I made my way over to check it out as I’m still young enough to blend in. There may have been 100 students there last night.

I agree with that thought, as if you think about it all championship titles can be disputed pre playoff system...

Yes agreed, as the CFP is currently no different than a playoff "invitational"...  No different than when the NCAA tournament started with only 8 teams...
Eventually the CFP should (and likely will) have just as many playoff teams as the divisions II & III as well, at least then the claim of champion isn't an Alabama&UCF by 2 schools...

After the conclusion of the 2010 tournament, there was speculation about increasing the tournament size to as many as 128 teams. On April 1, 2010, the NCAA announced that it was looking at expanding to 96 teams for 2011. On April 22, the NCAA announced a new television contract with CBS/Turner that expanded the field to 68 teams.

From 2011 to 2015, the round of 64 was deemed to be the second round; beginning in 2016, the round of 64 was again deemed to be the first round.
