I'll just throw in here that I'm kicking around the idea of Porsche Boxster.  Last year of ICE production.  I like ICE power.  Any opinions on the long term value of that vehicle?  Will it hold any value?  The MSRP is in the $90-$100K range for 2025 models, which is really expensive compared to the same model 5-6 years ago.  It's a 10 year old platform and drive train design, but could be a really fun car to have in the garage for all those super nice Houston spring and fall days.

I imagine that it should hold value reasonably well, but I don't have my finger on the exact pulse of the Boxster market.

But unless you expect to tire of it (or that you might want to "upgrade" to future power plants) then take a moment to consider whether you should even give a shit about retaining value for a car that in many ways isn't about practicality and boring shit like that anyway.

A Boxster would be a great weekend toy. Get a manual 4.0 GTS if you can swing it. Trim and options matter for value retention, but a Boxster will not hold value as well as GT cars or 911s. Porsche has walked back some of its electrification commitment. If they build another ICE Boxster, the 718 will no longer be "the last one."

I understand that Porsche has sort of reconfirmed its commitment to ICE power but nowhere have I seen any mention of a future Boxster/Cayman/718 ICE version. All electric as far as I can tell.

Nor have I, just pointing out the possibility.

I strongly recommend the GTS for resale because it has the flat 6. I don’t think the 4 cylinders will command a “last of its kind” premium.

If you’re looking for an open air Porsche and resale is important, maybe consider a 997 turbo cab, a 991 targa, or a Spyder. They’re used and are holding value well.

I have a 991.2 GTS and love it. You can’t go wrong with the Porsche driving experience.

Saw an Audi ETron GT at a lot. I actually dont like the looks of its, but this one had brakes that caught my eye. Gigantic saucers of a thing, but especially in a mirror-perfect finish.

So apparently, a few companies offer them aftermarket, but Porsche also do them as 'Surface Coated Brakes' using tungsten carbide. Can't be too compromised if Porsche puts them on the Cayenne. And the ETron has regenerative braking so friction brakes arent leaned on too much.

Catchy stuff.

That's pretty much the consensus: noone is remotely close to what you described as FSD for native in-car implementation.

Comma is supposed to be good but I dont have first hand experience.

Waymo is fully autonomous, but they operate in a very limited area, and require a gigantic suite of sensors.

Mercedes is probably the most falsely-advertised system. They claim to be the only Level 4 system but are ridiculously constrained: basically <40mph on certain preapproved sections of highway only (lol) and in perfect weather condition and traffic density.

Ford's Bluecruise is also supposed to be decent comparator to GM's Supercruise

My 2021 E450 basically drives itself on the highway from stop-and-go up to full highway speeds. The stop-and-go works especially well as you don’t even have to touch the wheel.

That said I just don’t love it, especially vs my 2012 Audi A6. It was annoying to drive with all the nanny stuff, and the Burmeister couldn’t touch the Audi’s B&O. So it’s going away Monday and being replaced by this:

In other news here is my neighbor’s (not that neighbor) 50th birthday present to himself:

That other neighbor got his wife a free one year lease on a brown etron Q8 with no options. Total Ed deal.

Loud, firm ride, drinks gas, I love it. Might do an easy trail with a local Raptor group on Sunday. I’ve gone down a YouTube rabbit hole on overland radios.

Decided against bead lock capable wheels like in the previous pic because they cost another $1500 and are heavier. If I get that serious I’ll upgrade. It’s a helluva lot of truck for $56K, and I love that there are almost no available options, they load it up. All I paid extra for was a spray in bed liner and keypad.

20 gallon tank, so mileage varies with driving habits. High teens to twenty on the highway, a lot less when ripping around.

It will be another 50 hp and another 100 lbft of torque after I do the Ford factory tune.

The wife needs a new ride with the following “essentials”:

- 6 passenger
- Built in sunshades
- 4 Bucket seats
- AC ports in roof
- Hybrid (PHEV preferred)
- Decent storage in rear, even with seats up

That combination appears to be extremely limiting, with only the Grand Highlander fitting the bill. The XC90 is out due to price… so, if we’re trying to stay under $55k and are open to new/used, can anyone think of an alternative?

wife is pulling the trigger on a new Santa Fe Caligraphy hybrid. It was that or the Highlander hybrid but she liked the Santa Fe better.

*missed the storage requirement. Storage looks pretty tight with the back row up. Probably not a good fit.

Effin hell this just about matches my wife’s wish list besides the hybrid, tough enough without that.

I like the styling on those. Can’t wait to hear how she likes it.

Sequoias are hybrids. Unless she’s specifically looking for PHEVs.  In any event, can’t think of any three row SUV with legitimate storage and hybrid.

Grand Highlander has it, but yeah…

Worth a look, thanks, but assume the storage and lack of roof AC will disqualify.

The calligraphy line has ventilated captain’s chairs which is nice. Sounds like the Sienna Hybrid will hit everything on her checklist. If she doesn’t want a minivan there is the Kia Carnival (minivan-SUV Frankenstein) and all of the bigger Toyota SUV’s are standard with hybrid this year.

Yes, it has the largest cargo capacity of any current hybrid suv (maybe slightly less than Sequoia but negligible) but is still damn small relative to larger SUVs that aren’t offered in Hybrid. Likely your best option at your budget.

Been looking at the 25 Nissan Armada for the wife, but $75k to $80k for a Nissan is hard to swallow.  They are nice though.  Plus, she doesn't need a big ass gas guzzling SUV.  Looking at someone smaller.  Like the Grand Highlander Hybrid, but those things are hard to come by and I'm not playing BS dealership games.

May go look at a Buick Enclave (Avenir Trim).  They look nice.  Also may look at a Mazda CX-90.

We've had the Enclave for almost 10 years.  It's been a great car.  And it is really nice inside.

Damn, I can't remember what I had for breakfast.

Is it a no-go on a mini van? A Sienna will kick the shit out of the Highlander in the comfort/storage department.

He already said he's looking at a Grand Highlander

Ok, apparently we now have a second option… but of course the area of contention is resale value.

I can’t convince her that we skirt such complications with a low interest lease and she can just get a new car after she trashes this one in a couple years.

Drops the “I don’t want a payment…” line but is fine spending 55k in cash

80k for a Nissan?! If you want to light some money on fire then buy a boat. At least those are fun.

I traded in my 718 S but thoroughly enjoyed it. That said, the turbo four cannot match the flat six.

I almost bought one of those, years ago, and I liked the pop pop sound. It was a good car.

Went trail running with 22 other Raptors today in the North Georgia mountains. It was an absolute blast and a great way to knock the new off the baby Raptor. So much fun to play with the different drive modes, and the KO3’s really grab. I need some chase lights pronto because when the dust kicks up you can’t see shit.

Same McLaren neighbor above has a quad motor Rivian and it’s awesome. But the price tag was more than I wanted to spend and I’m worried about long term ownership of any EV. I hope to have this truck for a long time (even with all the tech).
