The New Car Fanatic Thread

My favorite thread on the old site.

I've been in Germany for 2 weeks now and there are some dope hatches and wagons out here.

Love this A-class hatch

And this C-class Estate

And the Audi S3 hatch

And the Peugeot 308 GTI

Interestingly enough, I've only seen one Porsche and it was a Panamera.  Not a 911 in sight.

Is there a CLA hatch? Could be hot.

Edit: also saw a buddy’s new RS7 Performance the other day. Instaboner. Did not get a pic.

Yes, the A Class is the hatchback CLA. We don’t get it here though. Only the lifted crossover version, the GLA.

I like the A45.

Most underrated manufacturer right now.  Their interior design and build I think is top in the game.  308 Also has good dynamics, but the interior ergonomics is not quite there and their infotainment is kinda ehh.

Citroen does great work too.

I only get the nod from other fellow owners, but this guy drove by the otherway and gave a thumb.  Hes in my favorite design maybe of the modern era.  Same color

Random quesiton, of all the manufacturers who has the highest number of different models? It has to be Mercedes right? Seems like they have a car or three for every category.

Global, or US?

Talking about light commercial vehicles too?

Ford is probably 1.  Mercedes a close 2.

Any of y'all run AWD (full time 4wd?)

xDrive people alerted me to the increased sensitivity of tire size selection, because there are some cases of premature transfer case damage due to different rolling circumference.  Pretty silly since any properly engineered diff and xfercase should be able to handle that.

Then the whole thing about warranty comes into play and some are reluctant to buy anything not manufacturer spec - which in BMW case are tires with "star" marking.

I went and checked. From straight off their respective websites. I typed all the Porsche ones but got lazy for the MB ones so I just counted. Toyota doesn’t really have submodels in the same way. This doesn’t count Mercedes Truck Division.

Also note this is US ONLY.

I drove a G35X for 7 years which had a pretty nice AWD system. It had a square tire/wheel setup and anything outside of a small percentage difference in size between tires would make the system think that wheel was slipping. I could run sizes other than stock  as long as all four were the same. Some guys pulled the AWD fuse so they could run a staggered setup, but I never saw the need. The Infiniti system defaulted to RWD and was really only fully engaged at low speeds or if it sensed slipping.

It was awesome in the snow and rain.

Just got a text from the guy who is doing the engine swap on my '47.  He fired up the motor for the first time today and is finishing up a couple wiring things.  He said he'd try to send me a quick video.   I'm fucking pumped.  Might finally be able to drive this thing in a month or so.

Doesn't seem accurate at all.  You're putting in different trim levels of the MB and Porsche, but not Toyota.  As an example, there are 6 different 4 Runners to choose from.

In the case of Mercedes at least, they use several different engines and drivetrains, and many of them are different in many ways. Toyota models are usually  more of a different option package and they may have one different engine option. For example, every Yaris has the same drivetrain. Same with the Corolla, 86, Sienna, Tacoma, 4 Runner, Seqoia, Prius, and Avalon. I would see the Prius trim levels as all the same, where’s as the C300 and the C63 AMG are very different. I admit I was lazy with Toyota though, so here:

Yaris - 5 models

Yaris iA - 1 model

Corolla - 6 models

Corolla iM - 1 model

Camry - 10 models (including Hybrid)

Avalon - 8 models (including Hybrid)

86 - 3 models

Sienna - 7 models

Tundra - 5 models

Tacoma - 6 models

C-HR - 2 models

RAV4 - 10 models (including Hybrid)

Highlander - 8 models (including Hybrid)

4Runner - 6 models

Sequoia - 4 models

Land Cruiser - 1 model

Prius Prime - 3 models

Prius - 7 models

Prius c - 4 models

Prius v - 4 models

Mirai - 1 model

i guess Toyota would win this at 102.

If you broke it down into strictly model families only, it would be:

Mercedes - 24 (including hybrids, but counting the coupe and convertible models separately)

Toyota - 21 (including hybrids, but counting the Prius, Prius c, Prius v, and Prime as separate models)

Porsche - 8 (Boxster, Cayman, Carrera, Carrera Cabriolet, Carrera Targa, Panamera, Panamera Sport Turismo, Macan, Cayenne)

Yep. Trackhawk is AWD.
