Wrong. Educate yourself before making these claims. There is a difference between N95 respirators and generic face coverings.

I have not seen any type of face covering at a store since February, that includes the generic dust masks for construction/painting/etc .  Then again I haven’t been scouring every store to find them.  But I’ve been to HD, Lowe’s and other places multiple times in the last month and haven’t seen any of those either.  Educate me on how to Educate myself on what the difference bwteeen the masks are, since I’m well fucking in tune to said differences.

Right, because -- guess what? -- people purchased them. If someone has a mask, there's no reason to leave in on a shelf at home. That makes no sense. He should wear it. If someone doesn't have a mask, then he should cover his face with something else. It's not that hard.

in terms of N95 respirators and generic face coverings.. a quick search shows:

However, some N95 respirators are intended for use in a health care setting. Specifically, single-use, disposable respiratory protective devices used and worn by health care personnel during procedures to protect both the patient and health care personnel from the transfer of microorganisms, body fluids, and particulate material.

https://www.fda.gov/medical-devices/personal-protective-equipment-infection-control/n95-respirators-and-surgical-masks-face-masks#s4

note in bold because previous discussions indicated "general" masks were only beneficial to the carrier and reducing transmitting and had no benefit to people not infected.

Are the expecting California to be a helluva lot worse than we think, if they are getting the hospital ship and other stuff?   I mean, we know it’s bad, but it sounds like it’s going to be really bad.   Would explain the shelter in place.

I’d assume California acted first and fastest instead of “waiting and see” like our politicians seem to have done and continuing to do.

It’s really mind bottling that people don’t understand we don’t have enough masks for medical personnel but expect the government to mandate everyone use them.

There are enough masks for the 100 million people in the Philippines.  The cialis/viagra vendors are all selling masks now. Most are not N95 or surgical grade but they are better than nothing for wearing outside with other people around. There is no excuse for people in the us to have nothing to wear as a mask.

I have two N95 masks I bought over a month ago, when my order from the previous month was canceled. I alternate them so they dry between uses and wash them every couple days. I realize that washing them reduces their effectiveness,  but it will have to do for now.

That is bullshit as evident from the many countries effectively controlling the spread by having everyone wear a mask. If for no other reason, it forces asymptomatic carriers or people with mild symptoms to wear a mask. It also at the very least minimizes face touching by uninfected people so to say it has no benefit is pure bullshit.

Which Surlyster (or their friend) was a patient on the same floor at BAMC as the covid patients?

San Antonio has recorded its first death from the coronavirus, city officials said Sunday.

The patient, a woman in her 80s, was being treated at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio and had a history of underlying health issues. She died Saturday in hospice care. The exact location is unknown and still being investigated. No other information about the patient or her case was released.

don't disagree.   was pointing out the difference between generic masks and health grade.  also, referenced the source (.gov website) and won't go CR.  i think it's safe to assume there are different grades of masks in terms or mitigation for both carrier and non-carrier.

That would be me.  My buddy was undergoing chemo, and is set for surgery on April 6 since the chemo didn’t fully do it’s job, on the same floor as the COVID patients.

Some other things that help.  My wife, and 2 non symptom children are in great physical health.  They are swimmers and my wife is a dietician, BS in nutrition from aggy.  I am almost 50 so I am no spring chicken but do consume a lot of fruits and vegetables, hit them hard.  Stay away from processed sugar.  Processed sugar kills the immune system.

This is perhaps the finest post in the history of Surly. Thank you sir. Holy fucking shit.

" Bookmark this. When the doubling time of deaths* gets above 3 days, we will have begun to get past the runaway period of the pandemic. Note the current doubling times for China (35 days) & South Korea (12 days). *not cases, which can be under-diagnosed."

Using those numbers and that doubling rate today, if we implemented shelter in place tonight on a national scale, in 20 days (appx lag phase time for decreased death rate to be reflected by starting extreme social distancing), the US would have about 25-30,000 deaths.  Tonight Italy is at 5,400 deaths and the world total to date right now is 14,600.  Previous actions taken by WA, NY, CA, will hopefully drag those numbers down some, as every single day prior that involved some percent of total with home shelter can have a major effect on final numbers later.

thanks for your commentary on the symptoms here. I am 42 and for the most part my symptoms are mild. Just respiratory (not tested or confirmed though). I was wondering on herbal bits, thanks for sharing. My wife is also a dietitian and we generally have a hold on what to eat, not to eat, etc.

I am looking for isatis root now. should be some somewhere here where i love.

Only non essential business are shut down - things like bars, gyms, movie theaters. Essential businesses are still open, just like here. That includes teachers, cannabis dealers, daycare, laundry services, taxi drivers, plumbers, and exterminators.

Can you go outside to walk your dog?  Go to the park in California under the lockdown?  Go to the grocery store?  YES, YES, YES

Do you need a special tag to drive to work or around town? NO

So what’s the big difference?  Or do people just feel the need to lay blame and say *someone* is not doing their job?

I have decided to stick with the one living with me for the duration of the lockdown in order to minimize the possibility that a women could inoculate me with a large amount of virus. I will reassess the situation when the lockdown gets lifted as there are excellent opportunities with some of the hottest women around. Chasing and catching pussy will likely be the death of me, but hopefully many years in the future.

I feel we’re almost 2 weeks into the nation beginning to shut most social activities down, 10 days since the NBA started the trend. + schools businesses etc so hopefully that number won’t jump as high as these numbers are when we were in normal life ~20 days ago

There are still tons of jobs still ongoing that aren’t essential though where contamination is highly likely especially as community spread numbers rise.

That is one of the interesting thing about this pandemic. You can have diarrhea, a headache for 3 days, feel weak for a few days with maybe a sleight fever and then have minor asthma for a few weeks and still not know whether you had it or not. You can always think, well I didn't have a cough or loss of smell, or a 103 temperature for 3 days, so maybe it was something else. It would nice to be able to say that you already had it and then walk around town without being in fear.

I hear you, and you're right.  What you're pointing out as having happened over the past two weeks in a rolling pattern can have a major effect on lowering cases and deaths 2-3 weeks from now possibly initially reflected within the next 10 days.  I'm reassured that things are heading in the right direction.  However it's not going to be easy helping the sheer numbers of affected that are already inevitable.  Deadly serious stuff.

Essential work is what? Probably 20-30% of the work force in Texas? There are tons of people in the state of Texas still going to work everyday that what we’re currently doing does not stop. A shelter in place would stop a majority of the work force in said state to stop this further eliminating the risk. Right now is the most critical time to fight this and attempt to flatten the curve and California started earlier than we are. Our governor literally said we’re going to wait and see if we need to shelter in place. He is choosing to be reactive and not proactive in protecting the state and it’s citizens.

I cannot understand why we are not doing the same. This situation is so dire that we are killing the economy, locking people up, killing the market, putting countless people out of work, preparing a trillion+ stimulus package, etc.-- yet our leaders are not mandating masks?? Even surgical masks, if worn by an infected person, would slow the transmission. So why is the president and CDC not mandating or even encouraging the use of masks? It's mind bottling.

Where do you propose people buy them?

Yep. Those numbers are nuts. There are 28 million or so in Texas. 2% of the population is going to die? Not just 2% of the positive testing people, or 2% of the infected people, but 2% of everyone dies? Nope.

If 2% of the population get it that’s roughly 575k people infected and if 2% of those die that’s roughly 11.5k deaths. Just in Texas alone.

Wow.  Good luck. I got some of the stuff you recommended upstream in this thread but I am not infected AFIAK and am wondering if I should hold off until I am.  Seems like a lot of stuff that is being tested to help (ARBs, etc) might also make it easier to get. Also a little scared to take these things I know nothing about regarding side effects, etc.

In Ft Worth tests are only available to the people at risk and first responders.  Regardless, the sick here are plotted all over the Tarrant Co map....  It's spreading.  I had Flu A six weeks ago for sure.  It's the only thing possible that met the symptoms.  My brother had the squirts for 3 days and then went into major shutdown.  Extreme fatigue.  We hung out on a Saturday which was his day 1 of symptoms.  Major squirts.  Downhill from there.  Mine kicked on Tuesday, 3 days.  When you get it and have symptoms, you won't need a test to confirm.

I will say this.  If you are youngish and healthy, don't fear it.  Herd immunity is real and by having immunity, you protect the vulnerable by killing it via your immunity and not passing it on.  It's going to be a long road.

Isatis Extract

It's real.  Nothing could stink that bad and not be crap.  It's also Chinese so I don't own it.
