I’m going to wait until the drawings come out on Thursday, but I’m not liking the sound of a “closed off upper deck” as that takes away from creating an arena atmosphere.

But I’ll wait until I see the photos first before I get upset

No practice facility seems a little weird. On the bright side, you don’t have to give players after hours access to the main arena which means you’ll never have to suspend your point guard for getting caught having sex on the Jayhawk.

I mean Longhorn.

It’s going to be uncomfortable when the artist drawings include a guy standing on the sideline who looks a lot like Fred Hoiberg.

It is so critically important that we differentiate ourselves from some of the other large public schools in Texas in terms of how we treat our (in this case potential) access to state funding. State and local taxpayers should not be paying for these kinds of things even if we could three-card-monte the shit out of it. I'm proud our University's chosen not to do that.

Well said.  I do acknowledge the fact that understanding how the permanent university fund, the AUF, formula funding, the University Lands, state  legislative appropriations, and the independent arm that funds athletics all work and how they all effect or don’t effect tuition costs and fundraising/development efforts is a challenge and time consuming.

That said,so many people who are Longhorn fans or even UT degree holders don’t miss a chance to bitch incessantly about costs and revenue and they have less than no idea about how it all works.

The “how can we build a southern endZone or hoops arena with tuition so unaffordable and all this oil money coming in?” Crowd is already surfacing for the next Lege session and the mass voter blocs are already shouting it.  It’s impossible  people that were taught critical thinking at our institutions of higher education are so voluntarily and proudly ignorant of such basic facts.  Some of these fucking idiots are just a few years away from insisting the PUF divest itself of fossil fuels.  (Spoiler alert—-a huge chunk of the land has been turned over to solar and wind).

end rant.  Really curious how this hidden second level is gonna look and SOUNd?

Do you have a link elaborating on this?

Utlands.utsystem.edu

i saw Mark give a presentation on it about two weeks ago.  I don’t have the slides with me, but I’m betting there’s extensive info on their site somewhere.  He was given a lot more authority to make deals to drive renewabke energy uses out there in addition to more drilling activity.  He’s doing some amazing stuff in the whole space.  But again, he is there to maximize the value of the lands for the PUF and turn income over to UTIMCO for growth.    But I’d add that mark is also making us a leader in the land steward space and providing real time opportunities in energy for students and grad students.  Hell they even have a winery out there on the lands and the juice isn’t all that bad.

Not that it makes a shit but I assume Red River as a through street is a goner. I don’t see how it could fit without taking it away.

There was an earlier plan to rework Red River so that it goes straight north from where it is today when passing the Erwin Center, passes by the swim center (where the parking lot is today in front of the swim center), and connects to Robert Dedman Drive as it goes past DKR, which might become "Red River" and continue through campus.

I"m not sure if that is still the plan, but there were a few images around that showed that alignment.

Baylor announced their campaign for a new field house style gym yesterday. Dropping capacity from 10,347 to 7,000ish.

I haven't seen any rapes occurring in the renderings, but usually those things are happening in the shadows.

I fucking hate baylor but that is a perfect college basketball court.

Arizona state closes off the top of their arena. I guess it kind of works, but it’s still a lot of space just covered by banners. Purpose built smaller stadium would be better, but if the idea is that it will be filled at some point, they won’t turn down 7000 seats

I cannot see that happening .

That was the plan when they sent this out to potential developers. It's to give direct access to the arena from 35 and to provide the space necessary for a double deck arena.

You thought getting in/out of the Erwin Center in your car was fun...wait until you try it with half the egress bitches!

What is that salmon colored "Academic Building" to the SW corner of the proposed arena?  I can't picture that area in my head.  Nor with my crayola caddy.

I guess I'm just having a hard time envisioning rerouting a fairly heavily traveled four lane thoroughfare on the edge of campus to a route that goes directly through campus. It seems like there would be unfortunate traffic issues.

Maybe not.

Btw, I'm pretty sure the plan is to put the practice facility in the south end of the LBJ parking lot. That was the plan for this location in the original 2016 master plan.

that shitty rendering reminds me of that photoshop of the old aggy tacklebox with the upper decks just superimposed on one another till it filled up the frame.

no way it ends up looking like that and only holds 10K

Those graphics look half-assed at best and the interior shot is a photo shop of the Erwin Center.  If they go with that same shitty low slope bowl shape for this arena, it will be the same shitty venue moved over a couple of blocks for $300M.

I sure hope that isn't the case.

I’m no architect or designer but this style doesn’t look like it matches anything on campus. It’s like that horrid white igloo looking thing over by the PCL. Maybe it’s me.

So, wait, we're not taking out a large payday loan like aggy would?

Not sure what Bellmont’s balance sheet looks like right now, but not too long ago there was $365 million of debt on the books to pay for stadium improvements.  Bellmont won’t be borrowing for this arena, but the other (non-UT) partners are certainly going to be issuing a few hundred million dollars worth of bonds to get this thing built. Then everyone just crosses their fingers that the other-than-UT-basketball revenue can pay off the bonds over the next 35 years. If not, the bond holders are going to end up owning the arena.

Looks wayyy more intimate than the erwin center

An alcoholic, estranged, philandering, dead-beat father is more intimate than the Erwin center.

And please tell me they aren't actually putting a giant Longhorn on the roof 🤦‍♂️

The photoshop is bad and also implies student seating behind the baskets. They've got to use the new arena as an opportunity to make a true student section.

Don’t remember from where but I saw CDC is making this an emphasis. He’s so dreamy.
