"So, the fungus is real and it can turn bugs into zombies. That’s pretty rad. But does it pose a threat to us?  A comforting fact is that people have been eating Cordyceps for centuries now without turning rabid. It’s a traditional Chinese medicine, used to treat kidney disease and other ailments. Even wellness brands are now marketing it."

IIRC, part of the story is that global warming has allowed the cordyceps fungus to mutate to a form that can stay alive inside a human body. We can eat it now because our body heat kills it before it can replicate and take over.

Presumably people eat dead mushrooms anyways.

Yea the stages are:

1. Runners

2. Stalkers

3. Clickers

4. Bloaters

Just head they get hard to kill, not sure on what the method is.  I think stage 4 can throw/spit spores at you.

Fuck Stalkers.

The runners and stalkers go down a fuck ton easier than clickers.  At least the boaters are slow but they jizz acid all-over like a 15 year old MIA and his porn collection.

Best way to kill clickers is a head shot to the fungus or a piercing weapon through the skull.

Shit I have to replay this damn game again.

Fuck Stalkers.

By far the worst are

Spoiler

those fucking ones that have fused to the wall and then pop out and give you a fucking heart attack

But yes. Stalkers are indeed terrible

So what is the difference between runners and stalkers? In the last episode, they were running, so are those the runners? Have they shown a stalker yet?

This fan wiki covers all the types of infected. Not that many. You can click on each type for a summary but majority haven't been in the show yet. And some of the descriptions may contain some minor spoilers

well that was certainly different than the game

Fucking great episode though. Holy shit. Did not expect that.

Also: Glad to see Armond from S1 of White Lotus have a more dignified death in this series.

Well I’m a sobbing mess

I thought I couldn’t cry anymore and then they end the episode with their song and Joel actually smiled and Ellie saw it and now I’m dead.

Bill and Frank 4ever.

Offerman fucking nailed that part. Do they give Emmy awards for a supporting role in one episode of a limited series?

yes.

jesus what a gripping episode of television.

That episode was amazing, it could have worked as a standalone film. Was looking forward to Bill and Ellie's back and forth banter but this is a change that I didn't mind.

Also, RIP to actress Annie Wershing (videogame Tess).

Imagine if you went into Whataburger and they were all like “Oh hey, we don’t have any burgers today but we did make beef bourguignon and there’s a wine pairing, would that be okay?”

That felt like a post-apocalyptic version of the first 15 minutes of Up. HBO is nailing this series.

Great episode last night!

Near the end of the episode my wife turned to me and very confusedly asked "Was all this in the video game?"

I asked someone that too.  And was like, damn I need to play this game!

so i don't know what to say.

that was an amazing episode. i'm still reeling.

for those of you asking if that was in the game, i'll answer in spoiler tags, but i'm not spoiling anything, i don't think.

it's like they took a very minor plot point that's fairly subtly touched on in the game, and expanded it beyond your wildest imagination to tell a whole story

and they did it in a way that i don't think i'll ever see done again.

that was incredible. just fucking incredible.

I have no idea if they'll cover it, but there's another really small story that's purely background in the game I think they could do something similar for:

Spoiler

The story of Ish finding other survivors and starting a small community in the sewers outside of Pittsburgh that ends tragically could be incredible television in Mazin's hands.

Last shot of the episode (and frequent visual trope of post apocalyptic content): how exactly did zombies cause a skyscraper fall sideways into another? And why are buildings supposedly crumbling 20 years later? People harvesting the raw materials?

Those were designed by aggies

I’m pretty sure if you go back and watch the trailer, that’s definitely going to be part of the story.

"Ok everyone, casting time. We need a prickly but lovable, bearded, isolationist prepper for this episode."

Offerman: "Yeah, over here. I'm already in costume and everything. Just what I wore over here."

You should have said "yes. Now you understand why I play video games."   Then maybe she'd let you play more video games.

Fuck me that was a solid gut punch.  While that story wasn't fleshed out in the game, the emotional impact is similar to what I felt when completing the game.  Awesome work.  I think the last TV show I saw that had a similarly awesome episode was Better Call Saul when Mike had to shoot the German engineer.  After that, I can't remember anything right now that is on this level.
