NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The New Orleans Saints are going to court to keep the public from seeing hundreds of emails that allegedly show team executives doing public relations damage control for the area’s Roman Catholic archdiocese to help it contain the fallout from a burgeoning sexual abuse crisis.

Attorneys for about two dozen men suing the church say in court filings that the 276 documents they obtained through discovery show that the NFL team, whose owner is devoutly Catholic, aided the Archdiocese of New Orleans in its “pattern and practice of concealing its crimes.”

“Obviously, the Saints should not be in the business of assisting the Archdiocese, and the Saints’ public relations team is not in the business of managing the public relations of criminals engaged in pedophilia,” the attorneys wrote in a court filing. “The Saints realize that if the documents at issue are made public, this professional sports organization also will be smearing itself.”

Saints attorneys, in court papers, disputed any suggestion that the team helped the church cover up crimes, calling such claims “outrageous.” They further said that the emails, exchanged in 2018 and 2019, were intended to be private and should not be “fodder for the public.” The archdiocese is also fighting the release of the emails.

that wasn't as bad as the media would have you believe.

Surprised a dome doesn't have 2 or 3 overhead HD cameras, that's whats needed here.

everyone lost their fucking minds looking at the view from the camera halfway up the stands on the other side of the stadium.

The church and the saints have opened a summer camp for kids that are about to be molested?

According to Camp Director Jeselnik, campers will have 4 activity periods per day which is quite standard in the industry IIRC.

You'll have morning devotional, flag football, rape, and then arts & crafts.

I suspect that the hiding of the emails was a clumsy move and now fighting their release in court just compounds that clumsy move.

Now you have the Saints (whom I don't give a shit about) figuring prominently in an article detailing the criminal behavior of a pedophile. Proximity to that story naturally evokes the feeling that the Saints share complicity in the actual crime.

Saints PR department advises Church on pedophile PR.

Saints PR department creates written record.

Saints fight to hide written record.

Saints PR department (thus the Saints) now linked to Church pedophiles.

Saints PR department must now deal with Saints' own association with pedophilia.

Saints PR department is bad at their jobs and should never have been consulted by anyone about anything.

This all seems unnecessary. The Saints coordinating a sponsorship for a charity, hospital, etc is business as usual. It’s when you get too chummy that you step over the line from community interest to strategizing damage control with an offending party. You’re then complicit.

They needed a buffer PR firm to coordinate things with the Saints to be above board and ethical. The Saints would then just have to make a decision that the Catholic Church is suitable to do business with.

It’s like if the Houston Texans sponsorship with Halliburton included damage control for no-bid contracts, mercenary crimes, and lobbying during the Iraq War. The Texans have the duty to vet the legitimacy of the company as a sponsor, but should not handle the PR issues of pending investigations or court cases or wars.

Regardless of how many slanted polls the ESPNs of the world take, what ever the Astros did/ didn't do doesn't remotely approach the level of depravity or evil of pedophilia or slanted poles in New Orleans.

Sorry, Dodgers fans...

good point, although this is a story of guilt by association, the association is with an organization that even today continues to engage in the institutional enabling of the anal rape of children.  I'll take banging trashcans, rampant steroid use, and even domestic violence over the Saints helping the "PR issue" of the Catholic Church.

It continues to this day to be a discussion of how the church can atone for its sins, how it can do good works going forward, etc.  We never actually get to the part about stopping the rape of children.

I know this is unpopular on this board, but as far as I'm concerned the NFL and the Catholic Church can both burn to the fucking ground.  I assure you in the strongest terms possible, that America will be better off when both are gone from this Earth.

Saints helped shape accused clergy list, victim lawyers say

Quote

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The New Orleans Saints maintain their behind-the-scenes public relations work on the area’s Roman Catholic sexual abuse crisis was “minimal,” but attorneys suing the church allege hundreds of confidential Saints emails show the team actively helping to shape a list of credibly accused clergy that appears to be an undercount.

New court papers filed this week by lawyers for about two dozen men making sexual abuse claims against the Archdiocese of New Orleans gave the most detailed description yet of the emails that have rocked the NFL team and remain shielded from the public.

“This goes beyond public relations,” the attorneys wrote, accusing the Saints of issuing misleading statements saying their work for the archdiocese involved only “messaging” and handling media inquiries as part of the 2018 release of the clergy names.

Instead, they wrote, “The Saints appear to have had a hand in determining which names should or should not have been included on the pedophile list.”

“In order to fulfill this role ... the Saints must have known the specific allegations of sexual abuse against a priest ... and made a judgment call about whether those allegations by a particular victim against a named priest were, in its opinion, legitimate enough to warrant being included on the pedophile list.”

That list, the Saints’ involvement in it and how accurate it was have become key questions in a controversy that has swirled around the team since news of the emails broke last week.
