College Football in 2020 in danger?

There's no doubt that shutdowns slow the spread, but if the virus is just waiting there at the end of the shutdown, your only hope of society completely avoiding it is to wait for a vaccine.

Which is pretty much what I have resigned myself to.

I have, perhaps unjustified, optimism we will have one in three or four months though.

A real interesting ethics study is emerging from OU & Tech (and other schools that have publicly stated a desire to play football in the fall AND are reporting CV19 cases)

Given the unknowns around long term effects on a person post CV19 do you allow even if medical staff (which are admittedly biased) clears them to return a player to play football this season or do you make them sit a longer period of time to demonstrate no ill effects?

Or do you just do this for players that showed active symptoms vs being asymptomatic? There is no ONE version of CV19 illness, seems to be kind of like real estate in that they way the virus presents in people can vary significantly even in family groups/teams etc

Or do you allow players once they are past quarantine period to return (similar to concussion protocol)

Given that I have no faith that we will have a viable vaccine at scale (even for next year's CFB season) this dilemma will be something to wrestle with.

Do we treat post CV19 infections in players similar to a concussion protocol type deal or as something completely different? Interesting to see where things land for college athletics in general.

Exactly.

Half of the country thinks we should start figuring out how we get back to normal and half of the country thinks we should exercise restraint as we do so.  Sounds like both halves are right to me.

Of close to 50,000 students and faculty, we should definitely cancel for 1-2% infection rate,

Exactly.  Notre Dame has about 450 cases in a much smaller community.  So again we beat Bama if you consider stuff other than the score.

LOL, dumbest take ever.  'The SEC would have no choice but to give in after the other conferences did?'  LMAO

That's their wet dream.  They would have absolutely LOVED to have an only SEC final 4.  And they have enough cache that the NCAA would have let them roll w that while collecting much needed checks.  Can you imagine aggy?  Hide the sheep.

You'd have to hide the sheep regardless.

Whoa, didn't pull a punch...

Digest these numbers from Iowa’s 2018–19 Department of Education filing: men’s gymnastics rang up a paltry $183,481 in operating expenses; men’s swimming was $263,357; women’s swimming was $244,141; and men’s tennis was $217,608. Combined total: just under $900,000.

Now remember this: Iowa paid its alleged racist bully of a football strength coach $1.1 million in a separation agreement earlier this summer. Chris Doyle, described by a host of former Hawkeyes as the worst kind of coaching meathead, got more money to go away than it cost to operate four programs combined.

After creating nightmarish negative publicity for Iowa football, Doyle’s separation hush money was the equivalent of 15 months’ pay. He had been the highest-paid strength coach in the country at $800,000 per year. Meanwhile, Iowa swimmers were prepared to pay for their own suits and goggles this swim season.

Kirk is an asshole and should be embarrassed.

Barta gave football coach Kirk Ferentz one of the most ludicrous contracts of all time in 2010, a 10-year deal worth $42 million with all buyouts lopsidedly in favor of the coach. In the decade since, Ferentz has won one (1) Big Ten divisional title and zero (0) conference titles.

He could have took a pay cut to help out.

I need a ruling from the Surly legal elite.

Is there a Title IX issue that arises when you cancel all sports but one that is a single gender sport? Seems as though a female athlete who has her sport cut while the boys play on would have a claim of gender discrimination under Title IX.

If they don’t play at all? Sure. But football is the only sport that makes money at most schools. There’s no budget for the other sports without it. They’ll delay women’s sports, not cancel them.

2 things of note:

So we might actually live to see realignment before COVID catches up to us..? Who'd have thought that just back in May...

Anyway some ol' fooseball is about ready to kickoff, (as said) if ESPN can get Nebraska/ Colorado/ USC & pals, XII wins...

Tossing aside that conferences usually dictate a minimum amount of sports required to participate, you would have a Title IX issue with your hypothetical above.  It covers a lot of areas, but in participation it looks at total female opportunities vs male opportunities.   Usually to be in compliance you need to either be even OR you can be uneven but offer every competitive sport that can be staged.   So, you could have an imbalance of more men to women athletes, as long as you were fielding every female athletic team possible.   Once you don't though (e.g. Iowa, Stanford, etc) the cuts come hard and fast to get to even.  That's why when you see cuts like these they are generally weighted towards the non-revenue male sports (In the Iowa article, 3 male and 1 female) because there is no female sport, or any other sport for that matter, that has as many scholarships as football.

In the beginning they're talking about how OU Athletics has been affected by covid in so many ways.

They both feel the biggest issue is sourcing enough dicks during this pandemic. Apparently Riley has been traveling all over the country trying to find enough to satisfy the whole team.

Even though he's the best  in the business, he still can't find enough dicks.

Then they speculate if OU was in the Big 10 or SEC, would be easier to find more dicks.
