My 10 would probably change tomorrow . . . and the following day . . .

Today's 10 (in no particular order):

Cheap Trick -- At Budokan

R.E.M. -- Murmur

Sidewinders -- Auntie Ramos' Pool Hall

AC/DC -- Hell's Hits (a 2-disc apparently authorized greatest hits package that wasn't released in the U.S.; one disc is Bon-era and the other disc is Brian Johnson-era)

The Who -- Who's Next

The Replacements -- Tim

Miles Davis -- Kind of Blue

Beatles -- White Album

Fabulous Thunderbirds -- Butt Rockin'

Bob Marley -- Legend

The Sidewinders (ultimately renamed The Sand Rubies, in the running for the worst band name in the history of ever) were one of those Arizona bands that just sounded like the desert.  Man, they were good.  Like a dusty Soul Asylum.

Simon & Garfunkel - Bridge Over Troubled Water
Johnny Cash - At Folsom Prison
Joe Patek Orch. - Happy Joe and Other Favorites
Pink Floyd - Animals
Frank Zappa - Lumpy Gravy
Willie Nelson - Red Headed Stranger
Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures

This is a great call.  Bob Marley is on my Mt Rushmore of music and that "album" in particular is one of the best of any genre ever.  However; I would argue as far as an actual "album" goes, it should be Exodus.

Here’s my 10 but sadly I could probably do my next 10 and that list would be close to this list as far as albums I like.  I guess I listen to way too much music since I had to leave off Kind of Blue, Revolver, Sgt. Peppers, Darkness on the Edge of Town, Thriller (yes I like the pedo’s album) etc....

Beatles- Abbey Road

Springsteen- Born to Run

Billy Joel- The Stranger

Eagles- Hotel California

Beastie Boys- Pauls Boutique

Van Helen-1984

Prince- Purple Rain

Bob Marley- Legend

Pink Floyd- Animals

Marvin Gaye- What’s Going On

I struggled to decide between Legend, Exodus, and Live!.  I ultimately picked Legend because that was the disc that really introduced me to Marley and was the touchstone for all the rest.

But, yeah, Exodus is magnificent.

All these solid lists just show me 10 is too short for the audiophiles. Good work gents.

11. JJ Cale - Naturally
I’ve given this record away so many times I’ve probably bought a dozen copies.

12. Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots

13. Neil Young - Decade

14. Buddy Holly - Greatest
Those last two I sat and worked out every tune on them because I was young and had the time. Even “Broken Arrow” Big influences.

15. Pink Floyd - Dark Side

16. Wilco - Summerteeth

17. Beastie Boys - Check Your Head

18. Nirvana - Nevermind

19. Van Halen - 1984

20. Django Reinhardt - some French collection my mom picked up for me on a trip to Paris.

I tried to avoid compilations and greatest hits since you tend to migrate to the top 10 bands/artists you like vs. albums but yeah Legend is fucking fantastic. Spring Break 85 FTW.

Albums only paint part of the picture.  AM and then FM radio and singles were the way to consume music as a youngun.  Growing up the only albums were my parents, so starting with one of theirs and the rest follow as in order of influence.

Oscar Brand - Bawdy Songs and Backroom Ballads

Various Greatest Hits albums - Rolling Stones, Beatles and Kinks (Ktel collection)

Queen - A Night at the Opera

After being sent a tape of George Gmarc's show in the early 80's, I started listening to British and alternative music.

The Jam - All Mod Cons

REM - Murmur

Worked in a record store in Florida and these albums were always on the playlist.

UB40 - Signing Off

Parliament - Mothership Connection

Began working at a place that had live country music.  Introduced to TVZ, Steve Goodman and Guy Clark.

John Prine - first album

Leonard Cohen - Greatest Hits (average one night stand that finished with her playing this album in the morning)

RIchard and Linda Thompson - Shoot out the Lights

So much left out. I need a beer.

I almost went Revolver but decided on Sgt Pepper.  Moondance is a great choice.  love the Smithereens.  I keep hoping they'll come through, even if it is without Pat(RIP), but they rarely come to Texas for some reason.

Revolver vs. Sgt. Pepper -- It's like trying to choose between your kids.  Both were groundbreaking.

Smithereens -- Saw 'em with Marshall Crenshaw a little over a year ago, and it was a great time.  MC can't sing the songs like Pat did -- that was one downside.  But I hear some of those songs and I just can't imagine anyone but Pat singing them, so I'm somewhat biased.  And for whatever reason they didn't do any Marshall Crenshaw songs (it would have been great to hear them sing Whenever You're On My Mind), but whatever.

But what helped make it a great show was that they got all the other members of the band more involved in the show.  Jim Babjak sang lead on a song.  Dennis (!) sang lead on another song.  They told stories about Pat and how they started up the band.  They had Mike Mesaros back in the band on bass, and he was as loose and animated as I've ever seen him.  He even spoke to the crowd -- told a story about the band's early days, going over to Jim Babjak's house to practice and how he could still smell the paprika from all the meat that Jim's dad would hang and cure in the basement of the house where they would be practicing.  I'd never seen Mike say a word on stage before, so it was great to see him acting so loose.  They brought out David Marks (former Beach Boy) and had him sing lead on a couple old Beach Boys tunes, and they sounded great.  They brought out Severo Jornacion for a couple songs, and it was good to see "The Thrilla" again.

It was tremendous.  I hope they get down to your neck of the woods someday.

Some might give me flak for putting three greatest hits albums on my list.  But I had those cassettes playing nonstop from my early teen years right through undergrad.  Lord Huron is the most recent addition.  It hasn't had the longevity in my life like the others (not yet), but I fucking love that album.

Darkness has always been one of my favorites, but I listened to it a lot in 2019 during my divorce.

yeah,  I'm still pissed I never saw them live.  they could probably get someone who sounds more like pat but I saw an interview where they don't really care about that.  they just want to play the songs and have a singer they like to be around.   I wonder if Robin Wilson(the other guest singer they use) is a bit better.

I thought about the Eagles greatest hits as well. And we’re not the only ones. I remember hearing it was something like top three in all time sales? I don’t care enough to look it up, but I remember everyone had a copy.

I saw The Smithereens at The Back Room, of all places.  Stood right up front.  They were tremendous.  Very odd venue for a non-metal band, but nobody cared.

Saw them at The Bronco Bowl Feb. 1990. (RIP Pat and The Bronco Bowl)
Opening band was Camper Van Beethoven, the immensely talented David Lowery’s band. They broke up two months later and Lowery formed Cracker.

What a great show it was.

Stone Roses - Stone Roses

Not my top 10, but that's a damn good one.  Discovered it my freshman year in college and wore it out.  I heard in an interview with The Edge that U2 was listening to a lot of Stone Roses during the creation of Actung Baby and they were one of the bands that influenced the sound of that album.

I listened to and bought a lot of albums early in life but then went a long time not buying any albums. Once napster came around I cherrypicked the best stuff from an album and ignored the rest and mostly do that to this day. I have spent a lot of time over the last few days listening to some of the albums listed and realize I missed out on some good shit. Thanks for the suggestions, it's been fun.

Hendrix- Band of Gypsies

Zappa- Weaselsrippedmyflesh

Quicksilver Messenger Service- Happy Trails

Pink Floyd- Animals

PF- DSOTM

Santana- Abraxas

David Crosby- If I Could Only Remember My Name
