CR: COVID-19 --Political Talk

Donald Trump Cliff Notes:

I will allow states to reopen on their own timelines.  I am all-powerful, but I will cede some of my power to the governors, as if they are in charge of their states or something.

If the death toll ends up higher than the projections, the governors will bear full responsibility for their choice to reopen when they did.

And any states that don't reopen immediately will be sued.

Well, I wouldn't say "wasted".  There have been a lot of "non federal" /"non state" things that have happened to lessen the effect going forward.

There is in fact more testing in place right now than then.  Not enough, but we are learning from it.  There have been two studies in California that indicate 3-4% of the population may have already had the virus and the benefits that come with that.  The virus has picked off a lot of "low hanging fruit", so one would think that might bode well for the CFR going forward.  Medical community has strengthened its supply chain.  The populous is more agreeable to restriction than in the beginning.  We have ruled out some snake oil treatments.  We have made some progress on the vaccine side of things and what was once an 18 month job is now 16 months.   We are at some unknown % of infection which brings us that much closer to the herd immunity % required, in theory. We have some different attack models from other counties and do not have to reinvent the wheel should we consider doing those in the future.

All of that stuff is not really quantifiable at this point, but in sum it is significant.

But we are in a difficult place.  We cannot keep doing what we are doing and we cannot yet move forward either, at least not without great risk or loss of life.  We simply have not done the work that needs to be done at this point.

Id fucking kill for 3 more weeks of quarantine. It would save us thousands of lives moving forward

In some areas, there will be testing, but based on what we've seen so far, it will be a haphazard whack-a-mole testing. No matter how organized a state is, without a coherent comprehensive national strategy administered by the states equally, it will end up like (see below):

The number of deaths won’t matter.  At some point the argument from Trump will be that those people were going to die anyways from something so maybe it wasn’t even Corona Virus.  We can’t really be sure what killed those 100K people over the last 6 months.  His base will eat it up and Fox News and the rest of his mouthpieces will spout that story to the masses.

Expand

As pointed out in the Republican Party thread, this will subsumed into his re-election strategy. The protests funded by orgs sympathetic to him (and reported on by all media without analysis and verification for the most part), trumpeting the "overhype" by Democratic politicians and scientific "experts" who wish to control the populace because they are "socialists," the backing of the courts to ensure that voting will be compromised by forbidding vote by mail.

No matter how much they cheat, how many they kill, doesn't matter.

for those tracking the numbers, worldometer just went over 45k.  we're gonna be at 50k before the weekend and probably 60k by may 1st.

Since we hit our daily high of new cases on April 4 of 34,403 the numbers have been hovering around 30,000 with that wonky weekend thing happening.  So this death rate is going to continue for awhile.  As New York slows down, the lower portion of the dance card is also filling in.  This thing just seems to want to stick around.

is this based on previous epidemics that required worldwide stay-at-home orders, followed by haphazard willy-nilly openings of states?

i think 60k by august is the best possible scenario if everyone stayed at home until august.  and even then it's probably more like 75k.  but that's not what's happening.

Expand

No, its based on epidemics without haphazard government intervention. But, if either the virus quickly ran through the population or if we truly shut everything down, a sudden decline like that wouldn't be surprising.

I was just making the point that plenty of models and scenarios could show something exactly like that, and in fact the IHME model does show that. But, as I said, I don't think that is what we will see here.

This shit misses the point.  Kristol bemoans the lunacy of the fringe, but assumes it’s representative of the majority of Republicans.  I get it. The GOP rank and file has adopted a lot of nutball shit recently.

But this seems different.  Polls show that the vast majority of even Republicans have sensible views on coronavirus and social distancing. This isn’t a typical partisan split.  For some reason, Trump and his surrogates are pushing an extreme agenda and trying to creat a new wedge issue.  But it’s not really taking.  At least not yet.

I think the better approach to these make-believe protests is to point out that both sides of the aisle largely disagree with them and view the protesters as dangerous morons.  This is a rare opportunity for both sides to unite on an issue opposite Trump. Many Republicans are finding their support of Trump cracking on this issue.  Welcome them into the fold.  If instead you find them guilty by association, that will only push them to side with Trump on something they otherwise might not.

Pretty simple solution really. Don’t forgive the loans. Charge them a normal interest rate.

When they bitch and sue that that wasn’t the deal. Request a jury trial.

They will cave. If they don’t?

That will be the shortest trial and jury deliberation in history.

With all due respect, I'll believe that when I see it.  Up to know, GOP support for Trump has been exactly that of a cult.  And cults stay in the building while it burns, they drink the poison kool aid, so forgive me if I don't expect them to see the light.

Shockingly, Governor MeeMaw had a press conference today and she’s not even gonna consider opening things up until the state meets a bunch of metrics like 14 consecutive days of decreasing positive cases, a minimum threshold of daily tests, threshold for available ICU beds etc.

I guess she figures since she already won her primary that she has no chance of losing so she’s actually doing the right thing.

I cannot believe Georgia and Florida and Texas and effing Wisconsin are stealing our “Hold Mah Beer” trophy.

So far Texas and Abbott haven’t done anything crazy. Opening up some state parks so long as people practice social distancing and allowing retail to have curbside delivery is pretty sane in my opinion. I realize the sensationalist headlines imply otherwise.

I mean, he brings some of it on himself when he names it "Strike Force to Reopen Texas."  That's downright Trumpian.

But I agree that the moves have been surprisingly level-headed so far.  And he's got to be careful since we're such an undertested state.  If he rushes and it blows up, it's all on him and his fucktarded LG.

Good point. But he’s playing to the dipshit trumpkins crowd while making ok decisions so far. I can live with that, especially compared to the shitshow that’s going on in the White House.

Look at the polls. Here’s one example: https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/poll-81-percent-say-keep-social-distancing-despite-damage-to-economy/ar-BB12FzvF Social distancing enjoys bipartisan support.

Assuming the Others disagree with you on every issue is a good way to guarantee continued divisiveness.  Republicans support some stupid shit these days.  But a sizable portion of them agree with Democrats on social distancing.  That presents a rare opportunity to reach across the aisle.  It won’t last forever.  And assuming the worst based on past experience despite data to the contrary will ensure it won’t last long.

As a public service announcement I would like to advocate that all my fellow surlyhorn posters and lurkers should start looking into taking Vitamin D supplements. Most everything else you can get from eating good food, but not that one.

It’s not quite as important right now since we are currently maintaining social distancing (for the most part), and won’t be as important in the summer months (because of the sun and sunshine) but once the fall hits in certain places especially up north, and especially in the winter months (everywhere), it could be the difference between life and death with this new virus where most won’t have immunity.

Yes, something as simple as that could and likely does make a huge difference. And no,  I have no financial interest in Vitamin D supplement companies.
