Motion to change the thread title, as it is inaccurate.

He went TO a church. And he's going to more today. So it's accurate enough. And ironically hilarious in it's own way. But if you want to change it to "Iconoclast Texan is a Hateful Islamic Fundamentalist" I can certainly see the humor in that as well.

Trump posing in front of an Episcopalian church and Catholic shrine for photo ops while the clergy keep telling him to GTFO. He really doesn't seem to understand how this whole thing works.

His base considers these sects to be fake Christians and he needs to head to Dallas to hang out in front of an American Jesus church with Jeffress. If his staff doesn't understand this then the general rule of thumb should be avoid any church with Social Justice doctrines.

Nowadays, Episcopalians are seen as folks who think NPR makes the pulse race. But if you think 5 seconds about how the Anglican church came into being, there is nothing more fitting than having an amoral despot with multiple wives send in the gendarmerie with shot and pike to clear the peasantry out of the way of his stroll.

It wasn't a selfie.  I doubt Trump knows how to take a selfie.  Judging by how he held the bible he'd definitely turn the phone the wrong way.

"Mr. Pope! I'm going to marry my first wife, and then I'm going to divorce her. Now, I know what you're going to say but stick with me, my story gets better. I'm going to marry my second wife and then I'm gong to kill her, cut her head off! Ah, not expecting that, are ya? Third wife, gonna shoot her. Fourth wife, put her into a bag. Fifth wife, into outer space. Sixth wife, on a Rotissimat. Seventh wife, made out of jam. Eighth wife…”

And the Pope's going, "You crazy bugger! You can't do all this! What are you, a Mormon? You can't marry all these people! It's illegal! You can't do all this! I am the Pope, I am the head of the Church, I have to keep up… ciao! I have to keep up standards. What have you been reading, the gospel according to St. Bastard?"

So Henry VIII, who was Sean Connery for this film, said:

"Well then, I will set up a new religion in this country. I will set up the Psychotic Bastard religion."

And an advisor said,

"Why not call it Church of England, Sire?"

"Church of England, actually. Much better... Even though I’m Scottish myself."

most white conservative Christians don’t want piety from this president; they want power. In Trump, they see a champion who will restore them to their rightful place at the center of American life, while using his terrible swift sword to punish their enemies.

Here we go.  I went back through some old pics.  Just over a year ago, I took the photo below.

We woke early that morning (jet lag had messed with our schedule), and took a walk down quiet Berlin streets in the morning. After several blocks, we came to an open gate into a beautiful garden. As we entered, we realized that it was a cemetery in the heart of the City. It was so quiet -- the whole city was. We saw gravestones chipped from the gunfire they took during the Battle of Berlin in April of 1945. Granite stones make good cover for a scared soldier. As we reached the back of the cemetery, we came across this. A simple stone, off an ordinary street, for an exceptional man. He wrote on the literal Cost of Discipleship. And he died for it.

His words:

Quote
“We are not to simply bandage the wounds of victims beneath the wheels of injustice, we are to drive a spoke into the wheel itself.”

“The Church is the Church only when it exists for others…not dominating, but helping and serving. It must tell men of every calling what it means to live for Christ, to exist for others.”

I stand with Bonhoeffer.  I am very comfortable with that stand.

the way he displays that bible before he lifts it up to his shoulder is like a price is right model displaying the new combination microwave popcorn popper/avocado slicer/automatic cat food dispenser.  so weird.

let's not forget that the messiah was a foreigner who broke political prisoners out of babylon and inserted them back at the top of heap in judea, then pacified them by building them a temple.

You keep on finding ways to defend this.  First, you kept on implying these protestors were looting and rioting -- having not even watched any of it unfold.  Then you said even if they didn't, the previous nights were violent, so therefore it was fine to shoot at these peaceful protestors because the threat existed (okay, so I'm sure you agree that all cops are threats to kill innocent people, based on actions of these 4 -- and countless other examples).  Now you're taking police at their word that they gave repeated warnings and ignore the fact that it was still 30 minutes before the curfew.  Why were they shot and driven back by horses before the curfew?  All so the president could get an awkward photo op to try to grow his base of supporters, that's why.  There was zero reason why the president had to give a speech outside or walk over to the church.  Zero.  Give the speech inside and take photos somewhere else.

Actually, Trump  doesn't walk with Christ and he's not repentant.  So maybe he shouldn't be in a church.

“A few hours after the dystopian spectacle, I spoke on the phone with Robert Jeffress, a Dallas megachurch pastor and indefatigable Trump ally. He sounded almost gleeful.

“I thought it was completely appropriate for the president to stand in front of that church,” Jeffress told me. “And by holding up the Bible, he was showing us that it teaches that, yes, God hates racism, it’s despicable—but God also hates lawlessness.”

I do not have the power to send anyone to heaven or hell, but man that guy doesn’t deserve anything good in the afterlife for saying things like that while professing to be a man of God. Evangelicals are a completely worthless stain on society.

Or is it the methods used to disburse which were non-lethal.

Disperse. The word you're looking for is"disperse."  People are not disbursed. They are dispersed. And people legally and peacefully occupying a public space should never be dispersed by force,  non-lethal or otherwise. What a high bar is now the norm: no one was killed so the dotard could have a photo op, so it's all good.

I don't give a rat's ass what he believes, he's not a Christian.  A white nationalist?  Okay but not a Christian.

“I am not surprised but disappointed in the Bishop of DC's comments. “

I am not surprised and I am very grateful as an Episcopalian for The Bishop’s comments.

“It is what I have come to expect from our church leadership.”

Yes. I expect our church leadership to stand strong against all types of hypocrisy.

“At least our Presiding Bishop was less inflammatory in his denunciation.”

I doubt you would support our Presiding Bishop with his ratifying signature on the document  “A Confession of Faith in a Time of Crisis”.  I encourage you to look it up.

”It would be nice if the Episcopal Church leadership would realize that being partisan has driven away lots of people from our church.”

I do not personally know of a single member in my parish who has left because of partisan  politics since we lost many members due to our acceptance of LGBTQ individuals.

”I stick around because I love the liturgy and don't want my faith to be comfortable to me.”

I love the liturgy and music but that is not why I “stick” around. I love how our church strives to lovingly serve all its members and our community.  I stick around because our tiny church does such things as serving meals to over 300 deserving individuals (up from under 100 just a few weeks ago).

“I want to have my beliefs challenged and my heart softened and changed.  I have to battle my biases, upbringing and sick mind.”

I am grateful for my upbringing.  I also seek grace and guidance from my many weaknesses.

I think that the church sign out front should just post "Psalm 109" and leave it up there.

That's some real Old Testament shit right there.  Highlighted portions for this regime in particular.

You know this was prayed fervently about Obama? Trying to remember which Senator it was that retweeted it.

I've seen FB posts on it.

Yes, the same people that demand we as a nation pray for this President were praying for the last one's demise.

I see Jeffress was happy to comment. Falwell's place is just down the road. He'll be a lot more receptive than the protesters in downtown Dallas.

Earlier today I saw an interaction on social media between some Christians and one white Evangelical women explained how blacks are not oppressed because Candice Owens says so. Then a bunch of others agreed. I don't even know how to confront something like that.

I know that Icano can't see this, but this is for anyone that agrees with him (or him, if he's using a sock, which I assume he is). This is from the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, you know, the one black guy y'all claim to respect:

"In deep disappointment I have wept over the laxity of the church. But be assured that my tears have been tears of love. There can be no deep disappointment where there is not deep love. Yes, I love the church. How could I do otherwise? I am in the rather unique position of being the son, the grandson and the great grandson of preachers. Yes, I see the church as the body of Christ. But, oh! How we have blemished and scarred that body through social neglect and through fear of being nonconformists.

There was a time when the church was very powerful--in the time when the early Christians rejoiced at being deemed worthy to suffer for what they believed. In those days the church was not merely a thermometer that recorded the ideas and principles of popular opinion; it was a thermostat that transformed the mores of society. Whenever the early Christians entered a town, the people in power became disturbed and immediately sought to convict the Christians for being "disturbers of the peace" and "outside agitators."' But the Christians pressed on, in the conviction that they were "a colony of heaven," called to obey God rather than man. Small in number, they were big in commitment. They were too God-intoxicated to be "astronomically intimidated." By their effort and example they brought an end to such ancient evils as infanticide and gladiatorial contests. Things are different now. So often the contemporary church is a weak, ineffectual voice with an uncertain sound. So often it is an archdefender of the status quo. Far from being disturbed by the presence of the church, the power structure of the average community is consoled by the church's silent--and often even vocal--sanction of things as they are.

But the judgment of God is upon the church as never before. If today's church does not recapture the sacrificial spirit of the early church, it will lose its authenticity, forfeit the loyalty of millions, and be dismissed as an irrelevant social club with no meaning for the twentieth century. Every day I meet young people whose disappointment with the church has turned into outright disgust."

I know it's tiresome, but every day you can just marvel, "What would white evangelicals say if Obama had __________?"

You can finish that sentence in thousands of ways.  "...paid off a pornstar after cheating on his third wife who was home with their baby?"  "...been caught on a hot mic bragging about grabbing women's pussies?"  "...welcomed and cooperated with Russian efforts to subvert an American election?"

In today's episode, let's ask, "What would white evangelicals say if Obama had publicly rejected the foundational New Testament idea of repentance and redemption?"

I think it's fair to say that there would have been an attempt on Obama's life if he did one tenth of what this madman has said and done. I go through these "what if" scenarios in my head all the time, but I always go back to the comment about McCain and how the differently the Right would have reacted if Obama had said that about a POW. I still cannot believe bone spurs survived that.

White nationalists wrapped in the flag, carrying a cross.  There's not one goddamned Christian aspect of evangelical Christians.  They're fucking evil racists. They give lip service to forgiveness and redemption but that's it; they don't walk the walk.

What I wouldn't give to have been a fly on the wall during the walk-n-talk from the West Wing to Saint JOhn's Church where his staff tried to force feed 2000 years of Christian Church etiquette to Trump.

The last statement being, "Sir, when we get there...it's customary to give deference, and not make it about you.  Shit."
