Seattle’s Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone

Hugo Stiglitz

Recommended Posts

My brother stopped by yesterday and said, “DO YOU SEE WHAT IS GOING ON IN SEATTLE?”

“Uh no, not really, other than having an autonomous zone free of police interference.”

”But isn’t that like a rebellion or something?!”

”Un no, it’s just a space without fucking thugs tear gassing people. Good talk Rusty.”

Really, this has provided me tremendous amusement, sponsored by your friends at "BOTH SIDES" (promotional consideration provided by Anastasis).

Do I get to laugh at hippies freaking out about not having enough vegan snacks, and not being able to create and sustain a functional plan?  Yep.

Do I get to laugh at the Fox News crowd, clutching their pearls about the end of America because....a bunch of hippies have an area of town where they're eating a lot of soy hot dogs and playing drum circles?  Yep.

Does any of this make a shit?  Nope.

So, I get to laugh with a clear conscience.

I figure that the whole thing eventually will go to shit because nazis start attacking them or the cops start assassinating them, but until then it’s mostly just entertainment and possibly even a little interesting.

Oh, there are only two possible outcomes -- failure that comes from within, or failure that comes from outside.  POSSIBLY a blend of the two.  But until then, yeah, just mildly interesting and entertaining.

City could stop this really quickly if they so chose. Turn off water and power to that area, as well as any other services (trash pickup etc)

This is a non-news story and Trump (as always) is showing his ass. If the city of Seattle really felt this was anything more than performance art to a large degree then they would be in there removing these folks.

This seems to be a benign protest thus far. Hell the mayor is saying it could turn into a "summer of love"

The police were ejected and there is peace and harmony. That is the ENTIRE lesson.

The handwringing about their failure to immediately form an organized city-state is propaganda.

Well, I'm still gonna make fun of them for the plaintive call for vegan snacks.  I get to do that, because this is still America, and making fun of whiny vegans will always be okay.

Well this is like the first time you and I have ever agreed. If you wanna come over and watch the news coverage of CHAZ, you and your family are more than welcome.

What I love is how much more GR is concerned about this than this statement, which is also true:

"In areas controlled by police, the police have assaulted and/or murdered unarmed citizens on camera, and regularly get away with it.  In fact, they do so to black people at a higher rate, and there are known white supremacists in their ranks."  I mean, that's fucking engraved in stone, and we've been okay with it for DECADES, but sure.....this hippie revolt over a few blocks is the REAL crisis in America.

It would be laughable if it wasn't so predictable and ultimately destructive to the very social fabric and social contract that GR pretends to be concerned about.

Random thought: If this escalates and more national folks comment, it’ll be real interesting to see the partisan comparison between Bundy/BLM occupation and BLM/CHAZ occupation.

#bothsides #LAW AND ORDER!

Both groups declared autonomy and denounced public authority. Both groups almost immediately asked for outside assistance.

CHAZ isn't an armed standoff. They aren't dying or begging for things. They are a collective of local citizens who are occupying a public space peacefully and participating in community activities.

This is a great opportunity to turn off your pundit brain (which is useless and almost always wrong anyway) and just be on a side (which can actually be good and helpful).

The eagerness to compare this to Bundy to try and own the Republicans is disturbing. Stop it.

Hi from Seattle. Been to CHAZ with one of my students. It's chill (still overpriced as hell, though).

Good article here:

  • Seattle = American settler capitalism on steroids
  • Durkan is a pro-business, anti-activist mayor
  • Seattle’s distrust of the police runs deep
  • Distrust of police has recently intensified
  • The Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone is, by and large, a supremely peaceful endeavor

Yes to arms. Don’t know about any standoff or confrontation on trying to keep SPD out.

“On the ground Thursday, the scene was a mix of demonstration and street fair, The Post reported. The John Brown Gun Club, which provides armed community defense during social justice events, was on site but with no weapons visible. One person, who was not a member of the club, was seen with a long gun; while Washington is an open-carry state, Durkan has banned weapons in the city since a May 30 emergency order.”

Oh no doubt brain is fully off and popcorns out watching this part of the 2020 simulation as I WFH.

But at the risk of engaging you, the comparisons are there for all see. Group seizing public property. Group denouncing the authority of LEO. Group declaring first amendment protest.

That PD precinct and streets and lawn they’re growing their vegetables in doesn’t belong exclusively to the CHAZians, just as federal grazing lands and the wildlife refuge didn’t belong exclusively to the Bundys.

Are you not entertained? .gif

Yeah, I'm not sure where B_T is coming from with that. Last night the stuff I saw was them painting the streets, setting up couches and watching movies. The narrative being pushed by people who will not be named on the network resembling a small woodland creature was a grim desolate wasteland of pot, porn, and pew pew guns ready to storm the burbs. So, yes, the comparisons are noted which is one reason I asked about guns, but what the folks are trying there is actually kind of amazing. I hope they can get their message out w/o anyone coming to harm.
