the fact that the gop lists include "outrageous" and "frivolous" add-ons like minimum wage and voter protection tells me all i need to know.

Those are pre-programmed, canned, rubber stamped reflexes by them via 40-odd years of insane, systematic indoctrination and fanatic commitment to believing in things that cannot be believed by a serious person.

“Hogwash!!! All we need to do is throw more taxpayer money at the ultra wealthy and the corporations, and then it’ll trickle down to benefit the population!!! That’s the solution to everything!!! Everyone else needs to pull themselves up by their bootstraps!!! Harrumph harrumph harrumph!!!”

Hopefully this has been mentioned in this thread, but maybe not.  Shittiest reporting ever?

https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/man-dies-after-ingesting-chloroquine-attempt-prevent-coronavirus-n1167166

"I saw it sitting on the back shelf and thought, 'Hey, isn't that the stuff they're talking about on TV?'"

The couple — both in their 60s and potentially at higher risk for complications of the virus — decided to mix a small amount of the substance with a liquid and drink it as a way to prevent the coronavirus....

On Monday, Banner Health, based in Arizona, said the couple took the additive called chloroquine phosphate.

The couple unfortunately equated the chloroquine phosphate in their fish treatment with the medication —known by its generic name, hydroxychloroquine — that has recently been touted as a possible treatment for COVID-19, which has infected more than 42,000 people in the U.S. and killed at least 462.

As I said previously on this thread, it's predictable.  When the Titanic sinks, that barrel that is floating amongst the debris is going to have a pretty fucking high approval rating.  Yeah, everytime you try to climb up on it, it rolls over and dumps you back into the freezing water.  But at least you can thrown an arm over it and it'll keep you afloat.

But that's not to say that when the Carpathia arrives that anybody is going to choose a barrel over the ship.  And that's going to be your choice in November.

And let's get something real straight--the barrel's approval ratings in this case aren't particularly high.  After 9/11, George W. Bush's approval ratings shot up above 80%.  That's pretty standard for a president during a national emergency.  That we are in a national emergency and Trump can't get his approval rating above 50% should be really alarming for any Republican.

Finally, Trump's approval rating on this crisis is up slightly at a time when he is monopolizing the airways on the issue.  Democrats are busy legislating.  And I think Biden is right to hold his fire and let the thing play out.  But it is playing out into a complete disaster.  And as we get toward Fall, the ads will come out that spell out the magnitude of the disaster and the complicity of Trump in the making of that disaster.  When that happens, his ratings have no place to go but down.

To that point, the Emerson poll that had Trump at +1 on his approval rating, also had him losing the general election to Biden or Bernie by six points.

Monmouth had Trump at even, but losing to Biden by 3 points.

When the video footage in the ERs start coming back, I don't see Trump faring any better. There are still a lot of Americans who don't understand what is happening.

So just heard on CNN that 90K NYers have been tested and 24K came back positive.  If that's accurate...holy shit.

Unless you play for the NBA, testing is still mostly limited to symptomatic people who seek testing so that positive rate isn't surprising.  The actual infected rate is probably triple or quadruple the reported rate when you consider asymptomatic people and people toughing out mild to moderate infections without treatment.

I would imagine the Ds are trying to get some things in now, like the voting measures because they know that once the corporations get their bail out money McConnell will shut everything down and blame it on the pandemic.   It's really more a measure for planning ahead now, so the election officials throughout the country can have more time to adjust and prepare.   If it's done later (if at all) then more chaos which will lead to calls of voter fraud when trump loses.

The rest for the most part could be bargaining chips.  It's a bad look, but no worse than a half trillion dollar cookie jar for any corporation Trump deems "in trouble"

I do have to wonder if this half trillion relief is intended to prevent the 17T debt bubble currently held the big corps.

i can't remember exact timing, but i think after phase 3 (the one they're working on now) they're going to be out of session for a minute.  so it really is now or never on some of these.

i know it will never happen, but i still want the dems to say, "we'll give you the $500bb as long as there is a specific provision that "no trump property gets any bailout money".  the r's would be fools not to accept it, as they would have free rein to help every other crony, but trump would fucking short circuit if they allowed it.  talk about sowing discord.  this would be delicious.

Water Hazard

Why is BP trying to stop the Gulf of Mexico oil leak with golf balls?

By BRIAN PALMER

MAY 18, 20107:30 PM

The Macondo well has released more than 5 million gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico and continues to spew at least 200,000 gallons per day. A mile-long straw inserted into the well is now directing 40 percent of the flow into tankers, but BP is still looking for a permanent fix. They may try clogging the faulty blowout preventer with shredded tires, knotted rope, and golf balls in a process known as a “junk shot.” Wait, golf balls?

Boomers would gladly sacrifice their kids and grandkids if it meant their taxes would go down.

Wow. Boomers don't love their children. Boomers don't care about the earth. Boomers are a homogenized group we should all hate. They sound kind of inhuman. I hear they have tails. In fact, I'm hearing that Boomers poisoned the wells to create this epidemic.

“You want to help stop the pandemic by helping people in other countries? What are you, fucking retarded?”

It hasn't occured to him that refugees might be infected as well.  Giving them health care and decent living conditions might be a good idea OVERALL.  And humane.  Even Christian, if that's your thing.

Hopefully after Fauci is fired by Trump the DNC hires him on as a consultant.

He's probably the last piece Biden's camp is looking for to counter Trump's dog and pony shows with a real factual briefing.

Imagine if the media chose to air Biden over Trump?   Trump would start holding 24/7 PCs to filibuster the airwaves.

so is this bill going to give trump/munchin free rein to disperse corp welfare wherever/however they see fit?

I don’t think so.  Pelosi indicated about an hour ago Mnuchin accepted the House’s oversight protocols for the bailout fund.

amusing observation... posters in this thread flinging shit with the rest, then annointing themselves thread police on the DT thread to scold anybody that dares question leadership in current decisions affecting us all.

Biden would hire him in a minute.  Might have to work pro bono until after the election, but being able to tell the American people the truth without inadvertently tacitly endorsing Trump's ongoing stupidity would be compensation enough, via saved lives.  You wonder if pondering the death of the guy who took the President's advice weighs on Fouci?

I just flipped to FOX and apparently the actual questions are way too tough and Trump needs some softballs. So... instead of news conferences the US public will get rallies on state TV.  Putin must be so very, very proud of his protege.

I wonder who will come out better. it'll be cool to see how each state is affected by different techniques of isolation.

lol Trump is being swayed by that garbage piece Richard Epstein shat out last week.  For being so nice in person, Epstein is a pretty evil dude.

This is the garbage in question, which now contains the least personally accountable "correction and addendum" ever written:

Quote

Correction & Addendum, added March 24, 2020:

That estimate is ten times greater than the 500 number I erroneously put in the initial draft of the essay, and it, too, could prove somewhat optimistic. But any possible error rate in this revised projection should be kept in perspective. The current U.S. death toll stands at 592 as of noon on March 24, 2020, out of about 47,000 cases. So my adjusted figure, however tweaked, remains both far lower, and I believe far more accurate, than the common claim that there could be a million dead in the U.S. from well over 150 million coronavirus cases before the epidemic runs its course.

So here's what's going to happen.  Trump PERSONALLY needs a good economy or he will find himself alongside Micheal Cohen in Federal Prison by 2022. So we are going to loosen restrictions next week, when we still do not have enough testing and create a second spike, and need another couple trillion to clean up his second fucking mess he created.

As I said at his inauguration, "Trump will far and away be the most expensive President in our nation's history."

Between this and Matt Gaetz's tweet going after Sen. Burr, I don't even know what's going on right now.

Maybe putting 2% of the population up as acceptable amounts of people you're willing to let die to have a great economy is the straw that broke the camel's back?

Everyone needs to calm down on opening economy vs remaining shut down.
1. After a couple weeks we should have more data on which to base a decision.
2. It doesn’t have to be a binary choice. Total shut down or shuttling elderly people to casinos.

I guess it depends on what you consider better, staving off deaths or a stronger economy?

I guess everyone who can't afford rent or food won't kill people as well. Sucks you can't go to work to feed your family. Just gotta make sure that you stay in your home indefinitely till it's all gone.

I actually agree with this general take.

We need to get a handle on where things are and where they are going.  And the only way to do that is to 1) shut down as much as possible, right now, and 2) gather as much data as we can (we need a crapton more testing).

And once we get that, then we can work on figuring out a balance -- how much activity/contact can we allow while keeping the infection and hospitalization rate manageable in the medium to long-term, so that we can manage the infection and restore some significant economic function.  That balance is surely something between "everyone stay at home" and "back to normal in all respects."

basically, when trump said he's losing billions by being president, what he really meant was the company is losing trillions by him being president.
