Unless whatever they claim is proved true by the WHO, you can't really trust anything from them. We are better to look at places like South Korea which have been fighting it for as nearly as long and also aren't actively spreading misinformation.

I think you can still get a lot of helpful info outside of just hard numbers.

I’ve been monitoring this as well. The big flaw is the demographics of folks that own and use a fancy AF thermometer.

And tons of nonsymptomatic people are taking their temperature at least daily now.  Under normal circumstances, people aren't taking their temperature when they feel fine.

So if you want a silver lining, maybe if you squint you see a flattening of our case doubling line to something closer to three days or a little longer.  Major concern with what happens to our death rate when we saturate health care capacity. Stay in your houses your filthy fucking animals.

My impression is that masks have been a common health tool in some Asian countries for years so they're quick to jump to masks. America's culture just isn't there. Yet.
It does seem like a good idea not from necessary protecting you but protecting others from you.  And if everyone wore a mask, it would seem like it would reduce infections. It's hard to think otherwise. I have zero idea where we would get enough masks for everyone.

FYI - there are some of the reusable cotton/fabric masks still available on Amazon. Most of them are “fashionable”, IE they’re made out of Hello Kitty fabric or tie dye or have little graphics on them but they’ll do the job in a pinch.

You might feel like a teenage KPop fangirl wearing them but better than wearing nothing I guess!

On shit like this I tend to be skeptical.

Customer:  "Are these n95?"

Chinese distributor that will disappear in a month: "N95? Yeah, sure.  Of course.  In fact, they're N96 - no, wait, N99.  N100?  N220?"

Not sure what it says about me but I agree with about half the comments there.

The quarantines feel like a joke if we allow 80% of businesses to continue operating as an essential business. I live in FW which has been “stay at home” since Tuesday and my neighborhood golf course had tons of golfers out today. Seriously, golf is acceptable right now but as an ophthalmologist I can’t see my patients. Went to Central Market to get groceries and it was packed with people. No one even cared about maintaining any kind of radius.

Really frustrating to have these half measures in place because they seem mostly ineffective. Either lock it all down or admit defeat and let the virus do what it’s gonna do.

Same  I know people have said they've noticed a difference in Austin, but it's probably more to do with the Universities, Schools, Government, and Tech industries shut down.

Everyone I know in Dallas, Ft Worth, and Houston, plus were I am in Central Texas(Waco/Temple/Killeen) have basically all said nothing has changed.  Yes Schools and Bars/Movies are closed.  Salons, Barbers, and Tattoo Shops too...but EVERYTHING else is operating business as usual.

This is where I am. Pool construction is okay, but treating patients is a no go? Not only does it seem relatively pointless, it will cause me to be out of work much, much longer than it should have.

Yeah I'm not sure why anyone is shut down at this point.  We've literally had plenty of people shopping for cars(no one has bought surprisingly) even though we're under Shelter in Place, which means other than going to work, or grocery shopping/medical reasons, you're supposed to stay at home.

Guess shopping for Cars is essential.

Yes.  Seems hard to believe our shelter-in-place orders will be lifted anytime soon. I assume we will adjust as needed but I can't see schools opening up, and everyday back to normal soon.  We're still in a situation where new cases and deaths are still increasing and many of the states are still in the early stages.

We're only 2 weeks removed from 3000 (confirmed) cases in the US when many thought this was some cruise ship or Washington retirement home tragedy.  Now we're at 100,000 cases.  Some might have a friend of a friend that tested positive but most don't have a close relative or friend who is.  And at 1800 deaths, one of the deceased victims is a name on the news not even an acquaintance.

If we somehow grow another 33x times in ~2 more weeks to 3m infected and some high death count, people will panic.

It's definitely going to grow.  I know big wigs are worried about the economy, but seriously and actual shut down of everything for 2 weeks would basically stop this virus where it's at, or limit it much more than all the models show.

I'm just so frustrated because, especially around me, no one seems to think being open and working and going about business as usual, is hurting at all.

Agree - it borders on criminal for those who know it would make a difference.

The PPE shortages in hospitals is gross malfeasance.

Damn. This is just one part of what will overwhelm hospitals.

America already has a physician shortage.

We can’t afford to lose our doctors who are best trained for this crisis.

ChiTownDoc Newdoc - how many docs intubate patients routinely? I would imagine some specialists or FPs don’t do that regularly.

I get some of the "so what is the point" talk but with regard to Texas.  BUT looking at the good side of things (at least in its urban centers)

Children in some districts just finished their third week of not being together passing this around in schools (spring break and two weeks extra) other counties it is the second week (break and one week) in both instances children did not go on SB trips and come back and pass their shit all around the classroom - win as I think this is a massively underrated spreader of all this shit and at least if they went away and caught it somewhere they didn't come back and bring it to their whole fucking classroom

Yes there are still too many people likely lined up around stores sometimes even in the stores at offices, etc.   It could be better BUT there is very very very few who ever in all of this have spent time mashed together in public transportation...put simply our usually shitty car culture and urban sprawl takes a massive "social squashing" transmission vector out of the equation almost completely - call it a minor win could be better but definitely could be a lot worse

It's now approaching 3 weeks since most large scale events were brought down completely, NBA, MLB, SXSW, Concerts etc....again people still going in to work etc is a problem but its going to take a lot longer to burn through in those scattered environments than again socially squashing tens/hundreds of thousands of people together, fueling em up with alcohol, having no regard for sanitation etc and then continuing to turn them loose to do it again the next night or three nights from now etc.  -Pretty big win when you look at some of the thoughts people are having about effect of Mardi Gras in LA, the Champions League match in Lombardy etc etc.

It's going to get worse and probably at this point should just shut this shit down for two weeks but there are a lot of things in play will help slow things.

SIAP

I heard on a recent podcast the theory that health care workers are particularly susceptible to the most severe cases due to the high dosing of virus exposure they may face.

Keep them all in your thoughts and prayers.

Ohio issued its shelter in place order on the 21st and yesterday they started shutting down the violators.

Oh by all means I completely understand how it has helped with the Schools being shut down, as well as large gatherings/entertainment venues.

BUT I'll strongly disagree with the bolded.  It's not going to take that much longer, not when just about every business you can think of is open. Car Dealerships, just about every retail store.  People still don't practice distancing in grocery stores either.

I do agree with you it'll get worse and the best case is to shut everything down.  And at best, everything we've done, has ONLY slowed it...it'll still be pretty massive IMO.

That is why the US is discussing universal do not resuscitate orders.  Resuscitation of COVID victims is just too dangerous for the healthcare providers

I wonder if their shelter in place is as broad in the exemptions as pretty much all the ones in Texas.

Or at least I wonder if they're going taking care of the people who are just driving around for no essential reason(not going to work/grocery store/medical reason) like we should be doing.

Started to question 14 day incubation period in my mind since the main spike in Louisiana should have started on the March 15th  and not March 22nd because the largest parades are on Feb 22nd. Then I remembered the 5 to 7 day lag in test results.

There is a lot of bullshit in that Q&A though. His answers to the questions about the timeline are deflections about China's actions, especially when the whistelblower was brought before the local officials on January 3rd, and it's highly likely that China is cooking their books on the community spread to focus only on imported cases at this point so that they can blame foreign powers.

It's interesting to read but hard to trust considering China's actions throughout this entire process

exactly.  there is nothing in that article that we don't already know and yes some of what he is saying is BS.
