jokic with his 35th career triple double…achieved before the end of the third quarter. 29 pts, 13 reb, 10 ast so far on 12/20 FG. nuggets currently up 90-83 after trailing by double digits in the 3Q and playing without jamaal murray. ho hum.
They were down 20 at one point. Won by 18.

Might have been Dan Patrick Show a few weeks ago, but they were talking about how athletic/ imposing some of the elite players are, and then said Jokic looks like an oversized bartender that kicks everyone’s ass on the court.  It’s amazing how he continually makes plays/ creates shots with his body type.

For as brilliant and fun to watch of a player he is…

His palms to the sky whining gets old. If he misses a shot he’s fouled, if he turns it over he was fouled. He’s also hasn’t committed a foul at all this season, just ask him

well he is 33rd in the NBA in FTA/GM, so he probably is getting fouled more than what’s getting called. Embiid and Giannis are at 9.67 fta/gm. jokic is at 4.88. seems pretty damn low.

Just ask him, of course he’s getting fouled

He gets beat to shit every fucking night.  He scores over 29 ppg, primarily in the paint, and only shoots 5.4 free throws per game.  Look at how much other stars get to the line.  Giannis is over 9.  Embiid is over 9.  Luka is 8.3.  Dame is 10.  Bam is 8.1.  Fucking Gobert goes to the line more than Jok does (6.4)

I agree the acting can be a bit much, but that dude gets abused every fucking game.  Just look at his arms after a game.  Looks like he tried to wrestle a puma most nights.

Nobody wants to say this but could this guy be better than Hakeem?

At some aspects of the game? Absolutely... He is orders of magnitude better as a passer. Offensively they are probably on even footing with the nod to Jokic at being a better facilitator. But defensively? C'mon man

Also look at Olajuwon's competition... Kareem, Ewing, Robinson, & Shaq. Center in today's NBA is mostly a wasteland outside of Jokic and now maybe Wemby but we will see how long he stays healthy

Defensively, sure, but that was also how the game was played then.

Even footing on offense? Not really - but again, the game now demands different skills.

Jokic still has post moves, but also hits 35+ from three while distributing and seeing the floor better than most point guards.

But more to the point it's a completely different sport and position. This is the pointless comparison debate.

7 footers are not just camping in the paint waiting for an entry pass and the high percentage shot inside. Modern centers have to do way more or they can be a liability in the way the game is played now.

You cant compare them. Obviously Hakeem has the edge defensively. But the modern NBA is all about quick offense and shooting shots early in the shot clock. Faster pace, more possessions, more chances to get stats. You just cant compare that with the guys that played at the grind it down, limited possessions pace of the 90s.

he finishes with 26 pts, 18 ast, and 16 reb, the first such game in nba history.

Do you remember what was unique about this stat line?  I ask because luka put up a similar one yesterday and it was said he and Oscar were the only two to have done that. Wondering what the differentiator is.

i believe it was simply the first TD with a minimum of 26 pts, 18 ast, 16 reb.

edit: i’m guessing that luka and oscar are the only guys with 30+, 18 ast, and 15 reb.

He's not the most athletic guy out there, obviously, but he's not some dad bod guy.  He's a solid 285-290 and does not get pushed around by anyone in the league.  Early in his career, he was not solid.

9-32 last night?!

First time since 2021 that he had 2 games in a row shooting under 40%.  It was surreal to watch because a lot of them were close in and he was just missing.  He bounced back with 70% shooting (9 for 13) last night.

Yea. Modern era I might take Shaq over him it nobody else including Hakeem

Why not both? Put shaq in the low block and Joker at the free throw line and it would be unstoppable.

The Athletic has an article putting him in the 2nd mvp tier with Shai and Embiid in tier 1. Pretty much the justification was “he is just on cruise control” and the team “isn’t playing that great”

Checks notes:

26/12/9 on 56/35/82

Denver 25-12
OKC 23-11 -0.5
Philly 23-11 -0.5

Nobody wants to give him a 3rd MVP unless his case is so strong they have to.

Eh, that was last year before he had a ring. I thought he had absolutely no chance at 3 in a row unless he did something truly incredible on a 1 seed. So he went out and averaged a triple-double (well, 0.2 assists away from it) on 63%(!!!) shooting on a 1 seed, and they still didn't give it to him.

Now that he has a ring, there won't be any bullshit stigma around him having 3 MVPs. I imagine more than a few voters regret their rationale last season and may lean his way as a make-up.

Though, he has reached LeBron territory of "Ho-hum, just another 26, 12, 9 season on super efficient shooting leading the Finals favorite in his conference. Boring" That attitude makes him susceptible to the Derrick Roses of the world sneaking in.
