Thats a low bar. I do wonder what's next on the grift list. She's gotten a taste of that GQP magasphere, so I doubt she'll go back to eldercare or whatever she was doing beforehand. Maybe Cruz can teach her the ins and outs of podcasting.

Probably not.  That would be unwise in advance of her planned bid for a Congressional seat.

John Carter is retiring in 26 and Tulsi Gabbard was expected to run for his seat. Presumably she’ll be occupied, so If Kelly wants to move a few miles NW she could give it a shot. I was more surprised by Kelly losing than anything else that happened on Election Day.

I've heard Bill Gravell has called dibs on that seat, but who knows.

In other city council news, Kirk Watson is likely to win reelection and avoid a runoff by 14 votes.  He currently has 50.0041% of the vote.

He raised three times more than the total contributions of his four opponents.

I’ve been involved at city hall and she is well respected. She just called out a CM’s husband on her Twitter. It’s comical thinking about her past, but holy shit. She overcame it and has a legacy now.

you all will still say “she” is “‘me” but we are living in a really weird timeline. Anything is possible.

She was the only CC member to point out the insanity that Austin has a bigger budget than Dallas, San Antonio and FT Worth.

2024-2025 ATX $5.9 Billion

Dallas $4.97 B

SATX $3.4 B

Ft Worth $2.3 B

We get what we vote for

Isn't that because Austin Energy is part of the City government? It isn't an apples to apples comparison.

Correct. If you back out the AE chunk of the budget (which is at worst revenue neutral, actually a positive to the budget), that budget number gets a lot smaller.

$1.86 billion next year, with $125 million going to the city as a general fund transfer.

Lol. Being elected to the city council in any city, no matter the size, is completely forgettable. Ask ten random people in Austin who she is and you would be lucky to get one that could identify who she is.

I agree with all this. She deserved to keep her post and her loss is the most shocked I’ve been by a race since Zo Qadri’s first election. I’m sure I won’t like her politics beyond the local level but her service to the city was exemplary.
That said, I don’t think she needed to call out Jeremy Suri. There’s already enough unkindness in this town, but that’s part of what comes with the job. He’s a public figure as well, and his words and actions speak for themselves.

Sure, but what you/I hear about is a usually a poor proxy for what’s happening because it’s a narrow sample. For council races I tend to look at the machines + the fundamentals. Krista Laine CLEARLY had the machine advantage, but I thought the Republicans would do a better job of protecting their one and only local beachhead, and on top of that the fact that Kelly has been really good at the job has to matter at least a little.
What I think happened to Kelly was simply the cost of being a visibly Republican candidate in a local Austin race in a presidential year.

Austin City Council approved its $5.9 billion 2024-2025 budget — a $400 million increase from last year and the city’s largest budget yet.

Well over half of the spending will go toward Austin’s essentials. The city’s largest departments — Austin Energy and Austin Water — make up 41% (or ~$2.4 billion) of the expenses.

$3.5 Billion vs SATX $3.4 Billion

2023 population

ATX 979,882

SATX 1.495 Million

Correct.  And AE is most of that $2.4 billion, at $1.86 billion.  San Antonio, on the other hand, does NOT include CPS's total budget in its city budget (it just includes the transfer made to the city by CPS).

So, if you want to do an apples-to-apples comparison (both budgets without the expense side of the electric utility, you're closer to the comparison you cite.  There are certainly numerous reasons why the Austin budget on a per capita basis is higher than SA's, but that doesn't account for all of it, by far.  That is, the per capita budget delta isn't entirely on city government.....but a good chunk of it IS on them.

It's not just that Austin hasn't done a great job at managing its budget though (that's a big part of it).  Rather, a big takeaway here is that....drumroll....San Antonio is actually one of the best-run cities in the state, probably by far the best run of the large cities.  Seriously, lots of folks should look at how SA does things and say "we should do more of that."  Nobody's perfect, of course, but SA does things better than most.
