Got two kids who are about 3 months from being done with junior high and starting high school.  They can occupy themselves, but I'm starting to wonder if we ought to get them back into some level of the three Rs next week (this was Spring Break).  Having a hard time navigating the homeschool options - most seem more geared to the younger crowd or the highly religious.  Particularly trying to find stuff for their classes that "build" to the next level, like Algebra I and foreign languages.

Anyone got a direction for me to look?

Thanks

Did none of the things I listed upthread work?  They should all be secular, but since mine are a little younger I haven’t been exposed to those levels yet.

for instance, search for Saxon algebra I Home school on amazon.

I have two kids under 5 and we’ve been doing a lot of arts and crafts the past few days. Now I understand why Mrs. Lippy was such a weirdo.

Same boat. The 5 year old is about ready to explode, at this point. 2 year old is moody, but she's handling it better.

I prefer the Johannine expression.  Paul gets a little too radical ascetic in some instances for my taste.

would’ve never guessed that an Orthodox adherent would prefer Johannine theology over the rankings of a lunatics who gave purpose to those heathens in the West and in Renaissance Europe.

I've been teaching my middle schooler house to dunk on a 7.5ft goal.

Jump shot drills from the elbow.

Running volleyball drills from her club team.

Painting projects on canvas board. (Bob Ross videos)

Short chapter summaries on her favorite types of books.

Most states (including Texas) have canceled their state assessments for students. However, the College Board is going through with AP tests in May. The tests will be taken online (students can do them at home), they're only going to be 45 minutes each, and will only cover content that most schools have covered up until March. There will be more details released on April 3rd, but that's the gist of it.

For those of you with high school seniors, how are your kids handling this?  My senior seems to be doing okay, but I know that all of this is bothering him.  I don't see a graduation ceremony or senior prom for him.  He's going into the Navy in July, so this is really shitty for him.  Anyway, he seems to be keeping things in perspective, but I know that it has to suck.

Wait, no over there

Shit, no, back to the original spot

Repeat as necessary...

When we were kids, our dad would take us out to the ranch during the summer and have us dig post holes so he could move a fence 5 feet. The next summer, we'd move it back the 5 feet.

I’ve been building raised gardens and flower beds in the backyard on the weekend. I have my daughters plant lettuce, jalapeños, green beans, cabbage, corn, bell peppers, onions, tomatoes, and strawberries. In other beds they can plant flowers and other shit they like. It’s their responsibility to take care of all of them and then I’m gonna make fresh salsa eat the shit out of it when it’s ready.

It’s nice to have them outside and away from the TV.

For those going crazy, Amazon is running a Buy 2, Get 1 Free sale for video and board games. Think it’s only for today

Some decent stuff, some being delivered quickly.   They ran a Buy 2/Get 1 on kids books a few days ago, so they maybe doing this a lot.

we've been playing code names a couple times over the week.  It has given me fresh insight into how fucked up the rest of my family's brains work. Especially the wife and daughter. What is curious though is that the oldest and middle have some crazy psychic connection.

Same.  Started as a pup chasing the left handed hammers from g-fathers truck bed or the board stretcher every summer.

For the parents doing the Easter Bunny thing, if Amazon's shipping for whatever you are after is scary, try Walmart and Target.  They are delivering toys pretty quickly (just make sure that it's in stock).   Amazon has obviously their priorities, and they are sold out of a lot of stuff, and Walmart seems to be shipping stuff from several states away, but they are getting it here fast.

Edit: Just checked the tracking, stuff coming from California, Georgia, and Forth Worh.  Going to keep that stuff outside for a few days and it'll get bleach wiped.

Just spent half the day , starting at 8am, doing stuff to get our kid up and running and ready for school on Monday, including a Zoom meeting with his class.  We've been doing stuff the teacher "suggested" (she wasn't allowed to require it) for the past week or so, along with some stuff my wife had him doing (handwriting, etc.), but there was not as tight of a schedule.

There's going to be a helluva lot of people shocked by how much they have to do.  I'm betting many are thinking it'll just be some kind of screen time thing they can stick the kids on for hours at a time.  Instead, there's going to be schedules, "office hours" to chat with the teachers via phone or Zoom, etc.

There are a whole lot of kids who are about to be getting a huge jump in technical education because of all of this.

Part of the material suggested by my 1st grader’s teacher for at home learning is on line. This site called “Brain Pop” has a short video on learning to tell time. f696698fba2d751fa91b616ad313276d.jpg

If you're not a big runner but want exercise ... or if your favorite trail is now closed, you can build your own 5k using the gmaps pedometer:

https://www.gmap-pedometer.com

Start at your house and plot a route through your neighborhood that adds up to 5k, or however far you want to go.  Then go walk or run it.  You'll likely be separated from other folks since not everyone is on the same trail, and at the end you can say you did a 5k.  You can preview the elevation change and make it hard or easy.

My favorite route goes out away from my house a bit, then circles back and spends the last half mile going around streets near my house, if I decide to cut it short.

So, I’ve got 2.5yo twin girls who are energetic, happy, inquisitive and full of life. Daddy has been cleaning up broken things and chasing little girls for 4 weeks now.

welp, my wife just rented a bouncy house four our back yard- like for kids birthdays. 1 week for $100. I dont understand the economics of it at all, but it’s far and away the best $100 I have invested probably ever. Depending on how fast the kiddos get tired of it, this monstrosity might be with us the rest of the plague.

Just buy yourself a trampoline - it’s been a life saver for our kids.

I put this in For Sale section, but it really belongs here.

I've got 5 Power Wheels Jeeps that the kids have outgrown and need good homes.

These are all modded to work with 2 batteries at 18v and they haul ass. I have the batteries, but you need to get a charger; they run about $15-20 (you may already have one for your car or motorcycle).

You should have some experience with minor electrical wiring, or you don't want one of these.

These are free if they're going to a good home, one per family.

If you're one of those Sanford & Son junk resellers, go fuck yourself, these aren't for you. They're only going to Surly homes with stressed parents and bored kids.

First PM gets their pick of the litter.

Alright, time to bump this thread. Does anyone have ideas for day or weekend trips from Austin for 8 year old and 12 year old boys? Or anything to do in Austin that's safe and not shut down? We want to do something before school starts back.

They're getting lonely and bored. My 12 year old is pretty introverted and was actually enjoying himself at the beginning of the quarantine because he could stay home and chill. Now that it's continuing on with no end in sight, he's done with it too.

Change his profile on Netflix to regular/everything instead of the kid's profile.  You won't see him for the rest of the summer.

Sea World is open.  You have to buy tickets in advance for a specific date as they are obviously limiting the number of daily visitors.

Ha ha. I thought about "accidently" leaving some porn out for him. I figured let's just advance puberty as quick as we can. We've got the time right now.
