When did old Austin die?

Those are some dark football years indeed.  You didn't even get the Fall of 90 which was brilliant (January 1, 1991, was significantly less so).

Correct. Worst 4 year stretch in history I think. At the time anyway.

But I think I did go to all the home games in Fall 90. Including UH.

Loudest and most fun home game I've ever been to at Texas.  That was my freshman year, though I was born and raised in Austin, by two UT grads, so I'd been going to games since I was 2 or 3 years old.

August 1984 to May 1991.  I at least got the Shock the Nation tour.  I also got the Cotton Bowl and the rest of it.  The good news was that blOwU also wandered the wilderness at this time.  The bad news was that A&M did not, via cheating.  Very few people have lived through an "era" where aggy was consistently victorious over Texas.  I don't recommend it.

We were 3-1 against blowU my 4 years.  And 1-3 versus the ags.  That sucked for sure.

Where was it before that? By the time I was legal drinking age it was there. I remember pretty well late 70’s to mid 80’s as a kid but other than Veranda, Cloak Room and maybe Caucus Club I wasn’t real aware of the bar scene in Austin. I turned 21 in 1991. I do remember Matt’s when it was on 1st, and the Raw Deal.

edit- I may or may not have had a drink in 1989-90 at chicks o chicks, paradise, jaime’s, and Abel’s. And the place across from 606 what the heck was that called?

When my sister moved here in 1982 the Cedar Door was where the Doubletree Hotel is now on 15th by the Chili Parlor. When they built the hotel (this was before I came to UT in 1985, but not a lot before) the bar moved over not far from where it is now, north of the Iron Works in the general vicinity of where Moonshine is. The Convention Center may literally be sitting on where it was prior to moving to Lamar/Cesar Chavez...

The Rodeo was held at Sheriff's Posse Arena.

It was sponsored by the Spurs or Cowboys or both.

It wasn't much of a rodeo, but an opportunity for drunken duffers to ride a small bull.  I'm sure liability concerns put an end to it.

SIgma Chi put on fight night.  They didn't let in people from other than a student org in my day.  But, there were always one or two, usually in the lighter classes. that had some actual boxing experience.  They just danced around popping their opponent who was helpless.  The Delts had one dude, hispanic surname, fighting in the heavier class (guy ran 6' about 185) and he was murderous.

My senior year, two dudes in ME, one ATO and one Wrangler, got matched up with each other in a big-boy class.  They beat the living shit out of each other.  And they were friends.

Only at UT for undergrad for '96 and '97 seasons.  Missouri monsoon was a memory, my first collegiate game.  OSU and A&M that season were fun as hell.  Notre Dame atmosphere was great, but result stunk.  Sat through every single play of the UCLA game in 1997, except for piss breaks.  I still remember badgering my housemates to get up and go to the Kansas game in 1997.  We sucked, Kansas sucked.  But it was my last game in undergrad so we had to go.  What a miserable season.  Seemed like every game was either a loss, too hot, too cold, too rainy, or some combo thereof.  I wish I had gone to UT longer and met Smitty and RexKramer.

Back on topic, I think the poster that pointed to the economic development and jobs nailed it.

For most of my seven years on campus, there weren't enough jobs to go around for graduates, so remaining in Austin either required a stroke of luck or underemployment, even for engineers and lawyers (two fields well represented in Austin even in the old days).

At some point in the 90s, being gainfully employed in Austin after graduation became less of a moonshot.  I think that's when things started to change.

Agreed. And pretty sure I hurled in the sink in the bathroom at Wylie’s after that game. So there’s that.

I wonder if the Delt was a guy named Paul Morales. He was about that size and played football with my brother. He supposedly was a very good boxer. I almost boxed after doing another match and started training up until I found out I was going to go up against a 3 time golden glove champion. Not a good person to go up against for your first real match.

I'm going to have to look up where the Sheriff's Posse Arena is located. They had some pretty good bands play at the event (guys like Jerry Jeff Walker). I had fun, but I think there may have been more liability for all the drunks driving to and from the arena than the frat guys riding the bulls.

4b) DOWNTOWN CHANGES: The Rail Yards Apartments built near 3rd & Red River ~1991.
- - - This introduced living in downtown, formerly a no-man's land, to a large number of young people. The apartments filled immediately and their proximity to 6th Street and the other downtown bars was seen as a huge convenience in a traditional driving town.

The Rail Yard was there was before 1991, I lived there in the summer of 1986. There was a national Chevy/Ford truck ad about that time that featured a couple of dudes moving a couch into their 3rd floor condo balcony via rope that was shot while I lived there...

98-02 for undergrad...3-1 against the agros with bonfire game being the only loss.  ricky broke the record, simms lit them up, and then that weird game that sucked until benson finally broke through.  2-2 against blow u.  we whooped their ass with ricky, comeback game with major, got absolutely raped y heupel and q. griffin in one of the worst days of all our lives, and lost on the evil roy williams game (which the outcome sucked but it was one of the most intense games i have ever been to - pads were fucking popping that day).

10-12 for grad school.  fuck everything about that shit besides beating corn and the agros in their home stadiums as parting gifts.

Yep.  I don't recall that they ever replaced the "Skating Palace" sign on the the AWHQ concert hall!  They certainly never replaced that nasty carpet in there!

1985 Roundup in front of the Woo says hello

I'm in that pic somewhere, either on the sidewalk, or possibly just out of field to the left.

I don't think there was a keg involved, but a lot of bottles and cans and just clap your hands.

Went for a haircut once at Woo. Seemed weird to me to be honest.

Actually drove down MLK last week for the first time in forever. Damn, unrecognizable. Both the amount of building on the UT and city side are wild.

UT-area bar Cain & Abel's closing at end of month; owner says bar will relocate soon

The bulldozers are coming for iconic University of Texas watering hole Cain & Abel’s sooner than owner Ellis Winstanley expected. But Winstanley already has the next chapter plotted out for his bar.

The bar at 2313 Rio Grande St., that Winstanley has owned since 2002, will close at the end of month. Winstanley says he already has a new location locked. While he won’t share the location yet, Winstanley says he expects the new Cain & Abel’s to be open before the original closes at the end of April.

“It is moving, 100%,” Winstanley told the American-Statesman.

Winstanley has known since last summer, when the land on which his bar sits was sold, that he would eventually have to shutter. He just didn’t think it would come so soon, telling the American-Statesman last year that he estimated he had a couple of years left.

“I made my own assumptions based on the speed at which site plans move, which is usually a year to two years,” Winstanley said. “I guess when the tax man is going to get a whole bunch of extra taxes, they get a 300-foot tower built pretty quick.”

Permits filed with the City of Austin indicate that demolition on the site that will be cleared for a 30-story student housing building will begin at the end of the month.

Winstanley claims that Travis County taxing authorities and city officials desirous of more property tax income have been forcing the issue of redevelopment, which he says has led to the demise of his restaurants and others such as Hill’s Cafe.

The two lots on which Cain & Abel’s and its required parking lot sit occupy about 1/3 of an acre and were appraised around $2 million last year, according to county records, with estimated taxes of about $40,000. By comparison, the nearby 18-story apartment building Inspire on 22nd sits on .3 acres and is appraised at $71 million, which led to an estimated $1.4 million in tax dollars.

Cain & Abel’s opened in January 1991, taking the place of a bar called Abel Moses that existed on the site from 1980 to 1989. Winstanley said he believes the property was home to two separate bars, Bevo’s and the West Side Tap Room in the 1970s.

furk me.  The woo is a goner, Abel’s soon too…on campus ‘88-92, great years to be at Texas as i recall Austin had not changed yet to the cosmopolitan city we see now. Round-Up, nascent days of SXSW, add-drops in the drum.  Renee Zelwegger was a buddy, great times. we would go to dry creek on near Mt Bonnell…I wonder if the  “bring your bottles back” old lady is still running that joint?

Maybe urban myth, but i heard stories in the 80s of porn films being projected from a balcony of the Woo onto the West facade of the Harry Ransom Center.
