CR: COVID-19 --Political Talk

It sounds like it was equipment sterilization.  Basically a refrigerator sized box that you put things in to sterilize, which would be useful if it had actually worked.  It didn't work though.

I've got an RN childhood "friend" who lives in Burnet posting that the Covid vaccines are not "FDA approved" with the implication being they're not safe and that we're being used as guinea pigs. To add insult to injury, she ended the post with sheep emoticons and a "Baaaaa" for good measure.

She works at Seton Ascension Highland Lakes if you want to know where to avoid getting your health care.

I get that. It's just so fucking shocking to see it from someone you've known since the first grade to publicly profess a belief that goes against what her profession supposedly stands for by sharing an idea that is actually harmful to public health. I mean, I knew there were healthcare workers like that out there; I just didn't know I knew one.

I worked with a fellow trauma ICU nurse for four years before discovering that she's an anti-vax and general conspiracy theorist with political views all over the place. Thank god she's on days and I only have to interact with her in person for the length of time it takes to get report on my patients.

For many years, I knew folks who never felt the urge to ever travel anywhere.  I'm still new to the area I'm in, which maybe is why I find myself feeling much the same these days.  My only travel desires lately are all by car, as I want to explore this area, and this new-to-me State.

Some days I know that feeling will wear off.  Other days, I read stories like this one.  The story posting date is 3 days old, so there's a good chance it is further up the thread.  Apologies if that is the case.

DENVER (KDVR) — A Cañon City man struck a flight attendant and urinated on a seat on a Denver-bound Alaska Airlines flight after refusing to wear a face mask, according to an arrest affidavit.

Landon Perry Grier, 24, is charged with interfering with a flight crew. If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Colorado, the incident took place on Alaska Airlines flight 1474 from Seattle to Denver on March 9.

Airline staff asked Grier to wear a face covering eight to 10 times, as required by the company.

“Grier initially ignored the flight attendant, but then struck her arm,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office said in a statement.

Later, two other flight attendants responded to a call button that had been pressed by a passenger who reported Grier was urinating in his seat area.

One of the flight attendants saw Grier peeing and asked him to sit down.

According to the affidavit, the flight attendant then “observed passenger Grier seated in his seat with his penis out of his pants and she told him to put his penis back in his pants. He responded, ‘I have to pee.'”

A passenger also reported that Grier urinated on a paper bag she was carrying.

The passengers seated near Grier were then reseated, and the captain was alerted to the issue.

“(A flight attendant) stated passenger Grier’s actions delayed her preparation of the aircraft cabin for landing for approximately ten minutes, endangering the safety of the passengers,” the affidavit states.

Meanwhile, the captain and first officer were dealing with an unrelated mechanical issue and were preparing to make an emergency landing at Denver International Airport.

“(The captain) stated the passenger disruption occurred during a high work load environment while they were descending over the mountains in turbulent conditions. The disruption caused the pilot crew to divert attention from their emergency landing preparation,” the affidavit stated.

Grier told investigators he was returning to Colorado after working at a gold mine in Alaska. Before leaving Alaska, he had one beer. When connecting in Seattle, he had three to four additional beers and “a couple of shots” before boarding the plane to Denver, according to the affidavit. He also reportedly took an over-the-counter pain reliever because he had body aches from working.

“He said he fell asleep on the plane and awoke to being yelled at by the flight attendants who told him he was peeing. He stated he had no recollection of hitting the flight attendant and didn’t
know if he was peeing,” the affidavit stated.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation conducted the investigation with help from the Denver Police Department.

Fucking hypocritical bastards.  Spent the better part of a year downplaying Covid, vaccines, etc and behind the scenes were lobbying to get on a list for a shot.

https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2021/03/how-officials-in-trumps-white-house-scrambled-to-score-covid-vaccinations

  Quote

In late December and early January, as COVID-19 vaccines were just beginning their chaotic rollout to the states, a secretive scramble took place inside the Trump White House. One after another, political appointees at very high levels approached chief of staff Mark Meadows and members of the National Security Council to ask a favor: They wanted to be on the list.

Expand

  Quote

It was, to be sure, the ultimate VIP list: On it were the names of U.S. government officials whose work was considered so essential that they needed to be vaccinated against COVID-19 from a limited allotment that would otherwise have gone to the general public. The allotment was intended to protect career staff who could not telecommute (such as White House butlers), critical workers in the field (such as Secret Service agents), and those in the line of presidential succession (such as the secretary of state). The question of who was eligible in an outgoing administration, with just weeks remaining until the inauguration of a new president, was complex. To make the cut your role had to be “essential” to national functions.

Expand

  Quote

The quest to get on the White House list—which was closely guarded by Meadows’s office and a small cadre of NSC officials—attracted an array of supplicants. They ranged from the representatives of cabinet secretaries to young White House desk jockeys to those prepared to leverage their connections to President Donald Trump’s senior adviser and son-in-law, Jared Kushner.

Listening to the Stuff you Missed in History Class 2 part podcast on the 1918 Pandemic.  Definitely interesting.  LOTS of parallels.  Those that do not learn history are doomed to repeat it.  Seems really fucking obvious here.

Not a political post, but a thank you to @Bama Chick and anyone else reading involved in the creation or administration of this vaccine.  I live overseas and the past month or so, watching the U.S. spring into action (albeit with some bumps) and begin kicking ass at getting our huge continent spanning nation vaccinated has been inspiring.  A feeling that we can finally get shit done again, like the America I grew up believing again.  It's not limited to just me, plenty of foreigners are feeling like the U.S. is getting its groove back.

Russia and China will make some hay by viewing their shots as a foreign policy tool first and a public health at home tool second, but in the long run I think people understand and admire the fact that the big democracies are taking care of their citizens.

re: china.

per a friend teaching english there, everything is normal (well, for china).  they took this shit seriously and intervened in a way that maybe only a totalitarian state can.  lock downs were actual lock downs with people locked into their apartments and soldiers outside patrolling the streets and delivering food.  compare our "well you might need to wait in line a bit before going into home depot wearing a napkin loosely tied around your mouth" homeworking period.  going back there in november,* he was locked into a hotel room with food delivered to him for two weeks.  no jaunts to mexico for the weekend and self-imposed quarantine which consists of fox news appearances.

so, china doesn't need to use vaccine domestically, unlike us.   edit: per the bloomberg tracker, china has the second most doses administered, behind the US.  obviously china has multiples of our population so they're way behind in % terms, but it's not like they're vaxxing no one.

*he was in SE asia doing hookers and blow over chinese new year when shit really hit the fan

Thanks for checking on that (vaccination per tracker); I was thinking how it seemed less than optimal to not administer a vaccine assuming that travel will resume normal levels at some point.

I'm running out of steam fighting the idiot neighbors on NextDoor.  It sure feels like there is a new surge of "masks don't work, in fact they make things worse" anti-science.

I'm starting to get a glimpse of what it must have been like to be in a pitched battle in WW2, although at maybe 1% as bad.  Motherfucker.

Just saw a doctor on Fox News, Dr. Makary, who was saying people should hold off on their second dose of the vaccines until 12 weeks not the 4 weeks that Pfizer and Moderna are doing.  Any idea where this is coming from?  Legit reasoning or is this guy wrong?  I find it very concerning when the American population is already dumb and we start giving different view points on vaccines that will totally confuse them.  I just wonder if its like putting a doctor on national TV and he starts promoting good heart health can be achieved by never exercising and eating fast food as much as you can.  I would think putting out wrong information can be pretty dangerous to idiots.

In all seriousness, why we give a shit if the rural Trumpkins turn this down as long as everyone else has access?  If they die, they die.

The only issue I have with this is when one of these fuckers gets the Covid bad enough to be disabled and a long hauler for months (or maybe ever), then don't use any tax dollars on their treatment or general welfare.   This is the risk they are taking, and there's no need the rest of us need to pay the consequences if that risk goes south.
