Coworker's sister had to evacuate by sailboat and took 4 families with them the other day. Their home is gone completely.

Awful.

We are fine. I assume those sleeping in the airport were unable to find a hotel. We've been in an Airbnb in Kihei the past two nights. The host worked with me, very compassionate. Family is on a noon flight, I am on a 2 pm. Not expecting any hiccups but who knows. The resort says they will pack up our things and ship them to us at no cost when it is safe to go back and they have power. Got some cash for my wife and I was able to add my Amex on her phone to Google Pay.

You're rolling with the flow, man.  Good on ya.  Good learning experience for your kids in adaptability, resilience, and compassion.  Glad y'all are all safe.

Update bc I'm sitting in a parking lot on the highway back into town. They are letting residents and hotel guests with reservations back into town you retrieve their things starting at noon. Family is on their flight Phoenix bound. Sw rebooked me at 4 but I'm not going to make it I don't think. The adventures continue. I hate to be a burden on these folks but I think getting our shit myself is probably less of one than having to have someone box everything up and ship it.

Holy fuckballs. New fire in Ka'anapali across from Honua Kai and the Westin properties. People being evacuated. Reading it's 80% contained. Good God can they please catch a break?

Headed there in July. The Southwest tickets were too cheap to pass on.

Looking at Airbnb’s with a beach access and view. Kihue and north Lahaina seem the most reasonable. Going with two active kids, so will do a lot of hiking, snorkeling, and maybe some easy surfing.

Help!

Stayed in Kihei, no beach view but literally 100 yards from doorstep to sand. Really enjoyed the area, convenient and good beach setup.

If you stay in Kaanapali, or Napili or Kapalua, you are going to have to drive on the bypass overlooking Lahaina every time you do an excursion away from where you are staying. That is pretty depressing, at least to me. The Honoapilani Highway that goes around the North end of the island is not really navigable as a way to travel to Kahului and other parts of the island. I would look at Kihei and Wailea personally.

Damn, it's almost been a year and that area is still fucked up.

I'll see you there.  We're heading out July 13th.  In laws rented two condos north of Lahaina.

I always say that the first 2 nights out there. By day 3/4 I remember why I live in Kihei. Love it out there though.

The beaches are mostly better on the west side (other than Makena aka big beach which is my personal favorite). Kihei water is pretty mid (by Hawaii standards) unless the conditions are right. That said there are some great little ones down the street throughout Wailea/Makena.  If you haven’t been before and plan on exploring the entire island Kihei is much more central as a jumping off point.

snorkeling: Honolua bay or Ahihi are fucking primo

hiking: Waihee Ridge is great if you don’t want to go to Hana to hike. Otherwise Pipiwai out there.

Surfing: depends on experience but if in Kihei The Cove is right in town and where most of the lessons are. Guardrails or Thousand Peaks if a bit more experienced.

Second time here.  You are definitely disconnected here.  I think that may suit me.  But back to the big city today.

Is Paia Fish Market one of the better places to get fresh fish in Kihei?

Currently staying up north of Lahaina in a condo, beachfront, about a 10 minute drive from Lahaina.

Honolua Bay on the north side of Maui has some of the better snorkeling areas on this side of the island. The place can get pretty crowded and there’s no sand on the beach. It’s just rocky area with some branches that have fallen where you can sit. Not kid friendly for the young kids not able to snorkel yet.

Wife, 8 year old and I went to Kihei beaches at the beginning of the trip but it was too choppy/windy to snorkel. Great beaches down in Kihei for little kids and families who just want to bake in the sun. Haven’t ventured to many other beaches though.

Haleakala is currently closed due to wildfires that broke out last week. My wife and I did that about 10 years ago when we honeymooned here but we wanted to take the boy. I’ve done Hana before when I was a kid.

Lahaina is just a sad town right now. Apparently they’re making progress but there’s still burnt buildings standing. On the inland side of the highway, they have cleared the land and looks like they’ll start construction within the next few months hopefully.

Really enjoyed the trip. We’re leaving Sunday. Best part: didn’t pay for shit. Worst part: sister-in-laws were here. See Holiday thread for further info.

Boss Frogs was cheaper than Snorkel Bob's for us for gear.  We got food (fish, meat, etc.) from Costco in Kahului.

We had bad luck on our Hana day. Rained hard the whole we there, so we didn’t stop along the way and couldn’t really see much. Ate at a food truck in Hana. Went to the Venus Pools and the locals were freaking out because of the flash flood warnings, and implored us not to dive into the water with our kids. So we then went to the national park down the road and hiked the bamboo forest and down the the 7 sacred pools. Again, no swimming allowed because of flash flooding / water flow, which totally made sense.

Drive back was much better, but we had to haul ass to beat the sunset (did not want to drive the one lane switchbacks at night). Came home, drank a Maui IPA, cooked some fresh marlin, and passed out.

Looks just like Palisades Park in Santa Monica (LA, CA) overlooking the S.M. Bay.  👀

Also bumping this, because it appears that I will be headed to Maui next Sunday through Wednesday evening.

I have never been to Hawaii, but I am absolutely NOT going to a Luau. (I’m sure that they are as authentic as a tango show in Buenos Aires.)

No idea where I’m staying. My sister is bringing me along because I helped her out a couple of times this year and our birthdays are 2 days apart. She’s been before, so I will defer to her. Maybe I will rent a surfboard for a couple of hours at a crowded touristy beach that good surfers avoid. 🤷‍♂️
