Recommend me a mesh router

Recommended Posts

I switched to Google Nest Wi-fi because it was the only one I could find that could track data usage by device over time. Others had real-time stats (not real helpful) but because of monthly data cap issues I needed to know what was sucking data.

It's been set it and forget it for me. If you get the Router Dual pack instead of Router + Access  Point combo you can also use Ethernet back-haul on both (one acts like access point).

I fucking hate the Orbi. It has software updates way too often and instead of it being overnight, it’s always between 10am-3pm. It’s down completely for 20 minutes while doing it and it never successfully restarts. You have to get up and hard boot it to get it working again.

The Eero Pro I mentioned earlier supports high speeds. This is a Speedtest from my phone.

And the Eero Gateway that is connected directly into the router that your ISP provides is constantly running its own speed test and logs the results.

I have eero and it's been great. But they just got bought by Amazon, which I wasn't thrilled to hear.

That’s awful. I hadn’t heard that. Fuck Amazon and Google.

Fuck, I hadn't heard that either.  So Amazon is listening to all my shit now. Fuck people who develop something good and then want to just sell out and go sit on the beach collecting 20%.

Just bought these yesterday. Gotdamn magical. My wife's makeshift office (aka our closet) was getting about 1-2mbps. Now she's getting around 250mbps, and I haven't even finished the instal that supposedly makes it even faster. Huge PITA to setup around my Google Fiber Network Box though. I need to turn off the wifi from that box to reduce interference, but it took so fucking long to get it to play nice with the Orbi that I don't want to mess with it again until the weekend when I can afford potentially fucking everything up.

Weird. I’ve never once had it disrupt anything.

Do you need to go Tri-Band vs dual? I need to figure out better options than what I’m doing now (netgear w/ extender - it sucks). My lot/house is long and I want Wi-Fi on the far side in my garage. Wi-Fi router isn’t currently in the office on the opposite side of the house/lot.

that speed.... <300Mbps is not a challenge for today's devices though.  if that's the WAN speed you get from your phone while hidden in a corner of a concrete basement, that's good results.

but the challenge for some is the LAN speed, particularly for a household full of smart devices always communicating -- IP cams, baby monitors, networked music, streaming music from webs, HD porn, etc

Get the Orbi AC3000 with 3 satellites and don't look back

Looking back at all the times I would fight having dual Netgear routers, and all the money I wasted buying higher end ones, the Google meshes have been flawless by compare.

I’m in this boat. I’ve always had issues in the past with previous high end routers. Fuck Netgear.

Google Wifi has been a godsend. Set it and forget it.

I understand. The speed test I posted from my phone yesterday was with a son playing Fortnite and a wife holding Zoom meetings. Here is what I get on my laptop.

And here is what I get on my phone from the farthest point I can get in my yard. This is through two hardy plank walls and a brick wall. It’s probably about 65-75 feet away from the closest AP. If I am somewhere in the yard without obstructions, I get much faster speeds.

Orbi fan here. I have two units and it works very well in my home. It depends on your home’s layout. I’ve had to reset it (by turning it off and then back on) a few times in a couple of years but overall it’s been great. And that may have been something going on with Comcast.

I thought I’d circle back with more performance reports. This is my speed test connected to the same device where my son Is FaceTiming his friend, playing Fortnite, and also streaming music. I’m in the front porch about 20 feet away from the AP, but there is a brick wall between us.

Had a Velop system and was happy with it. When we moved in December, I had Cat 6 run to all the rooms and had 3 access points mounted in the house. That system has been much more stable and a big improvement.

Just to balance out some of the Orbi love. I fall in the 50% it sucks, worst product ever bought category that CooterBrown mentioned. I'm an IT software/networking guy by trade so I get that setup can be complicated or personal based on many variables.  That said, when Orbi works its awesome, likely the fastest out there (not that speeds over 50M really mean much) but when it doesn't it's just frustrating as hell. Every time they pushed an update something broke or I had to reset it, most times from factory defaults. Multiple times after an "auto" update it started a broadcast storm taking down my entire network until I could unplug the units and reset them. Couldn't take the wife/kids saying internet not working again...

To minimize issues I found that basically they suck at updates, avoid them like the plague. Use it as your primary router and not behind another one.

About a year ago (after 2 years) I couldn't take it anymore and also wanted something to track daily per device use over months and switched to using Google. I haven't touched it since that day.

Before buying an Orbi, just go look at different vendors "help" forums so you at least know what you might be facing.

I picked up the Orbi 3 pack on Woot It seems pretty good to me.  My free trial of Netgear Armor security just expired.  Is it worth it for the $70 annual subscription?  It seems like not a bad idea if it protects everything on my network.  I have everything going through this system.  I even have my 24 port switch plugged into it.

The lady wanted better wifi on the patio so she could Happy Hour Zoom with her Dallas friends, so I picked one of these mesh systems last weekend and set it all up on Saturday.

We just go upgraded to 400mb Spectrum internet on Wednesday last week. Real speeds were usually around 437mb in the room that had the router in it.

Since all I was trying to do was get ~50mb service to the patio, I went cheap and bought the TP-Link Deco. 1 base and two relays. I think it was about $120.

Once it was all set up, speedtest results showed a drop of about 40% speed in every location around the house that was previously tested without the mesh installed.

At that point, I decided to un-lazy myself and crawl up in the attic and move the location of the Spectrum equipment from the far back corner of the house to the more central living space, which solved the initial problem of slow internet on the patio, and removed a second layer of troubleshooting issues by adding the mesh.

Boxed the mesh back up and gave it to my neighbor to see if he had any better luck getting wifi out to his new outdoor kitchen. I picked it up off the porch when Amazon rang the doorbell, installed and configured it, tested it, unhooked it and re-boxed it and gave it away all in under three hours.

TL/DR: Don't by the TP-Link Deco system.

So that’s the AC2200 (RBK43). How does it differ from the AC3000(RBK50)? I cannot find an AC3000 3 pack.

I think the updating issues just mentioned are a netgear thing. I updated my Nighthawk router this morning and our internet went down for a while. Had to reset it and the modem. 30 minutes later it was up like nothing had happened.

I need something soon. Getting pissed with this extender and not having seem less movement (connects to extender when I pull in garage and stays that way until it loses the connection in my bedroom or I manually switch it). Plus, no love in the far side of the garage where the TV is (not that there is anything to watch these days).

Costco used to offer the three pack of the RBK50's. Not sure if they still do.

Woot had an orbi deal the other day for the 3 pack of the AC3000 $229. I scooped it up. Supposed to be here Wednesday. Now if I could just get fiber.

So this is what I got. I think it was a refurb. The setup was not that great. Very straightforward but I had to do it 3-4x before it took. My speeds are impetuous, my style is impregnable. I went from ~ 40 down throughout the house to 180 in the back yard and 250 in most other places (cable). But I'm having weird hiccups and I don't know if it's my ISP or my new setup. I rarely had hiccups before. I will be watching a show on a streaming service and I will get a 2-3 second pause before it resumes. Today my internet dropped while I was on a web call which I've been doing for ~ 10 years without any drops. But my phone still shows ~ 250 down at the same time. wth.

A lot ISP have been having problems due to the increase in the demand but is the router prompting for an update?
