we are a board of Longhorns, wrong description as usual for you who like to constantly put people into categories

if we are going down that road, you clearly have shown yourself to be a puppet though...

as for the actual topic at hand, glad to live in an America where Brennan, or Black Lives Matters, is free to take whatever stand, in whatever method he chooses

You people who think BLM is about black lives, then you are living in a liberal bubble.

BLM ONLY cares about black lives that are killed by police. BLM only leaves destruction wherever they go and make the black community WORSE.  Baltimore is worse now than before. Police backed off and blacks killed blacks at a higher rate than before and that is a town ran by black democrats.

If Ferguson or Chicago any better?  If you (or any of the athletes) believe this is a good thing, then YOU are part of the problem

Well, thank you for showing up here and setting us straight.

I quoted a source, that actually reflects the source data. you quote a source, that doesn't reflect source data. makes complete sense.

its not like Blacks Lives Matters has a history of police enforcement abuse against blacks that they can point too...right?

In 1926 an estimated 45% of all persons admitted to State prisons in the South were black, compared to 18% in North Central, 14% Northeast, and 5% in the West

and that leaning towards the incarceration of blacks has never gone away...

I dont know that situation and it is sad regardless, however, context is EVERYTHING.  Michael Brown didnt have a weapon either and was justly shot and, as a result, look at what BLM did to Ferguson, Mo.  Is Ferguson better off now?  of course not.

Good character guys often come with above average intelligence, as befitting the University of Texas. It's no surprise current and former Longhorn players are prominently engaged in the national conversation.

I'm good with Eagles. Let's make some needed changes and do our best to make them both positive and lasting.

I have zero interest in engaging the troll, but I do think it is a remarkably interesting turning point in the American experience that so many conservatives are expressing anger and disgust with abuses of police power over the last several days, whether he recognizes it or not. Lindsey Graham's comments about the work his Senate committee is about to undertake are apparently liberal folderol. Go figure.

Anyway, yeah, anyone deriding Eagles for taking a stand is kind of missing the whole point of declaring independence from England. Right or wrong on the issue at hand, Eagles is continuing one of this country's best traditions. Good for him. Hope it works out like he wants it to do.

This.

But I don't think it will work out the way he wants without the platform. I have a hard time imagining we will keep him on scholarship to not play - if only because we can't do that for all the players who would want to follow suit (and you better believe the dominoes will fall). There have got to be alternatives where his voice will actually be amplified rather than snuffed out as he falls into obscurity for his remaining time at Texas.

The players should look at Acho right now - he's a pretty big voice out there now and without football he would never have gotten there. He's a great model for these guys to follow.

You thought we got scorched for firing Charlie?

It'll be ninth circle levels of fire if we revoked his scholly for speaking up about systemic racism and exploitation of young black men.

Pretty much. Just look at Skip Bayless. I guess that's one area of progress towards racial equality: black sports commentators are expected to be just as obnoxious and unlikable as their white counterparts.

America has to do better...

The news reports on this read a little differently:

FORT WORTH -- A 31-year-old man fatally shot by police early Friday after officials say he swung a metal rod at officers has been identified as Joey Ellis. The shooting occurred shortly after 3 a.m. after officers were called to a disturbance at the Great Western Inn in the 1800 block of Lancaster Avenue. There, police said, Ellis told officers he had broken windows to several vehicles because the manager would not give him a room for free. Ellis was being escorted to a patrol car for further investigation when he broke free and attempted to run, said Lt. Abdul Pridgen, police spokesman. Pridgen said officers attempted to subdue Ellis using a Taser and a baton, but the man continued to resist arrest, picking up a cinder block as if he was going to hurl it one officer and later trying to remove an officer's gun from its holster. Pridgen said the man had picked up a metal rod and was swinging it in a threatening manner at the officers when he was shot by officers E. Pate, 34, and M.E. Anderson, 26.

Not sure what the final report was...still, wonder why they never seem to get shot in the leg to get them down.

He does have some dumbass takes on sports... but he's doing a great job with the present movement, and his platform and sphere's of influence have exploded.

We'd never do that to one player.

What if 10 do it though? 30? Every player?  I'm glad I don't have to make those kind of decisions!

All races kill there own because it usually happens over confritation of your surroundings. And I can assure you those blacks killing blacks are going to jail for murder. Everyone is upset because cops kill and get paid leave or fired to go work in another PD. You are part of the problem.

I still don't get how people are oblivious to this. When a black citizen kills another, they go to prison. When a white cop kills a black man, nothing happens for the most part on any consistent basis. I am not sure how accurate this is but someone posted that Michael Vick did more time for dog fighting than cops did time for the last 493 killings of unarmed black men. That is the issue they have. Cops are above the law when it comes to this so damn right they are going to be mad.

I would hope they could work out a deal on the educational side to allow him to pursue his studies while not consuming the football scholarship that he now appears to find oppressive.

I am fine with him wanting to take a stand and fully support it, but to feel like you get to take your stand and not face a single repercussion from it is not realistic. He took the scholarship knowing full well what it entailed. It is 100% within his right to change his mind and walk away from it. It is not OK to get to play both sides and take the benefits without upholding his own end of the bargain. That would be akin to taking a stand against the company you work for by shooting the double birds at your boss and walking out the door and still expecting your paycheck next Friday.

To take it further, what if 25 of his teammates all decided to take the same stand? Would the expectation be that the UT football team would have to eat 25 schollys?

Would any other Blueblood program in the Country do the same?

Consider this - Texas Football is a platform for many young men, including Eagles. If Eagles decides not to play, I'd support him keeping his scholarship this year and assist him in any way possible to make sure his voice is heard. A single action like this would not degrade the platform (whether he will have a big enough platform to make a difference is another conversation). The platform would be degraded, however,  if the entire team decides not to play. Then you don't have Texas football nor the platform that is Texas football and what comes after. Maybe it would be worth it to them to halt football for a year while they sit out to get a message across. Will this advance the message enough to matter? I don't know - but if they harm their platform, it may not be worth it in the long run. He needs to play the long game, although I recognize there is some value in striking while the iron is hot.

I get why he wants to sit out but might have a bigger voice if he stays in the spotlight. Most folks outside of Austin don't really know him like they do a Collin Kaepernick.

Feels like the more impactful thing to do would be to stay on the team, score a TD against OU or LSU, and then take a knee in the endzone in support of the movement.

A lot of pandering to black athletes

How many black people were killed by police in 2019? around 10 out of millions of interactions?  and, of that 5 were killed by black police officers.

yeah, huge problem! smh.  Does that justify at least 6 deaths by protesters in just the past couple of weeks, including several police officers.

You really suck at numbers.

Eagles is perfectly within his rights to protest, and I support him fully for doing so. If his protest takes the form of refusing to participate in some - or all - football activities, then he is likely in violation of some provisions of his agreement with UT, and his football scholarship could - and should - be terminated in an appropriate manner. I would also agree that #MensaTom and others in the AD ought to assist him with his educational endeavors, if he chooses to stay in school.

And... I agree with the perception that his best course is to continue his athletic career and doing his utmost to excel, while pursuing his political aims as well.

agree... It sounds great and wonderfully politically correct to support BLM.  BLM has been taken over by terrorist, Marxist, and anarchist such as the black panthers.

You need to research Fred Hampton. The good he was doing being a voice and uniting whites, blacks, and Latinos.

Who were the terrorists in that story? The white establishment and police.

People say "why are there so few or no positive black leaders"? Well because the ones that started making a difference were immediately killed by the white establishment.

King. X. Hampton. After a while all you get is the Jesse Jackson's and Al Sharptons that talk loud but know never to really press the establishment for change.

Gotta say, if me and a buddy are both holding pistols and the best the other guy can come up with is a metal bar or a cinder block, I bet I can get him to drop said block / bar without unloading a full clip into his body.

I don't think many people care whether they are watching a black man, white man, mexican or samoan play football. If a person feels like he is being exploited, he should quit. I am sure someone else is willing to take his spot. And I will enjoy watching whoever it is play the sport of football. Generally, I may even like it better watching guys play for the love of the game rather than for what it will get them. Maybe I am jaded, but I don't think most high football players play because of the potential for big bucks and I enjoy watching those games as much or more than skilled college or pro guys.
