I thought it was a fantastic episode and one meant to make a segment of the audience extremely uncomfortable. The ghost from the first episode made a repeat appearance.

It was a pretty interesting episode. I cracked up when the wife said she was Peruvian and he replied "you were white yesterday."

It was a very interesting episode but it's already the 2nd episode of the new season without the main cast.  I want them.  This episode and the one with the foster kids would make a really interesting anthology type of series.

But I need more Earn and Al!

the most ironic thing about this show, for me, is that all of the black people i know who watch the can no longer stand it, and are really disappointed in the direction it's gone after they all enjoyed S1. Meanwhile, i know a whole bunch of white people who just cum in their pants when talking about how brilliant this show is.

if that's what DG intended, and this is all one big meta joke, or him holding up a mirror to society or something, then that's hilariously brilliant. still, other than that this show is kinda "meh", and it eschews entertainment for virtue signaling and social commentary. even if i agree with the points he's making, it's kind of hard for me to really be into a show that features different characters every week, and has no actual plot or continuous storylines.

That's my issue.

If you want an anthology show that is just holding a mirror to society on race and privilege issues, I'm all for it.  But that's not what we got in the first 2 seasons of Atlanta - those things were in the show, but around the main cast and within the story.

I'm still watching, I'm just not fully invested right now.  Because there's nothing to be invested in for this season.

note how she changed the color of her hand emoji too.  Whole thing was a riff on the myth of whiteness White Earnest talked about in S1.

@henrygandorf- how do the actors' salaries work on this show? for example, the actor who plays Paper Boi- does he get a salary for the season, or is his pay commensurate with his air time/time filming?

the regular cast members (4 total?) would typically have their deals worked out per season ahead of time, and that's the money they make.  it's up to glover or hiro or whomever to decide how often or seldom to use them, but their pay is their pay.  (that's for acting - i don't know if any of them also write or produce or whatever).

then recurring characters or guest stars would get paid based on usage - but that would be built into their contract to be on the show.  they would likely know ahead of time how many days to block out, and would get paid accordingly to whatever their reps worked out.  if they were told 2 days and it ended up being 4 days, they would probably get paid more, but covid fucked a lot of shit up so who knows.  different networks pay differently and different levels of experienced actors get paid differently, obviously.

now fx and atlanta in particular don't really follow traditional tv rules so who the hell knows.  it's possible that when glover was rounding everybody back up, stanfield or someone was like, "hey, i can only commit to being in 5 episodes this season, so figure out the rest without me" and that type of stuff might be considered when making his deal.

overall budgets might not have been able to afford everyone for ~10 episodes so they may have known going in that 2-3 would be standalone.  money always comes into play and people get written off shows for budgetary reasons all the time.  money and scheduling affect everything that you're seeing.

but closer to the original question - in the old days, the stars of the show, the names that appear at the beginning of let's say, "family ties" - justine bateman gets paid for every episode even if she doesn't have a scene.  she's part of the main, starring cast.

This is a weird analogy, but Donald Glover's approach to this show reminds me a little of Sturgill Simpson's approach to making records. It feels like they're both intentionally fighting against what their audiences hope and expect that they will do. Maybe to make them think? Maybe just to surprise them and keep them on their toes? Maybe to intentionally fuck with them? Who knows.

Sturgill made Metamodern Sounds of Country music, which was a psychedelic neo-outlaw country music record that many people likened to peak Waylon Jennings. He followed it up with A Sailor's Guide to Earth, which was a deeply personal, hyper-produced pop record with full-on horns and shit. And then he made Sound the the Fury, which was a weird-ass synth rock record (which I fucking love, btw).  And then he did a traditional bluegrass record. Dude could make a full-on punk record, or a 1950's R&B record next and neither would surprise me.

Donald Glover seems to be of a similar mindset. Keep them on their toes and always keep them guessing. I appreciate an auteur that takes us for a ride. I'd like to see more from the main characters, but these little vignettes he's doing this year have been thought-provoking, even when a little on the nose and over the top. Let's keep rolling DG!

This week's episode was a lot better for me.  The satire worked a lot better.

"-Is racism over?

-Fuck no, obviously.

-I think what he means to say is that with our initiatives, racism will be over by 2024."

Brian Tyree Henry was fantastic in the meeting scene.  Lulz at him calling the one guy a black-adjacent influencer.  And the final commercial was fantastic.

Also, the storyline with the white woman and Darius going to the Nigerian restaurant and her appropriating it into generic fast casual bullshit was a fantastic combination of funny and uncomfortable.  Card only was a nice touch too.

episodes 1, 4, 7 have been standalone non-cast episodes.  i would rank them: 4-1-7.  thought this one was pretty weak and didn't have the messaging i enjoyed in the other two.  from the super vague episode descriptions on imdb, expect 10 to be another one.

I haven't seen any discussion on my twitter timeline about Atlanta like I had the past season. I understand why. Also, Donald basically warned about this when he basically said Season 4 would be better. I get the messaging, but I'd think the point of the FX medium would be to make these issues just a biiit more exciting than reading about them in a think-piece?

I watched the latest two episodes last night. The nanny episode was a pretty good ghost story. The ending was a little creepy but touching at the same time. Personally I was immediately put off by the couples inability to understand that the nanny was someone that should have been respected as a familial loss. At a certain point I was wondering if the show was exaggerating because surely people are not this cold in real life.

The New Jazz episode pretty good too. I assume most of the episode was just Al tripping out by himself.

wtf even is this show.

What if black except white*?

One episode without the main cast would have been plenty.

Whether the main characters are getting high on that couch outside of Alfred’s apartment in Atlanta or strolling through the streets of London, Atlanta is still concerned with the interpersonal and psychological effects of fame. While Atlanta’s second season leaned into psychological horror, forcing Alfred and Earn to reckon with ennui and the threat of squandered potential, Season 3 probes the darker side of success for Black people—particularly Black artists. “To me, sometimes success is horrific for Black people,” says Henry, who plays Alfred to aggravated perfection. “There’s really no going back.”

I guess this was the last episode of the season?

1. Zazie Beets is one of the finest things walking this earth. Period. Full stop.

2. Just another...... Wtf.... Episode. Kinda funny. But also just wtf for the sake of being wtf. Like why do I have to see 20 seconds of an artsy background covering up a pissing scene? Because it made Donald Glover giggle when he thought of it? Fuck off.

i mean, obviously.  it completely tied up all the active plotlines from the season, rewarded the loyal fans, and added a pretty significant cliffhanger to get you excited for next season.  personally, i think it's the best season of yellowstone yet.

1. Yes. She is so hot. Love her.

2. Very WTF but I laughed pretty hard a couple of times. The whole hands thing was hilarious. The gurgling pee part was funny.

Yeah. When he looked please to have the Deftones shirt I thought "That's a white dude shirt." Then the final reveal about the owner. Not sure if it was a foreshadow or not.

It's the dude in the boat in first episode and the guy that shot himself in ep 4.  His name is also Earn/E.

Yeah, I know it was White Earn, which is why I commented on the Deftones shirt. It stood out as a white dude stereotype then it turned out to belong to White Earn.

The picture reveal was foreboding so I wasn't sure if that is indicating that our Earn might have a similar fate.

I can't tell if Earn is in the same hotel as White Earn was when he killed himself in episode 4. If so, it would make sense that White Earn's bag came to the same hotel where Earn was saying since White Earn said his bag was lost.

Loved the Van episode simply for the Paris porn. The friends seemed to mirror Earn (worried about Van), Darius (just going along with things), and Al (looking for a good time). The piss scene at the end was bad but it was funny that she just stared out at the Eiffel Tower while she was doing it. Wife said the weird hands dinner is similar to how people eat ortolans, which was featured in Billions and Succession.

I lightly skimmed this thread to avoid any spoilers as I'm about to watch S3. I will note, the latest seasons of my previously favorite Fx shows have been difficult if not impossible to watch. Better Things was absolute vomit. Snowfall seems painfully slow and redundant but I've only seen a couple episodes so far. I was hoping for good things from Atlanta but after skimming this thread my expectations are diminished.

I felt like episode 1 required a lot more thinking than I was ready to do. The surreal parts got weird quick, especially the parking garage thing...... but I let episode 2 start without a break and I thought that one was great. They were both solid, but 2 had a lot more to say directly, and a lot more acting time and character development for Glover.

Oh, and shoutout to Tracy.
