Nothing will work. How can someone "own the libz" if they end up getting the vaccine? They would rather die.

That’s the damndest thing I’ve ever seen.  This has to be some natural population control or something that has overtaken these people’s minds.  I can’t tell you how many times I’ve just swallowed my pride and survived another day in various scenarios in life.  I guess if enough of them die off, we can vote their asshole leaders out of office.

Why are you watching tucker?

Why do Texas fans scroll texags?  I like to know what the right is freaking out about so I can arm myself before I see my parents on the weekends. My mom voted for Trump twice, but generally avoids talking about it because she's so embarrassed at what a dipshit Trump is. Stepfather, father, and in laws are all full blown MAGAt and love them some Tucker.  If I watch the intro to Tucker Carlson -- or can stomach 15 minutes of Michael Berry on the way to meet them -- I can be forewarned what the discussion will entail.

It was on Tucker last night. Apparently the US is in a race with the Aussies to see who can be the mostest Communistest Socialistest country ever. Oz in the lead because they are restricting booze too.

lulz. US isn't close to what is happening here.

imagine your mother/father/loved one dying in Lousianna and you in Texas cannot go visit them. Imagine being in Singapore for 1 year - completely separated from your family and homeless, and you cannot get a flight to your house in Sydney. More like 1.5 years now. Now imagine that by 10s of thousands of people getting absolutely buttfucked by the Oz government there and many examples inbetween that can take up an entire thread here.

Yes, and taking away booze from uber drop offs at an entire apartment complex in total lockdown.

Complete opposite of anything happening anywhere in America. And yet Tuckers right there spreading stupid as he does.

I managed to run into some right wing south africans on my walk this AM. they - gasp - watch tucker carlson for news. here in fucking Oz. its like a the dirty reverse Murdoch syndrome or something. Australia is of course North Korea and these people want to be free like in the US. But of course they watch tucker who says same same. of course nothing adds up but it never fucking does anyway when outrage is all people are addicted to.

We need to shut off the internet for a month. And cable news. Lord save us from ourselves

hey - you homies made it to Saturday too. I am happy for you. Can't wait for the fucking game tomorrow.

https://www.kff.org/coronavirus-covid-19/issue-brief/latest-data-on-covid-19-vaccinations-race-ethnicity/

Quote

Black people have received smaller shares of vaccinations compared to their shares of cases and the total population in more than half of states reporting data. In the remaining reporting states, the share of vaccinations they have received is similar to their shares of cases and the total population. In most reporting states, the share of vaccinations received by Black people is smaller than their share of deaths. For example, in the District of Columbia, Black people have received 44% of vaccinations, while they make up 56% of cases, 71% of deaths, and 46% of the total population.

Reflecting disproportionate levels of infection, Hispanic people have received smaller shares of vaccinations compared to their shares of cases in most reporting states. Their share of vaccinations is similar or higher than their shares of deaths in most reporting states. However, in some states it remains lower. For example, in California, 31% of vaccinations have gone to Hispanic people, while they account for 61% of cases, 47% of deaths, and 40% of the total population in the state.

I'm pretty sure that the vast majority of these particular groups of people who will be negatively affected by this mandate are NOT Trump fans, and probably wouldn't even know who 'Tucker Carson' is.

This isn't discussed. All that's focused on is white GOP. But there are more diverse considerations here.

A study by Tufts University shows that Black people are among the most vaccine hesitant demographic groups, with 18% saying they are very unlikely to get vaccinated. The Black community also has the lowest vaccination rate of any racial group, with only 51% of Black Americans vaccinated compared to the 62% vaccination rate of white non-Hispanic populations.

And I'm starting to think we are way beyond what is in the public interest.

Nevada Congresswoman Dina Titus:

“But, I believe that when you give the information to people and they realize how it works and why it’s so important – for them to keep their jobs, keep their children in school, keep their houses – that you’ll find a pretty high rate of compliance,”

There is a reason we are focusing on the White GOP vaccine hesitancy and not the black vaccine hesitancy. It has to do with math

There’s something to be said for this take. There’s a whole ghoulish thread here of posters tap dancing on the graves of people who are too stupid to avoid medical advice from Tucker Carlson and Joe Rogan.

Yelling at people who hate you won’t work. It doesn’t matter how maddening that is. It’s going to take a different approach (or just pay them already).

No, the issue is that it hasn't been fully tried yet.

Stupid people need to be told they're stupid and that they should be ashamed of it. Repeatedly. You're right that yelling is ineffective, but shame is an effective tool in human society and always has been. Isolate, ostracize, shame. Nothing wrong with that.

Edited to clarify that I'm talking about people who have the natural intellectual capacity not to be idiots, but who have chosen ignorance and stupidity for whatever reason (generally political right now).

It has been. It's also good if blacks and browns who have lagged behind some other groups in vaccination rates are incentivized to get the vaccine.

Do you have a reason for thinking that, or is it just one of those things that you think?

Yes, Black people could do better. And as for Hispanic, If I were giving out 20 dollar bills to Mexican roofers who own masks, I'd never have to reach for my wallet.

But you have to compare like to like. Yes, White people as a whole are vaxxing up better. But the White team is leaning heavily on people in places like New England for their numbers. If you restrict it to one state (let's use Alabama, because it's where I sit and these are the people who will breathe on me,) you have a population where people have the same pubic education, same state leaders and institutions, and on vaxxes, the country-ass majority Black counties do better than the country-ass majority White counties. See the map:

https://data.news-leader.com/covid-19-vaccine-tracker/alabama/01/

Since most on here are not au courant with which Alabama counties are in which camp, the two highest-vax-level counties to the south and west are part of the old plantation belt, which you can see heading over past Montgomery like a belt, ie the Black Belt. These are places where you may see horror stories about open sewage or lack of opportunity, but they are getting their shots.

The four counties towards the north and east that are the laggards? Mini-West-Virginias.

The same thing appears to be true in urban counties-- Jefferson (Birmingham) is majority White but with a large Black population, better numbers by far than Shelby (directly south of it) which is suburban sprawl of the DFW flavor. Sure, some of the Jefferson County Whites are book-readin sissies like me, but quite a few are pipe-hitting ex-steel-mill workers. In any case, for Jefferson to have a 20-point lead over whiter Shelby, everybody has to be stepping up at a decent rate.

I'm probably deep in the weeds at this point for anybody not deeply interested in this state, but even where neighboring counties have the same color on the map, if you check the numbers, the one that is a higher % Black has a higher % vaxxed.

tldr: Alabama Black people generally higher vax rate than Alabama White people.

Last night my wife suddenly started feeling ill, despite a booster 2 weeks ago, and I had to run to PeoplesRx as they’re the only ones in town with at-home tests…at almost twice the list price.  She works in a school and was in a classroom with a confirmed case for 30m, masked up.  It was negative and she feels fine today.

So I did my usual Friday/Saturday night ‘roaming AM stations looking for football to listen to’ and came across the rare conservative speaking calmly about the pandemic (or Biden, or masks, or Democrats, etc).

Seems the new narrative is ‘talk to your doctor who knows best, keep the government out of health freedoms…I have had lymphoma so I got the vaccine on my docs recommendation…this Biden mandate is going to get struck down, but talk to a professional to help you make that choice’.

So…progress?  Maybe?  Probably just one sane guy in a boat amongst a sea of adrift, gritting lunatics…but I found that sensible, at least, even if it probably won’t make any impact.  At least compared to the other 15+ AM talk shows that were just yelling Alex Jones-types, it give me the slightest glimmer that someone’s minds were being changed vs just filled with righteous indignation and blame.

I'd like to see somebody say that their freedom is important, and then actually go and do something original, like... anything original.

Instead, it's freedom to conform to some online herd that all acts the same.

I mean, this Satoshi Smith guy, with his Bitcoin fiery eyes. Yo Satoshi, change your name to a frequency heard only by hummingbirds, and collect 17th century Austrian glassware. You're free to do it, you imitating gimp.

Same around here. They are probably all owned by the same person.

I don't like using "Trump Voters" as a stand-in for anti-vaxxers, because it was a probable Trump voter who made sure that many of my near-and-dear got their shots. Maybe "Flat-Earther" or some such.

Took my mom to the ER at 4:30 this morning. The doctor started talking to her about Biden’s unconstitutional mandate.

Outgrowth of the Precious Metals/Gun Show/MREs in the Basement Vault crowd.

As somebody who has enjoyed Pork Patties, plinking, shiny objects, and owns a miniscule amount of Magic Computer Money, I don't judge, I just get a kick out of reading the bumper stickers.

Like guns or gold, cryptocurrency doesn't need a central government to be recognized. It's very libertarian

I think it would be great if Black Americans would as a group get more vaccines.  I think the same about white Americans, Hispanic Americans, Asian Americans, Other Americans.

Basically, I think it would be great if All Americans got vaccinated.

Now, when it comes to a specific demographic, it might be wise . . . bear with me here, this is tricky stuff . . . to figure out if there are any differing motivations that might explain why at least some have not been vaccinated.  For instance, maybe 50% of unvaccinated White Americans might say "fuck the libs, my freedoms!", whereas 50% of unvaccinated Black Americans might say "uh, you've discriminated against us and experimented on us for over 4 centuries, I'm a little reluctant".  You get the idea.

Now that we are armed with that information, we target our approach to each group . . . hang on, like I said, this is tricky . . . differently.

For the Irony Awards, Macon County (home of the actual town of Tuskegee, yeah that Tuskegee) has better vax numbers than neighboring Lee County, home of Auburn University.

Back to COVID. Heard through the grapevine and saw on the ag site that a student died at A&M this week. Actually, I should clarify that it was said to me that it was an A&M student but I don't know if they lived on campus or in the town.

Here is some more information regarding the 20 year old A&M student....was a sophomore biomedical science major, valedictorian from Glen Rose, Texas. Name was Kirstyn Katherine Ahuero and passed away due to complications from COVID in Bryan, Texas. Death will be recorded in Somervell County (county of residence).

Presumably this biomed science major was not vaccinated and ended up dying as a result?  How very aggy ...

It didn't say, but probably not. I do know that there was a student (not her) who was railing against professors in the vet school regarding mask wearing. Apparently since there is a hospital there, it can be done due to the wording in the EO by Abbott, but somehow that was tyranny. Their university is odd in that they have a money generating undergraduate program through the vet school for biomedical science which essentially is like a pre-med major, and then they also have a biology major through the college of science and also a biomed program through the college of engineering. Very confusing, but the way I understand it, it's all political or some such. One of my children looked into it when they were in high school and decided it was not relevant to her interests.

I expect the university will not change their mitigation strategies regarding COVID, however. No online and if a student tests positive, required to quarantine. If student is in a dorm, will have to leave campus. I think a lot of schools are going that route. Pushes the problem back home or out into the community, and the 'not my problem' flow chart continues.....
