We've gone around and around, circularly, on this before. I'll remind you: just because you have an opinion doesn't mean it is correct. So yes, if you think that this thing being disseminated broadly is poisonous, then stop ingesting it. Because as of now, it has not been proven to be poisonous and in fact a contingent of people the same size that shares your opinion (or possibly larger) of people think it's not poisonous.

I think it's about time for you to start your username generator.  I like Honkey Vape, though.

I do think it's funny that guys like 52-80 always assume we're lying when we clearly explain why something like Rogan pushing antivax shit pisses us off. He does this because he's full of shit 24/7, all of his friends are full of shit 24/7, and all of his heroes are full of shit 24/7, so he assumes everyone must be full of shit 24/7. The idea that we could actually mean what we say is a completely foreign concept to his crowd.

And they cannot stop using the verb "cancel" as a stand-in for what's actually happening because if they have to be clear and concise about what it is they are talking about, it's obvious that what they are whinging about is adult world shit like responsibility, criticism, and consequences for unpopular behavior. Hurt feelings.

Serious question: why do people think making comically outlandish and absurd analogies to make a point on a topic or position that is far from unanimous and in fact hotly contested and sometimes evenly split, a good rhetorical device?

That's like me saying "Look, you think that the water that everyone is drinking is poison and causing morgellons to crawl out of your skin, so stop drinking it, but because not everyone is suffering from a psychiatric condition we can drink the water and enjoy it on occasion."

Exactly. If people try to force you to act like a rational adult you’re “cancelling” them. It’s like if a bunch of four year olds took over the country.

I mean, yeah it's obviously a coordinated and concentrated attack on him using old clips we all knew were there, but ya know what? Good, fuck him.

I'm not entirely comfortable with this kind of mashed up takedown where it's easy to clip someone out of general context BUT both Rogan and Spotify shit in their bed, now they have to clean their mess. It's literally in THE FIRST POST IN THIS THREAD. Everyone knew this was out there, including Spotify so they were on notice and they knew what they were buying when they agreed to pay to be his exclusive provider. Rogan wouldn't be raked over the coals right now if Spotify had simply responded properly to his rampant covid disinformation and anti-vaxx garbage instead of doubling down and letting their subscribers know they weren't going to do anything at all to rein him in.

My issue with Rogan goes beyond covid. He has long been an enabler of some of the worst personalities and some of the most bad faith political actors of our time and his podcast became an essential gateway into the alt right with his constant normalizing of vile charlatans pandering to incel culture. He's sanitized transphobia, misogyny, white nationalism, and genetic determinism by regularly allowing people like Molyneux, Peterson, Doug Murray, Alex Jones, Milo Y, Ben Shapiro, Tim Pool, Gavin McInnes, Chuck Johnson  etc. He has habitually platformed reactionaries, conspiracy theorists, racists, and countless hours of despicable garbage, and those of us who hate him for it have a right to point it out and hammer Spotify for enabling and amplifying crazy ideas far outside the norm of acceptability. Crybaby libertarian/idw chuds/conservatives don't like seeing their #1 guy get slammed for sanitizing their abhorrent beliefs and can't distinguish true government censorship (banning books like Maus from school libraries/curriculum) with capitalism at work (private company facing customer revolt).

Quoting because this post is too good.

Yeah, disagreeing with someone is now "cancelling" or "censorship."  Modern conservatism now revolves around victimization wherever it can be scrounged up.  This was once one of the more annoying things about white leftists, but the new right has taken that shit to eleven.

I mean.....the clip is literally posted earlier in this thread, around a time that you were posting a good bit.  JR has some batshit idea that there's some "new species" of ape discovered in the Congo.....a hypothesis that was examined and refuted YEARS before, and when a fucking PhD primatologist called in to (I suspect, I don't know because he never let her talk) share that exact information, he called her an idiot and shouted her down.  It's right there, in plain sight.  It's an abhorrent way to discuss any topic, and it's the exact opposite of an honest discussion or debate.

Thanks for posting the rest of that clip.  I'm glad that he rebutted with the obvious, to question the racial characterization of the study.  That's a good and intellectually honest response on his part.  Sorry I didn't see it before.

It is statistically undeniable that people who are not vaccinated are many times more likely to die if they contract COVID than people who are vaccinated.  Yes, promulgating and amplifying anti-vax bullshit/misinformation causes people to be less likely to get a vaccine, and thus makes them more likely to die, which has translated into actual, real-world deaths.  People are dead because of anti-vax misinformation.  That enrages me.  It should enrage you too.  And it should REALLY piss you off when someone you ostensibly respect is responsible for it in part.

I'm good with holding people who promulgate, amplify, and stand by antivax misinformation (even when confronted with actual facts contradicting their belief, as JR has done) accountable, and holding them in contempt.  Because their conduct is contemptible, and it has had and continues to have consequences.

The question of whether the COVID vaccines save lives is not "hotly contested."  It is fucking settled.  Just one little snapshot -- there are thousands of others just as stark:

11-MORNING-DEATHS-CHART-mobileMasterAt3x

Just because there are people "on the other side," and those people are petulant and loud, doesn't mean that an issue is "hotly contested."  The issue of whether cookies and ice cream for dinner every day is a good idea is not "hotly contested," even though 98% of three year olds will pitch a loud temper tantrum in support of their pro-dessert-for-dinner stance.  The issue of whether vaccines save lives is not hotly contested, no matter how many gun-toting outraged Oakley-wearers show up at your local capitol building and threaten to kill people for doling out vaccines because they're committing "crimes against humanity."

Sorry. Whether or not there is a new species of ape in the Congo is not "hotly contested."  Whether or not birds are real is not hotly contested.  Whether or not the moon landings were real is not hotly contested.  Whether or not vaccines save lives is not hotly contested.  The inability of you and your ilk to see the difference between real, legitimate evidence-based debate and petulant, unreasonable bullshit is the fucking problem.  And Joe Rogan is your poster child.

But what’s weird to me is that society clearly doesn’t work that way in this world. Nothing exists in a vacuum. If that was really the case, the human species wouldn’t have made it this far. Decrying "cancelling" is just the right's lazy-ass way of complaining about any and all consequences for shitty behavior.

"I get to say whatever I want!  I can even say that Jews are an evil bunch, and should be exterminated!  And if you dare call me out for it, and suggest that my sponsors pull out of my show, you are CANCELLING ME!"  That is the only logical endpoint of their approach.  "Consequences" = "cancellation," and because "cancellation" is the great scourge of our society, so are consequences.

The modern right loathes consequences.  The reason that they loathe consequences is that they do so many shitty things that cause them to face consequences.  You know another way to get rid of the scourge of consequences?  Stop doing shit that causes you to face them.

Yeah, not really. If you go over to the DT thread about the latest no-knock shooting by Minnesota cops, you'll see him essentially arguing that the cops don't have personal responsibility because "they were just following orders." If there's any consistency to his position, it's that perceived political allies & in-groups should not be held to account for their actions.

Your example would be more forceful if Rogan were failing, but he’s wildly popular, surprisingly so. Most likely what you’re seeing with regards to capitalism is the dark side; the bitterness that comes with seeing others succeed.

Ummmmmm......the "dark side" of capitalism is that there's gobs of money to be made selling stupid/harmful shit to idiots.  The fact that there's incredible demand for something does not mean the thing has merit.

As a society, we've decided that we want to consume all kinds of pointless idiocy about the Kardashians.  And they are more than happy to sell it to us, by the boatload.  That doesn't mean they have a meritorious product.  It doesn't mean that we're discerning consumers.  It means that we've decided that we want X, and the people with a supply of X have decided to sell it to us.  That's it.  That's all that means.

I couldn't give two shits whether JR has $100 million, or he gets paid in free beer at third rate comedy clubs.  His wealth and success, on a personal level, don't make a shit to me.  HOW he has obtained that wealth may make a difference.  Kind of like how I admire the guy who made $100 million by coming up with ideas that make our tech work better more than I admire the guy who made $100 million selling meth to a network of dealers in the midwest.  I'm not jealous of the cash.  I differentiate between how they made it and the harm/benefit each caused in doing so.

If Joe just stuck with being a meathead talking about meathead shit, comedy, and whatnot, and 11 million people ate it up and he earned $100 million, good for him.  His product has at least as much market merit as Kim Kardashian's giant ass.  If he earns it by modeling treating people like shit, and disseminating and amplifying dangerous misinformation that actually results in human harm, I have a problem with it.  That's the difference.

"You're just jealous of his success!" is perhaps the most juvenile defensive retort in this whole brouhaha.  Well-done.

Ah yes, that's the dark side to capitalism. It's not the exploitation of resources and environment caused by complete lack of accounting for negative externalities - it's the bitterness the comes with seeing other succeed.

Note to self - send revision request to Marx.

Neil's got a ton of money.  Crosby sold his catalog because he was flat fucking broke.  He was selling guitars...literally selling classic Martin guitars, just to pay the mortgage.

The original complaint came from the letter of the healthcare professionals who pointedly did not ask that JR be removed. They asked for disclaimers about Covid misinformation along with links to accurate sources. They also asked for Spotify to clarify and explain what their policies were for spreading disinfo. https://spotifyopenletter.wordpress.com/2022/01/10/an-open-letter-to-spotify/

Young and gang ratcheted up the pressure when Spotify ignored the issue, or if you're being charitable, didn't respond quickly to the letter.

Neil Young pulled his music because he didn’t want to be associated with a platform that included Joe Rogan in it. It’s absolutely shocking that you’re struggling this badly to understand that he was literally telling them “if you want to have Rogan on your platform, fine, but don’t include me on it as well.”

Funny enough, CRM was about getting equal access to rights, and this is a pressured effort to muzzle someone.  Regardless of pedantry of "cancellation" vs "censorship" vs deplatforming vs ostracization... it's clear they want punition against him and his podcast.

I wasn't alive for the CRM, so I can only comment on the behavior I observe here: little positivity, but lots of low-grade bullying, piling-on, false equivalency, ad hominem attack... all playground behavior.

Do you believe that there can and should be consequences for people who do/say loathsome shit?  Because that's what we're talking about here -- consequences.

If Target started selling nazi armbands and marketing their goods to white supremacists, I would suggest that Target should suffer some consequences for those actions.  Would you disagree?  If you don't, then your problem is NOT with "canceling."   It's with "canceling" because you don't like the reason.

Rogan—who recently apologized for repeatedly using the n-word on his podcast, and has been accused of spreading COVID misinformation on his platform—is shown laughing raucously as the tale is recounted in the clip.

In the clip, which dates back to 2011, Diaz said: "You think I'm f****** kidding? Yeah, you've got to suck my d*** to get up in the [Comedy Store's] Belly Room. I'll make a call for you. That's the f****** gateway into coming to Hollywood, everybody knows that."

"How many girls did you have do that?" former Fear Factor host Rogan asked, prompting Diaz to respond: "Oh, 20 of them."

On hearing the answer, Rogan, who has been hosting his podcast since 2009, clapped his hands together and rolled his head back as he laughed.

Diaz then went on to talk about a "little blonde open mic chick…that used to come up to the Comedy Store…and just take me up to the Belly Room and suck my d***, then go do her set. She was tremendous.

"She finally freaked out. When she got to Hollywood, bro, she was beautiful, and when she left her nails were dirty. A year later she wrote me a letter to the Comedy Store [saying], 'You c***sucker, you broke me."

So that's pretty disgusting.

oh whoops, he disagreed and said most of the violence historically is caused by white militaries.

does this make him an anti-white racist instead?

I see you've typically taken the bait from the JoeBro defenders and swallowed it uncritically to regurgitate here. Interesting that for all these twitter complaints about the editing of the initial clip still (which, btw, still shows Joe saying "wait, but is that true?"),  the one you've hung your hat on as a defense of Joe....wait for it..... is itself edited and clipped!

Joe: "Wait is that true, white ppl are pretty violent!"

Chuck Johnson: "Yes but...."

/end scene

Unsurprisingly, you miss the overall point most of us having been saying about him for years and it is perfectly illustrated by the fact that the following "interesting guest" was  invited in to his studio to talk his racist bullshit for 2 hours, 36 minutes. This is who Chuck Johnson is:

Everything was already known about this guy, he was a fringe reactionary internet troll racist fuck Holocaust denier who Rogan allowed to come on his show and play footsie with over their shared aggrievement over all things racial and SJW.

And you think he's exonerated because of this one exchange. Look at Joe pushing back against this racist troll!!!!

Chuck Johnson is just one example of a parade of these characters on the far right who used the JRE and the YouTube algorithm to introduce themselves to a wider audience.

Your example would be more forceful if Rogan were failing, but he’s wildly popular, surprisingly so. Most likely what you’re seeing with regards to capitalism is the dark side; the bitterness that comes with seeing others succeed.

Dark side of capitalism? Are you some kind of socialized communistic fascist or something?
