Hays County apparently going against the CDC and telling people to go on about their normal lives, according to Statesman.

So they declared a state of disaster 24 hours ago then today are going to say just ignore that whole disaster thing and go about your normal business?

So our neighbors Canada and Mexico are fairing better.

Factors: I guess lower populations, less social mobility (ie: global travel), warmer temps (myth?). anything else?

That may be true of Mexico, but Canadians travel more than Americans do and also have better social mobility than Americans.  The big difference is that they have a universal healthcare system so it is easier for them to implement nationwide measures.  They also have an adequately competent national government, they mostly trust that government, and they have fewer outlets like Fox News and Rush which actively try to undermine their efforts to have a functioning nation.

They are also more willing to endure some individual sacrifice for the common good.  Americans, on the other hand, are probably the most individually selfish people on Earth.

If there was any doubt before this situation came along to remove all doubt. There's a lot of good people in this country who are doing the right thing to help their society but we definitely have the largest bitchass selfish fuckhead population by capita on the planet.

The republicans might be the largest doomsday cult on the planet.

My wife's 80yr old grandmother was sharing this shit and saying it's veracity just a couple days ago. She's a smart woman, but drinks deep from the fox news fountain and believes state tv over medical experts.

Fuck so many old people are putting themselves at risk for no reason but to own the libs.

"Fox and Facebook" are agents of death for many over 65.

Re that “holding your breath for 10 sec” deal, I came across this (no idea if this is legitimate or not):

From member of the Stanford hospital board. This is their feedback for now on Corona virus: The new Coronavirus may not show sign of infection for many days. How can one know if he/she is infected? By the time they have fever and/or cough and go to the hospital, the lung is usually 50% Fibrosis and it's too late. Taiwan experts provide a simple self-check that we can do every morning. Take a deep breath and hold your breath for more than 10 seconds. If you complete it successfully without coughing, without discomfort, stiffness or tightness, etc., it proves there is no Fibrosis in the lungs, basically indicates no infection. In critical time, please self-check every morning in an environment with clean air. Serious excellent advice by Japanese doctors treating COVID-19 cases: Everyone should ensure your mouth & throat are moist, never dry. Take a few sips of water every 15 minutes at least. Why? Even if the virus gets into your mouth, drinking water or other liquids will wash them down through your throat and into the stomach. Once there, your stomach acid will kill all the virus. If you don't drink enough water more regularly, the virus can enter your windpipe and into the lungs. That's very dangerous. Please send and share this with family and friends. Take care everyone and may the world recover from this Coronavirus soon."

To the extent the above is accurate, it sounds like the pneumonia phase happens several days after the fever breaks and in part involves an immune response run amok where antibodies confuse lung tissue with virus and cause fibrosis.  This doesn’t happen to everyone but is a main contributing reason people are hospitalized and need ventilation.  So it stands to reason a lot of people WILL get and have Covid-19, but not the complicated pneumonia as demonstrated by passing the lung inhalation test.  So don’t be misled and be in a position to potentially spread it.  At least that’s how I read it.  It could be the lung test fails earlier in the onset when fever starts, don’t know.

office manager sent a fw:fw:fw:

i asked her not to spread disinformation and sent back a fact check link, then got yelled at for 10 minutes about how you can't trust the media or fact check and how we're being controlled and look at what the media is doing to people ("yeah, you're demonstrating what it's doing to people right now") or northeastern universities running fact check sites and even if my trusted fw:fw:fw: source is wrong about the virus not being able to survive a warm water gargle or they're wrong about it not causing sputum there's still good information in there about washing your hands or not sneezing on people and i don't think they're going to impose marshall [i see you marco] law but that rumor is floating out there but they're closing restaurants so maybe they will and i didn't forward that to you and how dare you ask me not to forward disinformation you have no right to do that

The owner of Kid Rock's Big Ass Honky Tonk Rock N' Roll Steakhouse in Nashville said he is refusing to follow Mayor John Cooper's plan to shut down all bars in the city's tourist hot-spot Lower Broadway during the coronavirus pandemic. After a video of a packed bar went viral overnight, the Metro Board of Health approved a plan to shut down all bars in Davidson County, including the honky-tonks in downtown Nashville. The Tennessee Department of Health reported 39 cases of coronavirus in the state, with 17 in Davidson County alone.

After Cooper announced his plans, Steve Smith, who owns the bar with Kid Rock's name on it, as well as The Diner and Tootsie's Orchid Lounge, said he will not follow the rule until a statewide mandate is issued. Smith called the decision "unconstitutional."

"Unless there's a statewide mandate that directs all bars and restaurants to be closed, the request made by Mayor Cooper is unconstitutional as he is targeting a select group of businesses," Smith said in a statement. "We are compassionate with those who have contracted the COVID-19 coronavirus and all who are helping manage the crisis as the entire world addresses the outbreak. However, a Tootsie's patron as immediate as last night, mentioned having lived through the polio epidemic and didn't recall such extreme measures being handed down in history."

He drove from Florida to Vail?  He needs to quit being poor.

Taking a flight was too much of a risk, but he’s fine standing in a lift line next to hundreds/thousands of other people who are breathing heavily because they spend one week per year at an altitude that high.

It's interesting that their "best case" scenario is the burn fast and bright scenario. Their "best case" is the option where lots of people die really quickly and the market recovers.

Shows you where their heads are at.

Canada closes its border to non-citizens. (but not US citizens at this time)

Sigh.

Time to talk to the daughter about plans to repatriate.  Doesn't mean anything to her right now -- she'll be coming FROM Canada, not to it.  The open question will remain the US border, and whether they will allow citizens to repatriate.

I think I'm going to have to tell her to pack her stuff and get it ready to put in storage downstairs quickly, as she may need to hop on a flight with about a day's notice.

Fuck.  Fucking fuck.  Shit.

Dude, if she's in Canada, you should tell her to stay there...probably her safest option.

Maybe he was doing what I am tempted to do. Drive and avoid airports. Get to the 70% off room with a balcony and a kick as view. Wipe it down, order pizza and enjoy the outdoors plus the room. Refuse daily service and use one's own towels. Avoid all contact with others and drive back. Probably won't do it but it sure is tempting.
