It is far too late for firing Rod Rosenstein to have any effect on Mueller's investigation.

Firing Rosenstein wouldn’t have any strategic objective.

It would be the act of a toddler throwing a temper tantrum because things aren’t going his way.

Trump’s tweets this morning about Dr. Ford should tell you Kav is all but toast.  He needs to lash out somehow and create a bigger distraction while delivering a win to his mouth breather base.

Its a trap.  And dotard won’t be able to resist.

Not sure about that.  There are two elements involved in DOTARD's decisionmaking.

1 -- is it childish/impetuous?  Then it's a YES!  But....

2 -- wait....does it take balls/any courage at all?  Then NO.

He does impetuous stuff all the time, without hesitation....but only when it requires exactly ZERO courage to make the decision and deal with the storm that follows.  The only force in the universe greater than DOTARD's childishness is his cowardice.

Thus, I've come to think that he will not fire Rosenstein.

You’re right - he will fire him but someone else will deliver the news, while he hides in the bathroom delivering childish tweets.

Who the hell is left for Mueller to flip? No one.

He already knows everything, so do other prosecutors.

Trump can fire Sessions, Mueller, and Rosenstein but none of that will prevent the truth from coming out when Mueller is called to testify before Congress and brief the American people.

They’ve been baking this fire Rosenstein cake for almost a year.

But I’m with Brisket, Trump doesn’t have the balls.

Yeah, I think firing him will precipitate some news stories that he doesn't want out there just yet.  Discrediting Rosenstein with the Fox News mouthbreathers and leaving in place seems to work more toward his goal of discrediting the investigation.

Explain.

Hypothetically. Trump's long game here is to fire Rosenstein and Session and appoint a more trump friendly, unrecused partisan as AG, a Linsey Graham if you will. With the hopes that the new AG with shut down the "witch hunt".

What DD meant, I'm assuming, is that IF that happened, big if, then all of Muellers files on the case wouldn't just go away, they would be transferred back to the FBI and the FBI would follow the leads. You can't just shut down the investigation, only transfer the "boss". We'd go from Mueller to Wray if Trump goes Saturday night massacre. Assuming Mueller already has the vast majority of evidence assembled, the FBI would finish the job. There is no hiding what's already been found by firings, if there is a crime, it's coming out, only wild card is who will be standing behind the podium announcing the charges.

Given how much he shit all over the FBI, I’m guessing they will be pretty enthusiastic about investigating him.

I am really starting to believe the op/ed was a plant. The author didn't say anything negative about Trump that wasn't already out there.  What was new/shocking was the revelation of a collective within the government working to actively subvert the President.  A deep-state by any other name.  This revelation was laced with trigger words and phrases for the Trump base like 'resistance' and 'deep state' and fits the narrative of Trump being victimized by those that don't want to see him MAGA.  And Trump has only very tepidly attempted to discredit the op/ed's validity or control perception in its wake.  Contrast that to how he has rallied people to attack the assertions of Woodward's book.  His MO is to attack, deny and discredit vehemently until he has no other option.  But not so much here.

The more I consider the op/ed, the more a question keeps popping up in my head:  If the President is such a danger to America that you as a senior staff member would work behind the scenes to thwart his intentions, why on earth would you publicize that?  Putting the governmental 'resistance' into the spotlight only alerts and embarrasses the President to act.  It makes you or others working similarly more likely to be discovered and replaced by someone supportive of the President.  It makes your efforts to protect America much less likely to succeed.  So why do it?  I can't think of any good, logical answer for that.

I believe it more likely that the op/ed was carefully crafted for some other purpose and planted with the NYT by someone who could plausibly have authored it.  The question then becomes what could the op/ed's other purpose of be?  Lets return to the big reveal of the piece.  Who could benefit from the belief that there is a real, no-shit shadow-state in the government that is working against the President, sabotaging his efforts to lead and effectively undermining his election?

Donald J Trump

If that shadow-state is real, or enough people believe it to be so, then he would be justified in dismantling it.  Expect to see that notion reinforced and acted upon at some point.  Expect it be used as the basis for Trump to carry out a political purge.  Expect it to be used to target people like Sessions, Rosenstein and anyone else who doesn't completely kowtow to Trump's authority.  Expect it to be used in an attempt to end Mueller's investigation.

That scenario is at least logical.  Diabolical, but logical.

Going to bump this back up in light of the new bombshell from the NYT and the clamor from the right to fire Rosenstein.  Anyone want to get on the purge bandwagon yet?

That op/ed was most certainly a purposeful strategy by the GOP.  I said the same at the time.  It was intended to send a message to Trump doubters among the GOP voters that there’s no reason to worry. The adults are in control.

Oh, the 25th Amendment?  Yeah, we thought about that.  We thought about it real hard.  And we decided against it.

But don’t worry!  We have everything under control.  There’s no need to do anything rash, like vote for Democrats.  We are stealing papers off the president’s desk to make sure that he sticks to the conservative agenda you voted for.  Oh yeah and to protect America from annihilation too. Yeah, yeah.  Of course.  But mainly: conservative agenda.

Now I have to go back to being real sneaky and not getting caught “betraying” the president, which is a VERY SERIOUS THING TO DO and something Trump surely won’t completely drop in a couple days.  Because this totally isn’t staged or fake or any of that.  And he totally really doesn’t know I’m doing any of this sneaky stuff I’m going to publicly reveal.

Pinky swear!

What really gets me about all the anti-Hillary people is she is basically Margaret Thatcher reincarnated.  Pretty much a female Ronald Reagan, but... derp derp derp.... she's a fucking commie, socialist, sumthin' sumthin' Rush and Hannity sumthin sumthin, said jackass with a (D) 'round her name.

You both sides mother fuckers own this shit we're in today.  Fuck all of you.

That's fucking awesome.  Can you condense it to 280 characters so the dumbasses will receive it?

Yep this has got to be exactly it. Have we even heard about the search for the author recently? I mean it honestly feels like that’s was a year ago.

Because dotard is too chicken shit to host a White House Correspondents Dinner two years running, I went back and watched Obama's last one.  The last five minutes are pretty much a tell to the press that shit's going down and you fuckers need to expose it.  They sit there and clap and high five each other and do absolutely nothing about it.  Fuck them too.

No.  And you won’t, because this whole thing was a ruse.

Can we all agree that Trump would view the behaviors described in the op/ed as a personal betrayal?

And can we agree that Trump responds to personal betrayals violently and relentlessly?  And that he holds grudges long past their expiration date?

So why did Trump basically drop this embarrassing personal betrayal after virtually zero bitching?  He seems to have completely forgotten about the fact that a close advisor made him look like a punk to the entire world, on the pages of the hated NY Times.  And yet when Rosie O’Donnell called him a dumbass or whatever, he brought that up every time he was handed a microphone for like 5 years.

This whole op/ed thing makes no sense unless Trump knew about it and approved it.

That explanation makes no sense to me.  What does Ivanka have to gain from going behind her dad’s back and throwing him under the bus?

She feels guilty and she hates her father.  No coincidence the op-ed came out just after she attended the McCain funeral.  Read it again and imagine it coming from Jared and Ivanka point of view.

The article didn’t throw Trump under the bus completely,  it celebrated his achievements too.

Also, the only person(s) that would put something like that out would be someone knowing they would suffer no consequences if their identity was revealed.

It plays to me as a Dem leak. I think there is enough evidence in hand to close this out if need be so they want to put pressure on Trump ahead of the midterms. Either Trump is attacked and looks weak cause he does nothing or he obstructs justice. Win/win and it will dominate the news cycle up to the elections. I think Hannity is freaking out cause he knows Trump is going to walk right into a trap.

I'm also curious what happens if Mueller just turns in a report without huge public interest (like not revolving around other scandals)? Would Sessions try to hide aspects? I think it would be harder to play politics with the report if the President takes a major step in obstruction, publicly.
