Literally the next part of that statement is The defendant had his knee on Mr. Floyd's neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds in total. Two minutes and 53 seconds of this was after Mr. Floyd was non-responsive. Police are trained that this type of restraint with a subject in a prone position is inherently dangerous.

That doesn't read like good news for the cop to me

One would think....

You guys remember a different history than I do. Real change came as a result of the violence that met those protests. The water hoses, dogs attacking protesters, batons to the heads of protesters, and the murders of those protesters.  These images were on tv, night after night,  after night. That's what yielded the change. The VIOLENCE!!!

We remember the same history. You are just twisting it to fit your narrative. Laws were changed in the courtroom and Congress, not because we got tired of blasting protesters with water hoses. Your examples are bad because cops did that to black people, not the other way around. We are taking about violence committed by blacks, I.E. looting and destroying property. If we want to go down the rabbit hole, we can do so with Vietnam protestors of all races having the cops attack them.

The overwhelming majority of white people today do not supports racism. What social norm is trying to get changed and how is setting shit on fire and looting going to solve it? Now cops across America will get the message because Target, who had nothing to do with this, lost their stock of Nintendos? It seems counterproductive to the message that black people are not all criminals as they are being portrayed.

How do 4 cops represent police as a whole or show that America is more racist now than in 1960? Did the cops kill this guy because he was resisting arrest and they don’t want to be defied or because the victim was black? The cops are assholes. I personally believe that they treated the victim more harshly based on his skin color. I have a lack of evidence to show that he was murdered because he was black. Neither does anyone else.

It isn't just those 4 cops.

It's the notion that they didn't have to worry about repercussions for ending a (black) citizen's life.

Walk yourself through the mindset required to watch your co-worker crush the life out of someone...in handcuffs and not resisting.

Really? You literally said :

Maybe you meant something different, but if I diagram the sentence, you were equating the actors and the acts, not their motives. Now if the educational system failed you and you don't know how to write, that sucks. But that's what you wrote.

I wish you had bothered to diagram the sentence. You probably would've written something else, or maybe not bothered to respond at all.

"People using this incident as an excuse to steal and vandalize" is a noun phrase and is the subject of the sentence you quoted (and that I originally posted).

"is" is the verb. Third-person singular. Because it applies to the mentality represented by the noun phrase. If it applied to merely the actors or their actions, as you insist, I would've used third-person plural: are.

I also would've included an article, e.g., "The people using this incident as an excuse to steal and vandalize are no better than the cops using 'resistance' as an excuse to murder."

"cops using 'resistance' as an excuse to murder" is also a noun phrase.

So you're pretty clearly wrong here. Nevertheless, your thoughts on my education and writing ability are noted. I could say the same with respect to your ability to read or your understanding of grammar, but that would actually have merit, and why deal in facts when it's obviously more fun for people like you to condescend to strangers?

I like the military line of thinking and would go with, "If convicted of a felony, said officer rescinds any claim to current benefits or those in the future.  STFU, do not pass go, and go to jail."

I'm fine with piling on the financial hit, but I would much prefer to go after their liberty, especially if their conviction involves depriving others of theirs.

If you're a negligent supervisor, then you get fired with nothing due past that day and can never work in LE again.

Pollyannic, I know... but it's what i think it will take to change things.

I'd add something else: the military constantly removes senior officers from various commands when the leadership loses faith in their abilities.  Would like that applied to this situation - while Chauvin may have been the one kneeing his neck, there were three other officers doing nothing to stop him, or even assisting, which indicates an institutional problem.

Walk their superior(s) in and say "One of your officers murdered a man while three other officers assisted, either by holding the victim down or doing nothing to stop the murder.  That means you didn't do a good job of managing your officers, because 4 out of 4 officers on the scene were fine with this.  We are going to issue a press release and mention that.  Bye bye!  I hear the local gas station is hiring, hopefully you can explain your name being all over the Internet."

I also liked the former Dallas Police Chief (Brown?) who would fire officers for stuff other agencies wouldn't, and would publicly announce why.  We need that kind of openness, and a willing to go against the police unions.

I haven’t seen more than a handful of public posts siding with the cops. It’s pretty unanimous that they used excessive force and are all guilty of abusing their power to murder someone, intentionally or not. The victims race is the “sexy” factor in the story and is why we are even hearing about it. He did not deserve to die and I doubt you’d find many dissenting opinions on that.

February 1968, black sanitation workers in Memphis just refused to show up for work. That's how you do civil unrest for a just cause. The looting isn't doing anyone any favors.

Alternate take:  Here in 2020, something like that would just get them attacked on twitter/social media by all manner of various leaders, and the government will focus on replacing them/getting the garbage picked up, rather than dealing with the actual problem.

Looting and destroying is not the answer, but by the same token, remove the opportunists/anarchy types stealing and burning shit, and you'd still be left with a shitload of people in the streets who are truly angry and tired of the status quo.

Unfortunately it's far too easy for the opportunist/anarchy types to slip in unnoticed and take them up to 11.

I'm not supporting the looting/ mayhem.  I'm just saying I understand it.  I empathize with them.

Doesn't make it right.  What happened to George Floyd is light years from "right" too.  It's past time that society reacted to it.

Laws need to be  enhanced to address it.  Make it where these dumbasses don't feel like they have carte blanche with people's lives.

And who was hated by the rank and file for this. Any kind of change is met with anger by the police officers union. It's always "there's just one bad apple" and "back the blue" without any desire or openness to change the way they are policing. I'm just thankful body cams were made mandatory. With that and everyone having a cell phone camera, it makes incidents like these more open to the spotlight they deserve.

Quote

A former club owner in south Minneapolis says the now-fired police officer and the black man who died in his custody this week both worked security for her club up to the end of last year.

George Floyd and now-former Officer Derek Chauvin both worked security at the El Nuevo Rodeo club on Lake Street, according to Maya Santamaria. Santamaria owned the building for nearly two decades, but sold the venue within the last few months.

"Chauvin was our off-duty police for almost the entirety of the 17 years that we were open," Santamaria said. "They were working together at the same time, it's just that Chauvin worked outside and the security guards were inside.

Bets on the murder being the result of a personal beef from when they worked together? I'd say the odds are high.

That was hilarious how they all ran off

Yeah that was some weird shit, but looks like they left some tear gas in their wake.

Looks like cities across the country are going to be in fire tonight.

One bad apple ruins the whole fucking basket

+rep for being the first surl (as far as i recall) to notice that apples come in baskets, not in bunches.

EDIT: My Oma said way back, apples sometimes came in barrels, too. Never saw an apple barrel, me, but willing to believe.

The problem with the rioting/rebellion is that it is not being done where the power structure is. Marching on a police station, police hq, city hall, etc is how you actually get the changes needed. Looting a liquor or Target is bullshit. It does nothing to help the people already hurting. And just makes their lives that much harder.

Of course the power structure will just sit back and let them be. It’s not their neighborhood, businesses. And when it’s over, their agents can swoop in and the get the properties for nothing.

Yeah, that's interesting, if true.  If that comes out in trial, there's your first degree murder charge.

re: the CNN live feed...... what the fuck do all those folks using their cell phones think they are going to catch on video that CNN wont catch on video in their own building?

Im not talking about the folks on the other streets, im talking about the 20 or so masked folks sitting behind the dude with the skateboard breaking the glass taking videos

Why wasn't MCA in the posse?
No wonder he left the band

To soon?

He was not included because there was a lot of beers, lot of girls and a lot of cursin’

Can’t have a hot head like that in the posse especially when they only strapped with a .22 automatic on their person.

No, you need real G’s like Suzi with her submachine uzi and the ever defiant Kilo G.

That’s just how it goes.
