of the national media seems to have interviews or details of the conditions on the ship. What are people doing? What is the medical care like when people are infected? What is the daily screening procedure? What's the morale? Has anyone dropped a baby over the edge yet?

It baffles me that this story isn't a top headline. I would expect it to be somewhat similar to the Thai soccer team that was trapped in a cave in terms of media coverage.

They did interview a couple on GMA friday, I think. That's really the only time I get to watch the news, so i have no idea about the rest of the weekend.

A traveler was planning to bring a small package of tiny dead birds from China as cat food, but U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials stepped in.

Agricultural specialists seized a packet of small dead birds that was in a traveler’s luggage at the Washington Dulles International Airport, CBP said in a news release.

This seems like it would be up Nancy Grace’s alley.

The birds were set on fire with the Department of Agriculture’s approval, CBP said.

I wonder how much money China contributes to WHO?   I’m guessing not their fair share especially considering most of these viruses start there.

Unless WHO is going to make them stop fucking with/eating the local rabid wildlife, it's kind of a moot point.

It is not how much they give the organization, it is how much they give certain people. Qatar FIFA Federation out front should have told you.

Then you need much better sources of news than reddit or facebook

Perhaps I do.  Can you point me to where the WHO or the CDC or the US Surgeon General or similar type experts that speak with authority call out China? The only thing I see is those type organizations bending over backwards to not offend China.

C.D.C. and W.H.O. Offers to Help China Have Been Ignored for Weeks

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/07/health/cdc-coronavirus-china.html

Did you actually read the article?

The NY Times is ragging on China, but the WHO, the CDC, and the US Secretary of Health and Human Services never do. The Times even paraphrase anonymous 'experts' who "speaking anonymously for fear of upsetting diplomatic relations".

Some quotes from that article:

Quote

Normally, teams from the agency’s Epidemic Intelligence Service can be in the air within 24 hours.    But no invitation has come — and no one can publicly explain why.   The World Health Organization, which made a similar offer about two weeks ago, appears to be facing the same cold shoulder, though a spokeswoman said it is just “sorting out arrangements.”     ...

On Jan. 29, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the W.H.O.’s director general, returned from a brief trip to China full of praise for President Xi Jinping and the country’s extraordinarily aggressive response...

They never go on the record and say things like:  The Chinese are not forth coming.  The Chinese numbers are understated by a large amount.   The Chinese are misstating when this started to spread. The situation in China is much worse than the Chinese are saying.

Nope. None of that. China is doing a great job.  BTW you should totally trust us, we're experts.

Too bad. Elon could have invented an electric miniaturized spaceship that navigates your blood vessels and attacks the coronavirus with miniaturized flamethrowers.

And then accused everybody of buggering little boys.
