North Shore is 4505.  It is NOT part of HISD.  They also have another 5A school in Galena Park ISD.  That does make it a bit different from Allen in that respect.

TWHS is 4330

Alief Elsik has 4277 and isn't a factor.

Hell Pasadena Dobie has 4209 and never does jack-shit.

There’s lots of high enrollment high schools in both the DFW and Houston areas. However, typically the same schools are the ones winning and competing for titles every year.

Sure coaching is big part of it, but it’s also pretty obvious that the better players in those areas end up at those schools one way or another.

The Odessa Permian and Midland Lee type schools can’t compete with those schools anymore. Just too big of a talent gap and depth issue, which wasn’t the case years ago. Along with the much larger emphasis that has gone into football in the big metro areas, especially DFW.

Harlingen heads to to the locker room up by 7.

Sloppy game with 3 turnovers for Stevens and 2 for Harlingen and a lot of penalties against Stevens.  Questionable call by Gomez to try a 35 yard field goal instead of going for it on 4th and 3 from the SA 17.

Harlingen can easily win this game, Stevens is not completely outclassing them and is playing sloppy.

It's really the only explanation for HP's success.  It draws from about 5 sq. miles and a fairly fixed student population (that has increased a tad because the property tax situation is that childless people gtfo now).

Also a microcosm of the difference coaching makes.

And Highland Park always seems to miss the 6A cutoff be 10 or 20 students.   I’m not a conspiracy theorist.....but in this case I am.

Gomez seems to have a few brain farts in the playoffs.  Saw this a few years ago when they lost to Madison

As I originally said it comes down to coaching and @Helobious other point. The amount of feeder junior highs. The fewer you have the easier it is to manage what you need. The great schools are all running the same offenses and defenses from varsity down to 7th grade. Even into the peewee leagues for the area.

Having an affluent neighborhood also allows for better things such as indoor training/practice, better weight rooms better strength and conditioning etc.  It also allows your athletes to go to camps to improve.

This is pretty much correct.  I can’t emphasize how much it helps to get the youth involved and ingrained in the culture and expectations.

Agree, Stevens came out strong but the cards took the punch and responded. They definitely aren’t outmatched just need to eliminate the mistakes. Our kicker has a strong leg but has been shaky all year, I wouldn’t rely on him much moving forward if I was Gomez.

Which team do you think can give Westlake a better game next week?

Playing the way they are today, both would be destroyed by a lot. In my biased opinion I think Harlingen would give them a better challenge, I think they’re slightly more sound on defense than Stevens.

I like Harlingen fans. They travel well and they are very passionate. Chaps played you a few years ago in the Alamodome and you had a huge group of fans make the trip. We beat you down, but your fans never stopped making a ton of noise.

FYI, there is a good chance next week's game will be another home game for Westlake due to lack of stadiums.

WTF, Harlingen just gave Stevens all they wanted with the difference being a high snap on a punt.  No one’s saying they’re running the gauntlet but the team should be stronger next year and HHS is one of the few RGV squads that has experience beating teams from upstate both in and out of the playoffs.

I think one of the things about the smaller, but fairly ultra-affluent communities is that there isn't a lot of turnover in students.  Once a family moves into Eanes, or HP, or Southlake (probably to a lesser extent), they are there to stay and the kids that make up the varsity football team have played together for years, picking up elements of the system.

Other schools have more turnover from apartments and lower-income sections, but make up for it by a larger student population (and "recruiting").

The affluent schools “recruit” too, they just usually don’t get any slack for it. (Although I think Southlake did get slapped on the wrist a few years ago).

Sounds like Duncanville. The best players that live in Dallas ISD (south of 30)tend to go there due to their open enrollment policy.

Desoto and I think recently Cedar Hill also became open enrollment, so that whole area is going to stay spicy.

Some of that talent migration is natural though. Talk to any kids in Southwest Dallas County and there’s a more than decent chance their parents or grandparents are from South Dallas. The talent that used be in DISD back in the day, moved to Cedar Hill, Duncanville, Desoto and Lancaster and started families.

felt weird today not having 3 State Championship games.

For all of my sentiment for the "old ways," this week has become something akin to the opening weekend of March Madness.

A day and a 1/3 are missing...  At least we get them later, but it still feels weird, given the past 3 days.

Yep Argyle, Southlake and Aledo all start the kids early in the system. I live in Trophy Club and our kids grow up playing Southlake and Argyle in youth sports and its crazy how they are always leaps and bounds better even at a young age. One big thing many parents do in Southlake is hold back the boys a grade.

the thing these all have in common, along with several other perennial powers, is the one horse town setup. head coaches love that so they can control everything from 6th grade pre- athletics to the varsity. add in the very flexible 'open- enrollment" (recruitment) policies at some and that helps even more. Despite all its growth Katy ISD has hardly touched Katy HS attendance zone over the years. North Shore might as well be a one horse town

Yep, I'm a fan of creating a 7A for playoffs even if only for 8 teams. They have manufactured an unfair advantage and should get to play only comparable situation schools come playoffs.

Why create a whole new classification for a bakers dozen of schools?

Permian, Celina, and SLCare the first schools I remember implementing their varsity offenses and defenses all the way down to the peewee leagues.

For discussion's sake... and I am not disagreeing with you-

1. how do you break this out and keep the 6ADI and 6ADII brackets full?

2. what are the ramifications of wins/losses within a given District and when they have a "SuperSize" playoff qualifier?

Thinking just take the top 8 enrollments teams that make playoffs into a "Super", then fill out 6A as is now... so additional 8 teams would make playoffs.

Your region has a "Super" team in it than likely 5 teams will make playoffs otherwise only 4....

There just has to be an dis-incentive to create these super school just for football.

In every classification, the largest cutoff number is around double the smallest. 2A is 105-229, a little more than double. 3A is 230-514, a little more than double, 4A is 515 to 1229, a little more than double, and 5A is 1230-2219, a little less than double.

6A starts at 2220, so if the largest schools are around double that, 4440, I think that’s reasonable.

There are actually only 4 schools in 6A whose enrollment is considerably higher than that and 3 of those schools are the Plano schools and they suck anyway.

This isn’t an entire division problem, its not even an 8 school problem, it’s an Allen high school problem. They have considerably more kids than even the Plano schools. They’re at 7k, they are a sole outlier.

Nah, just go back to what I posted earlier. Give 6a an upper attendance cap, hell, let it have a cushion of +200 kids or so just in case your enrollment jumps. If you’re bigger than that, you can get put in a district and play a season but you’re not eligible for the playoffs.

We have upper and lower attendance limits for every other classification and there’s no right to be eligible to play for a state championship in them.

Allen will split up tomorrow.

The split divisions thing they now do  in 5a and below at least evens things out somewhat.  The Problem with 6A depending on region and district, the largest school could very well be one of the smaller schools in the D1 bracket. Whereas one the districts in the DFW,SA, or Houston areas , one  the smaller schools in a district  could go to the D2 bracket with a sizeable enrollment advantage which is a flaw in the current setup.   In fact this was occurring in 5a until they decided to  do the split division thing as part of the district realignments.   You had schools with 2200 enrollment playing schools with barely at the 5A cutoff ( around 1080 I think).  It does make scheduling non districts a headache though where some districts have to find 5 and even 6 non district games.   It’s at least something 6A may have to look at and even if it’s a smaller pool of teams who end up in 6A D1.  It might require tweaking cutoffs down the line too to get a few more in D1 which really shouldn’t be an issue with the explosive growth in some regions which is going to continue.

That's a pretty common practice nowadays.

Not unique to Southlake.

A few years ago, they did a study about all the Men's World Cup teams and discovered that a great majority of the players were the oldest in their grades. So the rewards that they experienced from being more developed encouraged them to continue to play and helped fuel a lifetime of success.

Just watched the Harlingen/Stevens game highlights. Both teams looked pretty weak at the QB position, and the RB's are underpowered. The Stephen's receivers are small but they made some very good catches. Honestly, it looked a little like a JV game. I will be surprised if Stephens can score next Saturday against our Chaps. The following week will probably pair Westlake against Steele. Now they will hit you and they're always a tough game.

Yeah, the pre season split may need to come to 6A eventually. But that still won’t solve the Allen problem as they are so much bigger than even the other big schools.

You’re right that currently the D1 pool would have to shrink. There are 245 schools in 6A right now, I’d guess only 70 to 80 have enrollments over 3k. That number will grow over time though, that’s when the pre-split will be inevitable.

5A (when it was the big schools) pioneered the division split and for many years 5A-D1 had a smaller pool.  Three teams from each district went to the playoffs, the bottom two went to DII. DI played one less game in the playoffs. It wasn’t perfect but it worked.

Still think there should be an attendance cap or just force high schools that get too huge to field two varsity teams of equal size with the rosters split by last four digits of SSN.

Our RBs are both sophomores, QB was a first-year starting senior with limited arm & limited mobility but always played his ass off. I know Stevens QB was a sophomore. They made the plays in crunch time and deserved the W, but I still think we would give Westlake a better game. As in we might’ve lost 56-7 while Stevens might lose 63-7. Steele I see as like a 42-14 type Westlake win.

I really can’t imagine that Westlake breezing through the season like this will help them against NS. I remember 2 years ago the LT fans talking mad shit on the 6A site before the NS game. NS stomped the fuck out of them. I do think this Westlake team can give them a better game but it’ll be tough.
