CR: COVID-19 --Political Talk

The CDC is holding a telebriefing for reporters according to BNO Newsroom. Will be interested in how the markets are going to respond. I've heard (unverified by me) that more of those passengers brought to US have been reported with fevers. Fever =/ cornonavirus, but will probably turn out to be given the contagion factor.

*35 cases in the US now. 14 of those patients are cruise passengers who were flown out with their fellow cruisers, 21 are Americans who were repatriated from other locations. I expect the cruise passengers number to climb especially with the recent news that one can be asymptomatic and spread the virus. Viruses that can do that seem to be successful in finding new hosts obviously.

On the political front, this is going to get quite interesting after the CDC being on record in the news against confirmed afflicted cruise passengers being allowed on the same airplane as the rest of the evacuees. The patients (not just from the ship)  have been split up with some going to Nebraska, some to Texas, and some to California. Latest record I have if from USA Today: 11 hospitalized in NE, 5 quarantined in Texas, and 2 in California. What I couldn't tell from the article is if any of the others are being quarantined or not prior to going home.

The HHS and some of the other health organizations are in disarray right now due to sackings, resignations, retirements and budget cuts. The CDC has been meeting with those top officials that are left, but the State Department and DHS were the ones that made the call regarding bringing the patients home, so should the virus spread within the US and that window is closing, the disorganization will be problematic. The outside social media disrupters will have a field day and  between fear of contagion and the upcoming elections, I am not optimistic that it will go well.

*My math may be off on this number. The numbers in the US are changing rapidly and the CDC website is behind on publishing its transcripts.

If you make judgments based on what will save the economy rather than people, it is best to let it run its course like we do with the flu with only limited self-isolation and treatment of only the most severe cases. The China response does the worse possible economic damage, so it will be interesting to see how long they keep it up.

In countries with limited resources and little ability to isolate people for more than a day or two at a time, it makes no sense to even try to stop it. Countries like the Philippines, Indonesia, Iran, North Korea, and India are examples of places where it is hopeless to try to stop it once 10,000 or more are infected. With a 1% CFR, death coming after 3 weeks after infection on average, and infections doubling every 6 days, by the time a country has 10 deaths they are already over 10,000 infections.

Markets are getting slammed.  This shit will very likely plunge the global economy into recession, result in 1000s of deaths in the U.S. and  yield a Sanders victory in November presuming that elections aren't suspended in the wake of Trump's imposition of martial law.

Right? Influenza numbers in the US alone:

CDC estimates that influenza has resulted in between 9 million – 45 million illnesses, between 140,000 – 810,000 hospitalizations and between 12,000 – 61,000 deaths annually since 2010.

Is the panic simply because there’s no ‘flu shot’ for covid? Flu shots must offer some real psychological reassurance because it’s not like the annual flu shot is exactly a bullseye.  Whole lotta people die from flu every year.

If you think the economic effects will hurt Trump, just imagine the direct effect it could have on his voting base.  This virus leaves the young relatively untouched but is deadly for seniors.  Last I saw, the fatality rate is almost 15% for the over-80 demographic and not much lower for those in their 70s.  And it is almost 2x more fatal for men compared to women.

A disease that disproportionately kills off old men would be very bad for Trump at the ballot box.

Add to it, China has had "too many" people for a century or so.  Killing off 1MM, mostly olds, could be good for them.  And as stated, don't fight it.  Let fate pick the winners and losers.

I will bet anyone here $100 right now that this sort of angle -- that Covid 19 is part of the Clinton cabal (babies being eaten and all that) strategy to take over the world or somesuch nonsense -- will be voiced by some Trumpist mouthpiece (Alex Jones, etc.) within the next 30 days.

No fucking way am I taking that bet, lol.  And the angle will be that they wanted to tank the global economy to prevent Trump from being re-elected.

Tom Cotton’s fever dream:

The only Level 4 Laboratory in Wuhan was funded by the Clinton Global Initiative?

Then China released it into the public.... purposefully bungled the response.... to hurt the global economy and thereby trying to hurt Trumps re-election.

Actually, if no Trumpkin steps up to the plate in the next couple days, I want to take the bet.  $100 to the charity or political cause of the winner's choice.  You'll win, and I want you to shout it from the fucking rooftops.

Edit:  And I'll give you till the DNC as a time window for the story to be published.  Ends Thursday, July 19th.

This Chinese billionaire (?) has to be beyond hysterical, or something.  But while I'm not one to doubt Chinese efficiency, images of bodies being sent down flumes from upper stories isn't helping.

Spoiler

The probability of this being an engineered virus is greater than zero.  And if it comes out that it was engineered in the L4 lab and we are on the cusp/in a global recession by election day, then the message Trump will be able to deliver is "I'm right on China and stick with me.  They caused the global slowdown".

So my cousin lives in Japan and is pissed about what the government is not doing.  They are not testing people on the regular.  That way they do not have numbers to report.  They are advising people with fevers to avoid work/public.  They are reporting the deaths that are confirmed, but not sure how accurate they are.  She deduces that it's about Olympics being moved if the numbers are staggering.  The news coverage in her city isn't making a huge deal about the virus.  But she lives around other Americans that have their kids go to the same school, so they have more details from stateside family/friends than most.  Not sure if swimmers can breathe through an N-95 mask in the water or not, but let's go for gold.

The US and Canada are doing the same thing. They are not testing unless there is in obvious link, so it will be too late when people start dying.

No matter what happens (global pandemic, economy tanking, etc) the dotard and the Rs will blame the Dems.  They don't even need a real reason.  Just "it's the Dem's fault!" will work among their base.  They don't live in reality.  So for all those thinking an economic slow down or rise of this virus will hurt the dotard's re-election chances: it won't.

Rush Limbaugh has lung cancer, which is a precondition that makes him particularly vulnerable to this virus.  He’s also a fat male in his late 60s, all of which are additional risk factors.  If he comes into contact with COVID-19, there’s a very good chance it will kill him.

(more on tweeter but you get the point)

This has definitely been the case since the get-go. Go back and look through the first few pages of the Current Events version of this thread where a lot of our right-leaning posters were posting very sketchy tweets spreading conspiracies about the source of the virus as well as being critical of Chinese culture. It felt like they were posting from agenda-driven, alt-right fringe accounts (some with very few followers) that were deliberately spreading misinformation in a coordinated manner. Looks like the message has now taken hold in the more mainstream mass media of the Right.

Not to belabor the point, but we (all of us) need to get much better at recognizing this shit. This is from a couple of days ago:

Thousands of Russian-linked social media accounts have launched a coordinated effort to spread misinformation and alarm about coronavirus, disrupting global efforts to fight the epidemic, US officials have said.

The disinformation campaign promotes unfounded conspiracy theories that the US is behind the new coronavirus outbreak, in an apparent bid to damage America’s image around the world.

State department officials tasked with combatting Russian disinformation told Agence France-Presse (AFP) false personas were being used on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to advance Russian talking points in multiple languages.

“Russia’s intent is to sow discord and undermine US institutions and alliances from within, including through covert and coercive malign influence campaigns,” said Philip Reeker, the acting assistant secretary of state for Europe and Eurasia.

“By spreading disinformation about coronavirus, Russian malign actors are once again choosing to threaten public safety by distracting from the global health response,” he said.

Some accounts have falsely claimed the US is waging “economic war on China” and that the virus is a biological weapon manufactured by the CIA.

Exactly, you will start seeing that "it's the market reacting to Crazy Socialist Bernie taking the lead".  And that will be that.
