Your approach is a perfect example of what's wrong with our present iteration of a "society."

"If you think that this thing being disseminated broadly is poisonous, you should stop ingesting it."

That's such a fucked up, limited and selfish approach.  If poison is flowing through our water pipes, if my only reaction is "well, I guess I won't drink the water anymore" is half-assed.  The reaction of a human being who lives in a society and community should ALSO react in a way that reflects concern that his neighbors are getting poison piped into their houses.  We should be interested in reducing the harm to them, and to society as a whole, not just "every man for himself!"  We should be focusing our attention on the source that's piping the poison into their homes along with ours.

Giving a shit about how things affect the society and people around us is a fucking baseline of being a decent human being, and it's a baseline that as a society, we can't even get to.  That's fucked up.

But...but...but...mah freedumbs?

I see you've typically taken the bait from the JoeBro defenders and swallowed it uncritically to regurgitate here. Interesting that for all these twitter complaints about the editing of the initial clip still (which, btw, still shows Joe saying "wait, but is that true?"),  the one you've hung your hat on as a defense of Joe....wait for it..... is itself edited and clipped!

...

Everything was already known about this guy, he was a fringe reactionary internet troll racist fuck Holocaust denier who Rogan allowed to come on his show and play footsie with over their shared aggrievement over all things racial and SJW.

And you think he's exonerated because of this one exchange. Look at Joe pushing back against this racist troll!!!!

Chuck Johnson is just one example of a parade of these characters on the far right who used the JRE and the YouTube algorithm to introduce themselves to a wider audience.

Let's roll exactly with that: everyone already knew that Chuck Johnson was a fringe reactionary internet troll racist Holocaust denier (except Brisket and I, who both got duped with edited clips).

I'm not interested in listening to Chuck.  You're not interested in listening to Chuck.  The person who wants to listen to Chuck would somehow listen to Chuck.   Maybe on 4chan, 8chan, tigerdroppings or secrant.com.

What's your proposal - what do you want to happen?

Having thought about this for a bit, I've come to the conclusion that Spotify and Rogan are really pussing out.

They should leave them up.  If Rogan wants to record an introduction saying he regrets the episode, fine, but pulling them is cowardly.

Uh, it's pretty fucking simple. Do not give a megaphone to horrible people with offensive views? Let them do it on their own podcast, but if you have the #1 podcast in the country and are immensely wealthy and influential as a result, you have a responsibility to your audience and your publisher to not platform them and if you do, you can't fall back on "Don't listen to me, I'm just a dumb guy shooting the shit!"

Do you believe that there can and should be consequences for people who do/say loathsome shit?  Because that's what we're talking about here -- consequences.

If Target started selling nazi armbands and marketing their goods to white supremacists, I would suggest that Target should suffer some consequences for those actions.  Would you disagree?  If you don't, then your problem is NOT with "canceling."   It's with "canceling" because you don't like the reason.

I’m a little torn because red is my color. But seriously, I view Rogan as wrong on Covid, but not loathsome.

It feels like the answer was danced around a little.

JRE is currently is a self-produced podcast hosted by Spotify.  We already know how you feel about it, but what exactly do you suggest should happen?  Spotify appoint a reviewing board?  Crowdsource a list of approved guests and topics?  No action, but continued public shaming?

And maybe, you know, don’t give a platform to racist fucks. We get that people may say controversial stuff, it makes for interesting podcasts. Just don’t do dick stuff, ok?”

Sell him back his exclusivity rights. Rogan just lost the platform billions in market value. Stop pouring millions of dollars into his shit flinging apparatus

"Hosted" is an odd way to describe it since Spotify paid $100mm to have exclusive rights to his program, his back catalog, and the only way to hear him is through their app. That makes Spotify his publisher, whether they are willing to admit it or not.

that's a righteous thing to tell your child.  it's not exactly a precise thing with which to constrain another adult.  you're a lawyer, what do you say?  where and how do you define COVID misinformation?  was his statement about Vitamin D and obesity and general fitness wrong?  Is Robert Malone a disallowed misinformationist?

Ummmmmm......the "dark side" of capitalism is that there's gobs of money to be made selling stupid/harmful shit to idiots.  The fact that there's incredible demand for something does not mean the thing has merit.

As a society, we've decided that we want to consume all kinds of pointless idiocy about the Kardashians.  And they are more than happy to sell it to us, by the boatload.  That doesn't mean they have a meritorious product.  It doesn't mean that we're discerning consumers.  It means that we've decided that we want X, and the people with a supply of X have decided to sell it to us.  That's it.  That's all that means.

I couldn't give two shits whether JR has $100 million, or he gets paid in free beer at third rate comedy clubs.  His wealth and success, on a personal level, don't make a shit to me.  HOW he has obtained that wealth may make a difference.  Kind of like how I admire the guy who made $100 million by coming up with ideas that make our tech work better more than I admire the guy who made $100 million selling meth to a network of dealers in the midwest.  I'm not jealous of the cash.  I differentiate between how they made it and the harm/benefit each caused in doing so.

If Joe just stuck with being a meathead talking about meathead shit, comedy, and whatnot, and 11 million people ate it up and he earned $100 million, good for him.  His product has at least as much market merit as Kim Kardashian's giant ass.  If he earns it by modeling treating people like shit, and disseminating and amplifying dangerous misinformation that actually results in human harm, I have a problem with it.  That's the difference.

"You're just jealous of his success!" is perhaps the most juvenile defensive retort in this whole brouhaha.  Well-done.

In other words you’re just jealous of his success.

I don't know a thing about Mr. Diaz.   Mr. Rogan seemed to be laughing at that story whether true or not.  Even as a fiction it would be disgusting and not funny to me.  But then again, I'm not a red pill incel. Not saying you are either, but that's the only type I could see amused by that clip.

Respectfully conservative cancellers, rather than burning your Carhartt clothing, please consider donating it to help those less fortunate. That would be the Christian thing to do.

Yeah….you don’t understand American “Christianity.” If the action doesn’t inflict pain and punishment on those deemed apostates or not truly/sufficiently American, it’s not a Christian act.

Did the story demean and hurt someone else? Then half of this country celebrates it. It’s the only thing that matters, and it’s far from a negative.

This thread is just a bunch of people talking past each other and the ones decrying “cancel culture” conspiracy theories seem particularly done in bad faith.

Brisket, for some unjust reasons I respect you. Don’t waste your time on this back and forth. I mean unless you don’t have anything better to do, but I’d rather hit my own hand with a hammer repeatedly than explain why people are upset someone who says racist and anti vax stuff on the reg also has an audience of what? 11 million?

It weakens your credibility as a reliable and trustworthy conversationalist.  Best to shoot straight.

As for the subject, Biden apologized personally. Obama accepted it graciously and made Joe Biden his VP.

We dont agree on everything, but I appreciate your tolerance and civility. And Brisket’s too. I try give no worse than what I take. (the shock troops i ignore)

Biden didnt need to apologize for those remarks to absolve himself.  We know enough about him and his tendency to gaffe, and to give him the benefit of the doubt.  We dont demonize him on the basis of a dug-up soundbite.  We should afford the same patience to others, no?

You explained why Biden is afforded patience in your own post. Yet, you believe Rogan should be afforded the same because? Rogan is being attacked because of his large body of rhetoric pushing anti-vaccine positions, not to mention platforming white nationalists and others. Biden and Rogan are not equals in any sense of the word, and thus are judged with a different lens. It’s the same reason Abbot is afforded more patience than Alex Jones.

I think Joe Rogan is a meathead and idiot, and no one should be surprised that we have clips of him being an asshole.  His schtick was rewarded, because people laughed at the behavior.

I also have no problem believing that Joe Rogan does not believe he is racist and that he would never want to knowingly promote racism .  I think that's true.  And I also know that we have on tape a shit-ton of examples of Joe Rogan saying some objectively really fucking racist things, like how "black people have brains, they are just different brains."  I don't know what more proof people need that structural racism is a thing that exists  Joe Rogan has been a serious fucking racist but isn't even trying to be one, which is kind of the definition of the term, and we're debating whether he "meant it."  It doesn't matter whether he meant it or not, and it doesn't matter whether anyone means it or not-- it's still racist and harmful.
