Recommend to me a a good south Austin Ortho Doc for Knee

A couple of years ago I was dealing with a finger injury from climbing and in lieu of climbing at my rock gym I availed myself of their fitness classes which were kind of a what I would describe as a "light cross fit" - lots of box jumps, burbees, air squats lunges, pull ups etc. but no hard core Olympic style lifting.

This seemed to be going just fine and I was never called out on form or anything until...I elected to go and play some ultimate Frisbee.  I played just fine with no issues until the next day when the back medial side of my knee swelled up and was tight and painful.  I had played ultimate quite a bit before my fitness classes and never had an issue, so I am thinking I got into some bad form or mechanics somewhere along the  way with the classes.  The injury righted itself after a couple of weeks and I stopped the fitness classes.  A few months later I tried to to do ultimate again with the same result.

I went to the doctor, they took X rays and did a few range of motion tests and said everything looked just fine and did not order an MRI for the knee.  So I have done various rehab and prehab type of exercises over the last few months and avoided the ones that seemed to cause any discomfort.  But there always seems to be some discomfort when in an extreme squat position like Kosak squats , pistol squats, or shin box raises (Note: i don't do any of these exercises-I'm just describing the position where pain begins).

So enough background info.  Right now it looks like some kind of light MCL sprain and most likely some meniscus damage.  I am tired of dealing with this-I need to get an MRI and deal with it from a position of knowledge.  Any recommendations for somebody in south Austin (north austin  would be ok, just not round rock etc.).

Frosty Moore

Was a pitcher on the Longhorns National Championship baseball team in '75.

Has done my both of my Mom's knees, one shoulder & maybe will theow her a new hip in 4 or 5 years.

Handled my broken clavicle & cracked rib from a horse throw.

Is head of Sports Medicine for Rodeo Austin going on 20+ years now (hell, maybe longer).

Legendary in this town.

Over the past 30 years Frosty has performed approximately 6,500 total joints (hips, knees, ankles, shoulders) & prob 9,500 arthroscopies,

3 Of kids are following him in the business (prob. have 5 or 6 years in practice each by now), however I would try to get ONLY Frosty to open you up for the actual surgery. Nothing against the boys, but if you could have Leonardo Davinci paint your portrait when he was 30 vs. when he was 60, go for 60.

Moores are good and in Drip. Frosty is recovering from a recent heart attack. Gonna differ with the above as to who the better Moore is at this point.

Dr. Dean Chen, Dr. Scott Welch are both in Westlake

Dr. Villarreal at DOC at Slaughter Ln

If you want to discuss further, send me a PM.

Dr. Hyde is another good one.  She did my scope in 2012 and I've been good since.  I'm not spring chicken either.  I had a similar issue to you.  Turned out to be torn cartilage on the medial side of my knee.  She clipped it and I was solid after a month or so of rehab.

How old is the OP?  Ultimate is a pretty intense sport.  You're gonna have to hang it up eventually.

OP is 53.  Ultimate is not my sport, I just played it from time to time and can easily give it up.  I only mentioned it because it was the activity that immediately preceded my first bout with stiffness/pain, although I do not think it is the cause of the injury.  I think ultimate just aggravated it.

I aggravated this injury last week doing some bouldering(rock climbing).  I rock climb all off the time, but these boulder problems had some running/jumping  starts which were done on a crash pad as a launch, which given its unstable nature was probably a lot like doing some of the moves found in ultimate which, again aggravated things.

As of today, my knee is on the mend after a weekend of rest and Aleve and will probably be back to its pre-aggravation state in a couple of days.  I just need to get the underlying problem addressed if I can...so I can do some straight line running and recover my range of motion so I can train for rock climbing and some weight loss maintenance.

Richard Schram at Austin Orthopedic Specialists (I visited his location by Seton Southwest) is a pretty well-known name.  His bedside manner is fairly abrupt, but he's a good dude.  Did two meniscus clean-ups for me successfully.

I ended up going to Dean Chen and had an MRI, which indicated that I need some meniscus clean up.  So partial removal of medial meniscus and some hole drilling in some sort of muscular like node that is somehow agitated by the existing meniscus tear.

Since my diagnosis I have reading up on the extremely common procedure/cottage industry and have read a couple of disturbing reports on whether this actually helps anything more than doing doing just a prolonged extended rehab of the knee joint to mitigate the effects of the tear.

Tell me more about your experience and some costs, as I will be paying for this myself since I have really shitty insurance.

hi

I was having some knee pain and instability about 10 years ago.  at the time, I was increasing my mountainbiking a lot.  the instability was mild, and I'd been dealing with it for a long time.  for example, if in a frog stance, if I rocked one way or the other, it felt like it was just gonna give out.  pretty sure that was from dislocating it at work back in the early 90s.  it popped right back into place, so I just went on and said nothing.  but it popped out a few more times much easier, after that.  creepy but whatever.

anyway, it was the pain keeping me up at night that sent me to see an ortho.  highly recommended doc, at the time.  I think he's out of that biz, though.  last I heard, he's into some alternative treatment methods that I've heard are hitormiss.

so I had the meniscal surgery.  did PT with their in-house team.  pain wasn't going away.  I asked the PT and she said, "oh, your IT band is probably tight and pulling your kneecap out of place.  here's a foam roller."  and walla, the pain went away.

so, did it help?  yes.  it definitely solved the stability issue.  it was NOT the cure for the pain.

remember:  the MRI order is a loaded question.  'look for possible meniscal tear'.  well, whadiya know...

also, once you start down that path, be careful you don't get addicted to regular 'clean-outs'.  a buddy of mine did that.   bone on bone. gym rat, too, so lots of power lifts and whatnot.  had his knees replaced before 50.

I know a great PT guy.  supposedly, you no longer need a scrip to see a PT.  he's awesome, but he's a one-man show.  no billing dept.  pay for service, and he'll give you the codes to for you to file for reimbursement with your ins company.

as far as surgeons go, I can rec Joshua Fox.  he rebuilt my other leg after I shattered my tibial plateau.  16 screws and a plate.  cool guy, very honest, I thought.

good luck.

ps.  lay off the pistols.  split squats worked great for me without the extreme pressure on the joint surface that the pistols seemed to produce.  jmho.
