Donald Trump 2018

From an earlier post quoting Alison Frankel:

Quote

Every eulogy at McCain’s funeral has the exact same subtext. Trump isn’t at the ceremony and no one has uttered his name. But man, the messages couldn’t be clearer.

Trump has made a mockery of various political norms and protocols, as well as having a tendency to disrespect commonly practiced traditions. So I guess turnabout is fair play and civility can be disregarded by all, under any circumstances. It's a shame but I've become so jaded that it doesn't surprise me that it now seems acceptable to use a death as an opportunity to diminish someone (anyone) and to use a eulogy as a vehicle to deliver political shots.

How dare they honor an American hero who dedicated his life to serving his country while a cowardly lyin' shitgibbon who never served anyone but himself occupies the White House?

Fuck you. Any other president in history, and hopefully in future history, would've been front and center paying McCain the well deserved respects from the highest office in the land.

Let me see if I have this straight.  In conservative logic, internet service itself is not a public utility, but private tech companies that operate on the internet are?

There is no logic. That is your mistake. There is no position.

Sigh. These.

There is no position, no logic, no philosophy. Just Team Trump. That is modern conservatism. Well done.

I think you just made my point: It’s entirely possible (even preferable) to honor someone without making snide remarks about another person—even if the remarks are true. But then again I’m one of the olds on this forum, so maybe a politicized eulogy is the new norm.

I am humbled by this recognition and flattered that my post is chosen from hundreds of comments from scores of scholarly Surly posters. However, if an obviously-not-in-contention post—such as “FUCK TRUMP”—can get a “like”, then is seems to me that being recognized as the leader for the prestigious title of “Most Decorumest Post” should be worth at least one measly pos rep.

This is exactly the funeral the deceased and his family wanted.

DECORUM! lol

If I shit on your floor at house party and tried to fuck your wife and daughter and offered to share my crack with your son, stole money and pissed in your bed, chances are you would not invite me to the next party.

And I would think you lacked decency because a long time ago, when you were a baby you shit on the floor, and peed your parents bed.

Question is, can you see the difference or just bothsides-ism?

Or in the words of Billy the Esteves, Reap it Murphy, you son of a bitch.

John McCain planned his own funeral.  Everyone who spoke and everyone who was invited had his approval.  It is the height of arrogance to suggest that quietly politicizing his funeral was somehow an insult to the man and his family.  He knew what he wanted, and he got it.  Those who criticize should (as usual) shut their fucking mouths.

Read where Trump gets up at 5:30 in the morning and doesn't go to the office until 11:30. In between, he watches Fox News - Tweets a lot about what he watched on Fox News and his pet statements against the Russian Investigation - and gets his hair fixed, which probably takes a couple of hours minimum. No reading up on important issues, no studying, no exercise.

Just wanted to let you that voted for him, and those that didn't, that this is what we're getting. He said he was going to WORK FOR US!!! 24/7 and that Obama was spending too much time on the golf course.

There are two problems with this view:

1) We live in a world where any praise of character, public decency and integrity is taken as implicit criticism of the president, because the supporters of the president acknowledge that the president is a low integrity, indecent character. Thus, it's not that the eulogy itself was politicized, it's that the reception is. And it probably should be, under the circumstances.

2) Drawing a contrast between the good things a person fought for in vain and the current, sad state of affairs is not a "snide remark". The offense you and others take measures the value of what you gave up when you decided that character didn't count as much as the conjectured decisions of hypothetical future judges.

Tell me more about decorum, that's rich.

That stat blows my fucking mind.  You can dislike the media, think they have a liberal slant, whatever, but to think they are "the enemy of the people" and that Donald Motherfucking Trump is actually the good guy who is trying to expose that enemy?  You live in fucking looney tunes land.  These people are too fucking stupid to exist.

They've chosen this brainwashing since Nixon resigned. They only listen to reinforcement of the notion that the drive-by media is out to get them and promote the ebil lib agenda.

If you have decided to embrace the notion that liberalism is anti-American and that the media is liberal, how can you come to any other conclusion than the media is the enemy as much as the ebil libs?

The GOPs used this to generate hate and votes for decades. The seeds were sown, the crops are mature. Now we reap.

Lockheed Martin solution to Russia/China problem: build more jets!

With a Raptor’s body and the JSF’s brain, the new jet would aim to answer the next decade’s Russian and Chinese threats.

Lockheed Martin is quietly pitching the U.S. Air Force a new variant of the F-22 Raptor, equipped with the F-35’s more modern mission avionics and some structural changes, Defense One has learned.

It is one of several options being shopped to the U.S.military and allies as Lockheed explores how it might upgrade its combat jets to counter Russian and Chinese threats anticipated by military officials in the coming decade, according to people with direct knowledge of the plan.

“You’re building a hybrid aircraft,” David Deptula, a retired Air Force lieutenant general who is now dean of the Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies. “It’s not an F-22. It’s not an F-35. It’s a combination thereof. That can be done much, much more rapidly than introducing a new design.”

The new variant — similar to one Lockheed is pitching to Japan — would incorporate the F-35’s more modern mission system and “other advancements in the stealth coatings and things of that nature,” according to a person familiar with the proposal.

is it manned?  If so, how futuristic is it?

So you’re saying that McCain vetted each eulogy?  That before his death he was aware and approved of the political undertones of the eulogies? Yeah, maybe so. But I’d rather think that he wasn’t petty enough to personally approve of the political ‘digs’ and I’d rather think that he wouldn’t approve of his wife and Presidents Obama and Bush volunteering to serve as surrogates to deliver one last parting shot at a man they all despised.

Well, let me try.

As a Trump supporter, you don’t get to use terms like decency, decorum, and class. You support a piece of human garbage who has broken just about every established norm of the office.

Clear enough, buddy?

Your whole point falls apart if I’m not a Trump supporter. And since I only have 50 posts on Surly it shouldn’t be hard for you to do a little research and back up your claim that I support Trump. Want to give it a shot, or will you admit that your main point can’t be supported and that your entire post should have been limited to “Well, let me try”?

Why would you think that? Since the president personally insulted John McCain on multiple occasions and has risen by attacking the values that McCain fought for, how would it be possible for Presidents Bush and Obama to praise the Senator and what he represented without implicitly rebuking the President?

48% of Republicans believe the press is the enemy of the people, and 43% believe the president should have the power to shut down news organizations https://brook.gs/2BsZoiu
I have to say, those underground Wal-Mart tunnels to the FEMA Camps and Death Panels are worth a second look now.

Too late. The wal mart jails are actually a real thing. Thankfully, we found a way to only use them for dirty Mexican kids, so real Americans were saved from that horror. Whew....close call there.

Did you vote for Trump? Do you support him? You answering directly is so much simpler than reviewing your posts.

In the interest of fairness, I did go glance at your posts. While you don’t state explicitly “I love Trump” you do enough rolling of your eyes at the people who think we are off the rails in a post about Krauthammer and you posted a lot in the AOC thread (I spent around a minute, sue me for being vague). I think we can at least characterize you as “concerned” about how things are going rather than horrified like many non-Trumpers are.

if you think that invalidates my point, I certainly won’t lose any sleep.

Conservatism has proven to be a pretext for pure self-interest.  By and large, conservatives push their principles not because they believe in them as a matter of principle, but because they are outcome-determinative in a way that benefits them.   And the second it isn't, conservatives seek government intervention to help them.  There are some people who really believe in conservative principles, but for most, it's more than just a happy accident that conservative policy helps them personally at the expense of most other Americans.

This is a very astute observation.

I don't understand how fans of a regime that constantly talks shit, can be so aggrieved when the same regime is publicly rebuked.

Well, what you have to understand is that they’re complete fucking pussies.

Seriously, these folks are such pathetic losers that they get excited by the prospect of a sub-literate grifter with a combover “fighting for them.” These are society’s losers. And it’s a well-earned social rank.
