He was pretty outnumbered and unarmed, similar to when the guys on horseback surrounded them. Perhaps he’s a better fighter, but it was 5v1 and they had guns and were threatening to hurt Dina. Joel would rather sacrifice himself than risk harm to a young woman, considering his daughter situation.

Still disappointing to see him go out like that, but perhaps that’s the nature of the apocalypse. Not every hero gets a glorious death from a bloater or psycho raider. Sometimes you survive the zombie outbreak and later get killed by a vindictive 25 year old with questionable fighting and survival skills. A lot of apocalypse survival probably comes down to good or bad luck.

Also important to remember that the scene began with him taking a shotgun blast to his kneecaps. Once he realized who they were, there was no avenue to talk his way out of it, and dude probably couldn't even stand up, much less fight.

"Oh shut the fuck up and do it already" because he doesn't give a shit about hearing her sob story is pretty in character. I went on YouTube to see the game version, and it's, "Why don't you say whatever speech you've got rehearsed and get this over with." Not delaying the inevitable with pointless talking sounds like Joel to me.

I enjoyed that episode. There wasn’t much action, but the plot is moving forward and many of the scenes were beautifully shot. I think it was a good follow up to the last episode which was action packed

Dina is a great addition so far and more than just a token pretty face. She can’t replace Joel, probably no one can, but her personality complements Ellie well. She has a strong voice, she’s intelligent, and she has a more positive vibe to offset Ellie’s moodiness and cynicism. In only 3 episodes, they’ve given me a new character to be invested in and care about.

I predict that Tommy and Jesse will set out after them once they learn they are gone. There will come a point where the girls are backed into a corner and the guys will show up to help.

They must have a massive stockpile of shampoo and conditioner in Seattle.

Apparently, it's very important that they max out the attractiveness of the actresses playing teenage girls for...reasons.

Just because she’s asleep doesn’t mean they can’t still blow her face off. It was 5 (?) on 1 with multiple guns to his zero. He’s also 60. Joel knows how to assess a situation. Sometimes you’re cooked.

He was also tormented by guilt. The show wasn't exactly subtle about it. A part of him felt he deserved what was coming and maybe wanted it. Or at least was resigned to it. That's how I read it anyway. It never crossed my mind that the show was disservicing the Joel character by not having him go full Bourne mode.

Jackson Hole to Seattle is 850 miles. Are we to believe outside of one rainstorm, two small women on a horse would have an uneventful trip? Then they ride into Seattle after seeing a fresh murder site. Oh, “look a piece of shit, lets be seen in broad daylight for miles on the same path as the war atrocities!”

0 for 3 episode-wise

>Good
Deena the Explorer
Catherine O’Hara

>Bad
Casual Seattle daytrip
Unexplained cult without context, bringing hammers to a gunfight
The H&M Wolves storming the REI closing scene

>Ugly
Pacing issues
Ellie’s dialogue and likeability, not her looks

I was thinking about this during the show. Jackson Hole to Seattle is roughly the same distance as Austin to Tallahassee, FL.

People would have been up in arms with how slow the pacing was, if they spent an entire episode on Ellie and Dina riding a horse and camping.

Like I implied, it was an uneventful trip, probably took several weeks. They would have looked like warmed over shit wearing the clothes on their back. Probably wouldve passed by population centers. If they bypassed those like they said, it would have been over a month. Its unlikely.

Late stage GOT had them traveling distances instantly. Early GOT had them get waylayed and it showed the struggle of traveling in unfamiliar territory. That was a symptom of lazy storytelling.

My recollection of S1 showed them driving a vehicle and having some struggles in populated areas. They even made fun of Ellie’s converse sneakers. So it’s a minor quibble.

I'm only 2 episodes into season 2. I loved season 1. I didn't play the games but know what happens in the story.

Question: in the game, is Ellie as completely unlikable as she's become in season 2? I loved her in season 1. In that game, is she just an unlikable bitch? Is her season 2 character staying true to the game or is this just a really bad adaptation?

Have not watched ep 3 but the general online sentiment is that this episode minus Joel and full dose of Ellie/Belle Ramsey is causing people to Nope to the rest of the season. If she's even more of an unlikable bitch in this episode, I may be right there with them.

It seemed like the trip went quickly but I just assumed there was a lot of mundane travel time that wasn’t worthy of being on screen. They said something about staying off the main roads to avoid conflict so I think we can infer that their plan worked.

The first season had a 20 year time jump followed by a 3 month time jump. The first season skipped past a lot of Joel and Ellie’s trek across middle America.

This season had a 5 year time jump followed by a 3 month time jump. I think it’s okay to skip through Ellie and Dina’s trek across the northwest. There’s apparently a lot of empty space out there with no raiders or zombies.

Yeah, I had a few of the same thoughts on the quick trip to Seattle, but I get it, it's not important and there really aren't a lot of hazards between Jackson and Seattle. Same with the 2 minute scene of Ellie boxing, we don't need a Rocky montage. The first episode showed how little Ellie/Dina cares about the zombies, they consider hunting them a sport because they are bored in Jackson Hole. I would imagine they understand that they are playing a different game now, and not taking unnecessary risks or wasting ammo, time and resources. The Northwest is cold, sparsely populated (if at all), and these two presumably know how to avoid the infected and are smart enough to not walk into human traps, so I guess nothing happened for 800 miles. *shrug* That's believable, it's not like this show is based on Red Dead Redemption 2.

It appears that the WLF have taken over Seattle and defeated or maybe replaced the Fedra there, taken their armaments, vehicles, and fortifications.  They will be a considerable force to be reckoned with, especially if Abby and friends are inside the fort or a part of those patrols. I'm not sure Ellie and Dina are going to have a good time if they are going to have to stealthily avoid the WLF army.  Those rando Joker-faced people in the forest seemed like a rather capable tribe of wilderness folk that were likely hunted down by the WLF and murdered. They seem to be a lot better at hiding in the woods than Ellie and Dina with a horse will be. That may be intentional on the writers part to illustrate the WLF's tracking capability, it's hard to think of any way this doesn't end up with one of them captured.

We have 4 more episodes to finish this season, so roughly 4 hours of screentime to finish this revenge story line. That sounds about right for them to learn the patrol patterns, scope out the base, set some trap or ambush, fail miserably, regroup, plan a new trap that works, things happen, zombie attacks, then capture Abby and kill her with a golf club before riding off into the sunset. Seems reasonable.
