A true stroke of genius if you ask me.

We’re going to rub this virus out if we all just stiffen up, get off our high horse, and come together as one nation.

Hey @zork - wouldn't it help civic-minded corporations if the President invoked the Defense Production Act for production of ventilators, respirators, PPE, and masks? They could use that order to do the right thing - if the CEO has a greedy board or shareholders.  The corps would be paid - so what's the harm?

He's in NY shithead

I know that, his past posts said he was in food management at a restaurant IIRC.

Why is NYC the epicenter?  Not talking about whether it is or not, I'm interested in why he thinks it has developed into the epicenter if he has any ideas on why it is or has become that.

I guess so, I am not familiar with the DPA.

most big cities are getting hit, likely due to airports and city centers.  la, sf, sea, nyc, atl all make sense considering the flights from asia to west coast and europe to east coast.  public transportation doesn't help either.

are you really having trouble understanding why the cities that are getting hit are getting hit?

funny, i had this conversation with the wife this morning.  the two people under her (she works in pr) are in their early 20's, and neither makes much money.  for the next 2-3 months, their hours are scaled back to where they're basically making what california pays in unemployment.  but if you add $600 per week, then yeah, it makes way more sense for them to bounce and watch netflix all day and deal with everything in july (collecting 3 months of a ~$50k/yr salary).

and i think the quit/fired/lay off rules are waived during an emergency, but either way, they could quit based on lost hours and claim the full amount i'm sure.

she was like, "shit, can i do that?"  i explained that the math doesn't work as well for her, but she could if she wanted to.  then she was like, "well, if they figure this out and quit then i'm fucking quitting too."

Now see what I don't get is why the same thinking isn't applied to businesses. If they aren't expected to operate in such a way that they can handle a few months without income, why in the fuck do we hold individuals with families and children to higher standards?

Businesses already got a gargantuan tax cut that doesn't roll back in a couple years and they put every penny into buying back stocks and laying off employees to push stock prices higher and higher. They didn't save responsibly or invest it into something useful for a future emergency. So why do they get massive bailouts but the american people dont?

Why is it the epicenter is all around you and others who post from there?  Do you have any hypothesis' as to why that is?

Its a densely populated city, global economic hub, and is the number 1 tourist destination in the USA.  Covid will make it to your small isolated Siberian town one day too.  When it does, don't count on Putin to send you any aid.

this is amazing:

"Listen up dip--ts and sensible people," Brown's post began. "I might not have the best bedside [manner]. I might not put you at ease like the Governor does, but I don't care. You need to realize that this is a serious ordeal. In fact, it's a big f--cking deal. Stay at home."

It's a global for center for trade, communications, finance, tourism, you name it, and it was not protected by your incompetent orange shitstain of a god. And don't go off on your shitty density argument. There are plenty of cities around the world with denser populations that have far fewer cases (NYC ranked 114th globally).

And zork - do you agree with Republican Independent Amash on the best "cure" for this slowdown?

I have mixed feelings on the yuge debt being taken on for this.  My family of 4 is less than $150k AGI after deductions so it appears we will get a check.  I'll take it.

We don't need it at this point.  We'll likely add it to the emergency fund and then use it to pay down one of the mortgages if/when this blows over.  We might need toilet paper in a week or two.

My feelings have been stated for years on these Texas boards that we should be rather draconian on spending cuts or at least hold the budget at nominal same same from year to year till we grow our way out of debt.  Let the politicians decide where the fixed set if dollars goes.

I am aware of the reported exacerbation of the great depression in '29-early '30's with the lack of govt spending then vs the 2008 greasing the wheels Quantitative Easing, buying down debt to keep rates low, etc, etc,  to allow collapses in critical systems to be reduced.  It seems like a lot of debt.  Where it goes is a question I don't think I can answer.

in zork's defense, there are probably more car accidents in nyc as well.  checkmate, libs.

Penelope had mentioned one person in nyc dying every 9 minutes before this crisis.  Seems like a big deal.

I live in DFW.  We aren't as dense though to be sure.  My allergies kick up this time of year.  Had a couple times in the past few weeks that I was thinking if I had CV or not.  Fortunately the basic allergy medicine stopped the snot and I'm chalking it up to allergy.  Fuck Putin, BTW.

Thread on the battle between Lindsey Graham/Hannity and Bernie Sanders over the CV Relief Bill.

Graham et al are saying the $600 in federal unemployment benefits is too much because “people will quit their jobs and stay home and make more money.”

(Despite the fact that you usually can’t quit a job and collect unemployment)

Bernie is threatening to gut the corporate bailouts if Graham and his chums get Trump to oppose the unemployment increase.

it's a complete strawman.  you can't quit and if you're terminated for cause it can be fought by the employer.

unfortunately, the big cities in texas will also get their share.  especially considering how long it took to go on lockdown.  they're just 7-10 days behind.

but hey, at least trump has already approved the disaster declaration money for his buddy abbott.  his pals gavin and andrew are waiting by the phone.

My hot take: Grassley is a moron. Bernie is doing what Bernie does: calling bullshit.  Thank God there are people like him still around.  I'm not sure if it matters anymore delegate-wise but he's showing what kind of president he would make during crunch time.

sure.  looks like people are going to die.  with a ~50% chance of dying if you get serious enough to make it to a not always going to be available full featured ventilator ER bed it is going to be grim for those who are weakened enough or unlucky enough in their personal life situation to allow it to fuck them up to that point.  Our older relatives are staying the fuck away from everyone as much a possible.

FYI, in case anybody is wondering:

In 10 days, coronavirus will pass cancer in terms of American deaths per day.

Another data point:  in 11 days (one day after cancer) coronavirus will pass vehicular deaths in terms of American deaths per day.

Anybody find comfort in these projections?

lulz, we are so fucking dumb

it''s fun to yell about on twitter, but i'm not sure how true it is.

in the case of the underlings at my wife's company, they had their hours/wages cut, so i think they qualify, at least out here.  15 years ago when i worked for a total piece of shit, i quit and got fired about a dozen times.  the final straw was probably my call, but who can remember.  i told the unemployment office that "we had a difference of opinion over the future of the company and my department was getting absorbed into another one, and i had anxiety about how long my job would be necessary."

that was all they needed to hear.  california is very pro-employee, so maybe we're the exception.  but i can't imagine anyone kicking up a fuss during a global pandemic.

Healthy, young people are dying. We need to stop acting like it’s just old people.

I think this will starting hitting home as well if we start to compare the total dead to the amount of soldiers who have died in past conflicts.

I find comfort in knowing that another mechanism of death is removed from the pool of things that can be stupidly compared to covid-19.

for the last time, the whv's are not the issue here.

Since TeamR has no answers and certainly aren't going to advance any plan, they have to talk about something.  So they spend their time setting up people to blame.  But you are right, I just hope others begin to see this pattern, finally.

It's the first time, maybe ever, the Olympics will be on an odd year. It's always on an even year. Or so they tell me.

It would probably blow his mind that the Winter Olympics are also even years too.

You can quit for a variety of reasons and still collect unemployment benefits.

Leaving to care for kids (who are no longer in school) is one.

Any change to your job duties or work hours (sounds like your case) is another.
