Where are they located?  One of the great tragedies of all this polarization is that otherwise decent people don't even know they exist in an echo chamber.

Brother lives in College Station but his job is he's a pilot that flies jets on the east coast, so he's in PA, MA, NY, Canada, NH etc.

Mom and dad live in Kingwood. Mom is a college professor and dad was a successful professional most of his life.  They lived in Europe for 8 years and just came home 3 or so years ago.

It's not like they are trapped in some bubble where they don't get out and see things and people. It's really really strange.  The only thing I can think is that the narrative last time around was how shitty the polls were (they weren't- there just happened to be under polled states in what people presumed was an uncrackable blue wall) but on balance the polls had Hillary at 3 or 4 and she wont by 2 ish- so that wasn't it.  There's an entirely different set up when every poll runs from Biden +3 to Biden +14.

If IBD is correct (I doubt it is) and it's a 3 point national race then sure, Trump could have a decent ~45 or 50% chance of winning an electoral college squeeker but that's an internet poll and a clear outlier.  I think that old, mostly wrong narrative have Dems spooked and Trumpsters overly confident.

Also, it's funny that they continue to refer to him as "your boy Biden". I'm like- he's not my boy-I'm not voting for him or Trump- but that doesn't mean I've lot all ability to look at reason or data. If I pick Alabama to run roughshod over Auburn it's not because I'm a Bama backer or a Saban worshiper it's b/c I can tell that Bo Nix sucks donkey dick and Bama has them out athleted all over the field. But, if you say "yeah- I'm pretty sure Biden will win" it's OMG- how can you be for Biden.  Politics makes otherwise normal people stupid.  There was a reason we used to teach people not to talk about politics or religion in polite society.

From my experience, older Iranians here in the U.S. like Trump. All my dad's friends post pro-Trump shit as well.

I can't explain how frustrating it is that the Iranian men in my family, who literally had to flee their home country when Khomeini took power, find themselves attracted to Trump.

In a way, it's comforting to learn that old Iranians are fucking dumb, like us. It's a warm bond.

It's kind of insulting to people who have inserted themselves into wood chippers to solicit advice from people who haven't been inside one.

This is so good I forgot what I was going to post

Every time I see them they get more and more convinced they are winning the bet and Trump is on the precipice of an electoral rout.

I listen to a lot of right-wing talk radio and they’ve been feeding the base that Trump is going to win and it’s not going to be close.

My Trump supporting relatives were shocked the other day when I said Biden is up in the polls. They get their news from Fox and Rush.

why would right-wing radio be pushing the narrative that Trump is going to win big...wouldn't that depress Trump turnout....unless they WANTa Biden win so they can go whole hog shit on the constant hatred train again for the next several years.     Princess Bride/poisoned chalice

NO.  Almost all evidence on economics type studies points to "it's good for your voter base and electoral chances to have people believe you are going to win and you are the favorite.  It's not really close in any study. I mentioned this a couple weeks ago and LL either backed me up or posted the actual studies- but it's a thing, and it's for sure, and it's not really worth talking about.

It's also why internal polls are released showing your candidate doing well/winning/within the margin of error/ whatever the happiest plausible outcome is. Sure, there will be a note exorting- don't let up- we need your support- but the main thing is the number showing you are a winner. America likes to jump on a bandwaggon and doesn't like to spend their time going out to vote for a loser in a lost cause.

My family all knows where the polls are. They just say it's stupid and not reality.  They aren't unaware of what the numbers are saying.

My dad was an engineering prof at a school in the midwest, and when that all went down it started getting a strong influx of Iranian engineering students.  We took several under our wing, as we had students from India, Viet Nam, Africa, etc., sort of a "cultural exchange" without room & board.

Man, I learned so much about the middle east during those years.  It was really formative.  I'm glad my parents extended their hands to those guys.  (Every single Iranian student was male, to my recollection.)

The polls could be wrong.  But there is just as high a likelihood that they are wrong in one direction as in the other.

Actually, there's probably a slightly higher chance that the polls are underestimating Biden's support.  The polls in 2016 underestimated Trump's support.  Pollsters are human; they want to be right.  So they always go in and see if they can identify why they missed so that they can fix it.  Sometimes it works; a lot of time they overcorrect.

Honestly, I think this is the case. We'll find out soon enough.

Yeah, but then the people started getting all uppity with ideas and shit.

People have always had ideas and shit. And talking about them has always led to conflict.  Sometimes bloodshed.  Thus why I said polite society had the prohibition against talking about them.
I'm perfectly happy with the argument we should not prefer to be part of polite society- but it seems to me that you have to accept the lack of decorum that comes with allowing the rabble to engage with their uppity ideas and shit and not bemoan the lack of cohesion that comes from that. It, like most of life, is a seesaw.

Last night we went to dinner over at my rich Trumpkin in-laws house. Our 3 year old son loves hanging out over there. They know my wife and I are very liberal. Fox News was turned off, watched a little golf, no politics talk AT ALL, son got to play in a sand pit. Lovely night.

Then we loaded up the car and started to drive off. We turned to wave goodbye and my MiL is waving this flag/banner at us.

Trump_blue_Porch_sign__74916.1601577792.

Literally trolled us to end the night.

And that's how you should do it.  Assuming it was good natured which it sounds like it probably was

Sure. Anyone who votes for trump is a fascist nazi pedophile unclefucker. Or- you could take it at face value that they were polite and respectful hosts, had a nice night with their family, and then they gave them a little shit.
but nah- he should probably respond by refusing to allow them to ever see their grandkids and maybe blow up their home for good measure, just to be safe.

Like I said- assuming it’s good natured. And it’s a mom doing it to her daughter. After it sounds like they had a good time. I’m assuming they love each other based upon the set up of the story.

I absolutely think that was her intention. But politics is probably the main obstacle that has drifted us apart from my in-laws (my wife's and their decision, not mine) over the last few years. So the whole situation has really ended up being sad from my point of view.

My father, who does taxes for a living, is a big Trumpkin. He brought up the tax returns and started talking about how everyone minimizes their taxes and there’s no evidence that Trump cheated.

i said “I don’t think he cheated. I think he’s just broke.”

The silence was deafening.

That’s been my take with my wife. Bad businessman. Can’t turn a profit on a casino. Don’t owe taxes on a loss.

Know your audience I guess. That is sad. When my brother starts rambling about aTM I just ignore it and change the subject.  It’s still family.
last weekend we visited my parents on Saturday (trumpkins) and my in-laws on Sunday, hard core anti trump Dems and managed to have a fun time with each. Maybe we are weird. I’d like to think people don’t hate their family over politics in real life.

I've definitely noticed this as well, and it's not just Trump fanatics. I know several nervous DEM guys that just assume Trump will win again no matter what kind of evidence you show them.

On the other hand (and not saying your family is like this), but the true die-hards are absolutely convinced that not only will Trump win, but he'll completely dominate and end up with more EV than 2016, possibly even win the PV.

It seems to basically boil down to "2016 polls were wrong, therefore the exact same thing will definitely happen this time. Trump gets 30K at his rallies while senile Joe hasn't left his nursing home in months!"

These are the same people who think every single news story is good for Trump/bad for Biden's chances. Also the same people who literally a week ago were predicting that Biden would come down with COVID to avoid having to debate.

So the are Fox News viewers.

Cool. If we are related to them we should probably unpeople them.  If they are on our street maybe burn their house down. It's only 45% of the voting public. We should send them all to concentration camps or something.

None of that upsets me. You can choose to do whatever you want. I choose to internally roll my eyes whenever I hear someone talking about how awesome he is. And I choose to roll my eyes whenever someone blames him for rain on their wedding day or some other nonsense that has nothing really to do with him, which happens a lot (note- not only to him- but every president that we've ever had- it's the nature of the job).

They should be shamed for their bad opinions and given the opportunity to learn. If they understand who he is and still support him, then yes, they are bad people. The world is full of bad people. We shouldn't mistreat them, but we don't need to coddle them either.

No, but the hubris of thinking that America going down the path to fascism doesn't mean that at one point one may have to go along to get along and  turn a blind eye to shit that is happening to people near you is a mistake. Are we there yet? You would perhaps say no. But that's because it hasn't happened to you. We have had multiple attacks on civil rights and institutions and it's not going to get better if we don't stop it and back up the truck. It will go from not talking about politics because it's polite to discuss other topics to not talking about politics because people get detained. The rank and file that are marching in other countries sure aren't marching because it's nice weather or they took a day off work to see their friends.

It's not hyperbole.

I’ve been saying it for awhile now. Biden’s chances look damn good in Arizona and it could be a very important state for him. However, Biden needs to actually go and spend some time in Arizona. Don’t make the same mistake Clinton did in 2016. The people usually want you to visit their state to get their votes if it’s going to be close.

They're scheduled to go on Thursday.  Both Biden and Harris.  Did something happen?

Yeah this shit is pretty fucking over. Covid was the nail in the coffin, when you see the early voting numbers in texas and they line up with the rest of the states who have started you will understand. People are not fucking around this election, there are 10s of millions more voters registered this election and all of them intend to vote. There is 0 chance for a Trump win if people vote and I've never seen people so excited to vote.

Debate is Wednesday not Thursday. Wednesday evening. (Edit to add-sorry misunderstood you. Debate is Wednesday and Harris has been in Utah since this weekend so now Biden can join her and they can pull in more people with the two of them.
