Yesterday...

Originally released on Friday the 13th of February, 1970 in the UK.  That summer in the States.

One of the greatest and most influential records of all time.

It's tied with Vol. 4 for my personal Sabbath favorite album.  Your thoughts on this masterpiece?

I previously argued on this board (or its predecessor) that Sabbath may be the most influential rock band of all time, because basically every genre of heavy metal can trace a direct lineage to that band.  Our resident Beatlemaniacs reacted with measured, justifiable disagreement.

JK.  They fucking lost their shit.

There is no doubt that the Beatles are one of if not the most influential rock band ever.  Ozzy himself was inspired by the Beatles to become a professional musician.  But Sabbath invented a genre.

The influence challenge is unwinnable.  Someone influenced Chuck Berry, Elvis, The Beatles (Brian Wilson says "hi"), The Velvet Underground, Sabbath, Kraftwerk, etc., etc.

But as a starting point to a genre Black Sabbath is a book of Genesis.  And imo, really fucking good.

The cathedral of rock and roll is Ray Charles, Elvis and the Beatles. Charles was the foundation, he made the melody, time signature and gospel hymns an acceptable and commercial success. Elvis the walls, he brought it to white America. And the Beatles the roof, as their creativity quickly developed the sound from simple songs to more complex melodies and time signatures. Including orchestration, unusual instruments and far more serious lyrics. It took each of them to make the sound mainstream. And everybody today is simply doing their version of what those three had already done. It may be more polished, more intense and make more money, but it ain’t original.
