Donald Trump 2018

It was interesting that Obama not only promoted an increase in the minimum wage, but tuition free public college and Medicare for all. He even mentioned Warren's idea of putting employees on corporate boards.

The progressive agenda certainly appears to be going mainstream. I am looking forward to hearing more Obama speaches over the next couple months as a counterpoint to Trump.

Lol...Mike Pence fucked up his answer to the question on Face the Nation asking if one of his staffers wrote the op-ed and made them reshoot it so he could give a better answer. He first said "I hope not." In the second take he said he misunderstood the question and of course he's certain it wasn't anyone on his staff.

I'm warming to the proposition that he's the author.

Kellyanne Conway on Meet the Press is a fucking beating.  She knows she has no argument so she just talks until the clock runs out without answering any questions.  This is fucking insane.

I treat her like any other troll. I ignore her. She speaks only in bullshit so it's a waste of time to pay her any attention.

This is all warm and fuzzy and well and good, but this isn't just some difference in ideology of the two parties.  The people who still support him are way gone.  They actually ARE brainwashed and there's no coming back.  I think there are a good number of people who voted for him who have seen the error of their ways, even if they don't go out of their way to publicly admit it.  I don't think they would vote for him again.  But 30% of this country are lost souls.  They aren't coming back.

Fortunately, many of them are quite old, and the country will become better off as they one-by-one they die of whatever the olds die of.  The rest are stupid and/or gullible, so they will have less influence than if they were a core group of educated over-achievers.    And army of Swams is still Swam-like.

I think you underestimate how many successful white collar people voted for Trump and would again vs Hillary.

Edited to add: it’s not just my dad and all his friends. It’s people who will be voting for thirty more years at least.

I do not.  I can understand a Trump vote then - or at least folks thinking that much of his actual personality was just an act - with the Real Donald emerging after his election.  And I get the Hillary aspect.   I am talking about the right here and now.   If one is a real-time Trumpkin as I type this, they are beyond hope.  They are either deplorable, or intensely stupid, or turnip truck naive on steroids.    And I think the three categories roughly line up with the percentage of now-time Trumpkins, with the greater number being the former and the lesser number the latter.

All college educated voters broke for Hillary.

White college educated voters broke for Trump.

It’s her or Rudy at this point. Who would you choose?

Neither.  If no one who isn't a compulsive liar is willing to speak on behalf of the administration, then their "take" on things shouldn't be on air other than clips demonstrating their lies.  They should not get air time to lie to the American people.  If they want to be on serious news programs their spokespeople need to get somewhere near the vicinity of the truth.

No he’s correct. Plenty of normal guys I fish with. Don’t follow politics, don’t read long-form journalism, maybe a bit of Fox News etc. They aren’t cruel or hateful either. Just enjoying the F250, house on the West End/ or POC and the deer lease. Millions of willfully ignorant out there.
Unfortunately Democracies require a well informed electorate.
In that regard we are fucked.

Got into it with a family member and it devolved into Beto is a socialist and hates America and ANTIFA and communism and only conservatives can be Christian. He paid into the system so his healthcare and pension was earned and is not a form of social welfare and everyone else is a socialist and all Ted Cruz and Donald Trump want to do is to keep America America. It was down right demoralizing.

I am so thankful that my family can not stand the traitor or republicans. Makes get togethers very nice knowing I have sane family members.

My mother voted for Trump because he wasn't Hillary.

Two years later, she absolutely loathes Donald Trump. She won't be voting for him again.

I imagine there are a lot of people like that.

My grandparents are stuck in the Small Town, America bubble and are active members in a small Christian congregation. It's amazing how they are looking the other way on all of the things Trump does purely because they have been convinced that the Democrats want to destroy Christianity and legalize sin. They are both in their 80's.

I have been sitting on a very long diatribe about the decline of the status of elders in modern society, but I haven't found the right thread for it, yet. There has been a massive societal change in something that has been a norm for literally all of human history and I haven't seen any articles that talk about it. The elders have made themselves obsolete and a danger to society by their inaction. If I didn't have 5 hours of studying left to do for the weekend, I'd sit down and hash it out.

I think this is the case for a lot more Trump voters than we think. Many realize they can get the "Conservative" things they want from your run-of-the-mill Republican without all the Trump baggage and embarrassment.

And yes, I do see the irony/hypocrisy considering they didn't vote Hillary because of her baggage. But when has hypocrisy not been part of American politics?

I am pretty stern in my position of respect, admiration and caring for our elders so we can show we first value life and second glean from them as much wisdom as we can. The problem is I see not wisdom but something entirely different and that makes the rest really hard. Same in professional circles too.

What you see is the result of brainwashing via the media, ie Fox News and talk radio. It’s much easier to do that to the elderly and children than those in the middle. And that is what they have done.

The Rush/Fox narrative is def part of it. "The Libtards have run roughshod over the good conservatives for over 20 years. Now it's time for payback."

And Rush/Fox continue to validate the true believers' faith in Trump even now.

My response to you is that you have to get your head around the idea that they are not deplorable, stupid, or naive (depending on your definition of course). They absolutely equivocate the misdoings of their opponents with anything that Trump has done (“hey nothing has been proven!”) and the economy is all they need to point to for backup that what we are dealing with now is better than the alternative. Classic example is my old boss, VP at a very successful tech company in Texas.

I’m actually surprised you haven’t run into a single case of this. It’s fucking fascinating.
