Coronavirus Impact on Travel

Just Canceled our SWA vacation package to Las Vegas for next week. Booked it April 30th when it looked like things were going to lighten up.

Getting a full refund from the Cosmopolitan Hotel/Casino,  and SWA flight credits valid through Sept. 2022.

Too bad, as we had a really good rate for the wraparound suite.

In February, I book a domestic flight for the 2nd week of April.  Cancelled it March 27 once it looked like it wasn't gonna happen.  Just called and rebooked the same trip for mid-August with no issue and $120 cheaper.

If that helps.  Good luck!

I wish it were that simple. I tweaked dates/route enough when booking (well, before booking I ran a ton of matrix searches) and had biz for about 1/2 price ($1800 vs ~$3600+/-) over any other days. Move departure or return one day and it went back up. Flopped a few points down and it knocked off $550 a ticket after that making it $1250.

So I’m guessing it will be better to take the credit and do the dance all over again.

I would like to go back to Italy at some point.  And Germany.  And England.  And France.

I agree completely and in 2021 or 22 or 23 we should be able to...

I should have clarified. None of my plans this year. I have another baby on the way and international travel is simply not happening for me right now.

The article said that the EU would reevaluate every two weeks. I haven't totally given up on our trip to Italy in September, but the U.S. will have to stop being stupid, so I don't really have a lot of hope. Italy is safer than being here right now.

We had a video call with our friends in Oslo on Sunday.  They are going to a summer house in northern Denmark in a week or so.  We sighed, noted that we still can't travel, because we're utterly fucking this up, and all four of them said together "we know."

Nevermind the human toll, and the crushing effect on travel....it's also embarrassing.

Yep.  I think you will be disappointed.

Doing the dance, indeed!  Yeah, just a bit more complicated than my transaction.

Best of luck gettin’ ‘er done, though...!

I was pretty stoked to find tickets for that, not gonna lie. Credit and finding something again is probably going to be the best avenue.

Just booked United to London in mid-September with miles.  I have always found it difficult to use miles for international business class travel on relatively short notice.  Award travel has historically not been available or around 300k miles for a round trip flight.  Picked this one up for 60k miles and the business cabin looks empty right now except for 2 other seats.

So apparently Massachusetts is encouraging 14 day self quarantine.  Since we can't spend 2 weeks locked up the plan is to donate blood next week and get antibody tests, and then hopefully schedule an active test within 72 hours of our departure (with the hope that we can get results before leaving).

This is a mess.

You think the UK is letting you in by September? That sounds wildly optimistic to me.

I am certain they will.  I have a UK passport in addition to a US passport.

And they are letting US citizens in now, but you have to quarantine for 14 days.  But it is different than a quarantine here.  You have to provide your address upon arrival at LHR and are likely to get a visit or two from the police to ensure you are following the quarantine guidelines.

I thought it was based on the country you are traveling from, not which passport you have.

You are right, the 14-day quarantine is based on where you are coming from, but that's not a big deal to me.  My point is that I don't think I will run into a situation where a country like the UK prohibits its citizens from returning under any circumstance.  I guess it's possible if they shut down all flights from the U.S. but I don't think is likely and could find other means to get over.

Took a direct flight from BWI-DEN and back again this weekend. Little to note outside of the encouraging cleanliness of the aircraft and the perpetual idiocy of the American People.

As soon as the cattle were through security, whether in the terminal or at baggage claim, they felt free to take their masks off and assume all was normal... That said, if you pay attention and steer clear of the regards, it’s totally worth it to travel if you feel comfortable.

All the same, I guess this is the new normal:

Just flew back to Dallas from KC on SWA earlier today & no issues.  Everyone wore mask & all middle seats empty.....except for a Karen that decided to sit in one so no one would be on either side of her.

Flew back late Sunday from LA as now Chicago is restricting travel from certain places.  I'll say this - I saw a shitload more wearing of masks in the airports etc.  Can't really speak much on LA as we pretty much drank and hung out at the house and the only damn time we left was to the airport.

Also finally got refunded for our rental house in Spain...we knew it wasn't happening but they were slow as shit to give out refunds.  This shit is getting quite old.

Flew SW Denver to Houston and back Wednesday/Monday.

Everyone in the airport pretty much in masks.  Didn't see anyone on the plane without them.  94 passengers DEN to Houston and 89 Houston to DEN.   No status on SW, but was A group both times (checked in late for both flights too).

The boarding in groups of 10 went really fast.  SW might want to cut down on letting 30 at a time on when things ever go back to "normal."

Fuck you Hobby and your "modified" TSA Pre Check.  Shoes on, but electronics out.

I flew from Cozumel to Dallas on AA last Sunday. All middle seats empty except for couples that were cuddling up. Everyone had masks on the whole flight except the idiot in the row next to me who had the mask loops around his ears but the mask sitting on top of his head. I took my mask off for a minute to take a drink and the FA reminded me to put it back on. Then she looks at the guy with the mask on top of his head and says nothing.

How did you manage that? I was under the impression that non-essential travel to Mexico was off limits until at least 7/21.

How was it?

Had a great time. We were all over Mexico for 31 days. The "non-essential travel ban" with Mexico is a joke. You can drive across the border or fly into Mexico with zero issues, and thousands of Americans have been doing it since the initial travel ban in March. Mexicans are very happy to issue you a tourist FMM and take your money.

I discussed it in the Isla Mujeres thread, but Mexicans are taking this shit way more seriously than we are. Mandatory masks everywhere, curfews, temperature checks, enforced social distancing etc. We went through 10 different states. A lot of crazy shit. Took some surfing lessons in Puerto Escondido, did a lot of diving. And drinking.

This was our route.

Impressive. Did you rent a car to drive down, leave it and fly back?

No, I drove my Jeep down there and left it in front of my rental in Cozumel so I have a car to drive whenever I go down there. Tired of paying for rental cars.

We picked up a girl in San Luis Potosi and had to buy a trailer because the Jeep was way too overloaded. Pulling a trailer with a Jeep through the Oaxaca Sierras was a fucking experience in itself. My idiot buddy kept driving like a tard and eventually broke one of the wheels. That was also fun.

Looks like CR is ready to go.

Where did you see that? I mean yeah, if you’ve got a Canadian or European passport, a negative test within 48hours of arrival, and can get on what they estimate to be 5 flights a week starting Aug1.

They also just had their highest daily case total yesterday. CR as we know it isn’t happening till next year.

That was a day ago and it was speculation. The press conference announcing the official guidelines was today https://ticotimes.net/2020/07/23/costa-rica-reopening-for-tourists-from-eu-uk-and-canada
