Fun fact, the United States has only once elected a sitting House Member to the Presidency.  That was James Garfield in 1880.  Curiously, he actually also won a Senate race that year as well, though he was never seated---ascending, rather, to the Oval Office.

Gaetz would be interested to know that somebody assassinated Garfield just a few months into his Presidency.

Gaetz will be happy to tell you that Garfield is very much alive and well, and up to his lasagna-loving, Monday-hating ways.

Or, once Trump finally admits he has no plans to run in 2024 and endorses Gaetz, the GOP will pivot and defend fucking teenage girls for cash as a jobs program that provides much needed relief to those that need it.

Actually, they'll just say they have no interest in Matt Gaetz' private life, what he does in his own bedroom is his own business.  And then they'll scream about Hillary supporting Bill after his affair.

Yeah, but Garfield served honorably on the field of battle in the Civil War and could write Greek with one hand and Latin with the other at the same fucking time.

Gaetz can probably slip a roofie in some chick's drink with one hand while sending dick pics to a HS school chick with the other.

This.  There's not much chance for the run of the mill Republican to look Old School righteous in front of their constituents.  It will come at Matt's expense and they will take it.

No, Bullneck has it right.  Republicans are very vicious in their primaries, and they will play the Holier Than Thou card.  Gaetz has teed it up for them with his public comments and actions, and unfortunately for him, he doesn't have the personality to overcome that like Trump did.  Just ask Roy Moore.

Even if Gaetz made it to the general election, again, his lack of personality would hurt him - Butthead is not going to motivate people to get out and vote like Trump did.  BMDs are going to key in on that, and back other horses in the Republican primary.

Couple of thoughts:

 - Why would you let someone take a photo of you like this?  Especially if you're married and running for president,

 -  Having said that, she ain't bad looking

 -  She's well over 18

Two reasons:

1. Before internets.

2. It is, and has always been, undefeated.

I was reading the Gary Hart and then Donna Rice wiki pages. Interesting stuff.

The photo was taken while he was a senator but before he ran for president.  There is some suspicion that the photo was a set up by Lee Atwater.

How was it a set up?  Weren't Rice and Hart friends long before that boating excursion (multiple people place them as having met 1986 NYE party in Colorado---not strange since Hart was well connected with the rich and famous of Aspen), they went boating with some other friends awhile later, and somebody took a picture of them on the dock?  She was a 30 year old college graduate (Phi Beta Kappa) working in pharma and acting.  She wasn't some naive 21 year old 'dancer/spokesmodel' being passed around political circles by exploitative assholes.  She wanted to leverage her friendships to get more into politics, nothing sinister about that.  I don't get the grand conspiracy behind bringing down Hart.  They both made a mistake and paid too heavy a price for it.

Now, what happened with the photo becoming "viral" via tabloids, there were certainly operators behind that.  But nobody forced them to meet, become friends, and travel/photograph together.  There shouldn't be elected office penalties for befriending a person wanting to get into politics more, but Hart should have known better.  If not for his lapse in judgement, the world probably never knows the Clinton family.

I'm just repeating what I read:

Quote

A Miami Herald editor who participated in the paper's initial Hart scandal stories disputed the possibility of a conspiracy theory involving Lee Atwater as published in The Atlantic.[68]

And then we don’t get President Trump.

Wait a minute, so if I hop in a DeLorean and set it for January 1, 1986 and head to the NYE "Enchantment Under the Sea" dance and cockblock Hart from meeting Rice Peeloff then I can watch my photo of Monica's blue dress as the stain disappears as do all the MAGA insurrectionists from  my Jan 6 photos? Cool, challenge accepted!

None of that Maddow diatribe nor the article explains why Rice was there to begin with.  You can fuck with Bimini officials.  You can push the photo out to tabloids.  What you can't do is force Rice to get down there after she had already been friends with Hart for a marked period of time.  You can put Atwater behind all of it, even at his deathbed confession, but you can't explain how Atwater put them together at that Aspen home the year+ before.  Neither Maddow or Vanity Fair explains how Rice got in his sphere to begin with nor what inclined her to make that trip to the boat/Bahamas.  For that, you'll have to look to another Bush but Maddow doesn't have the horses for that.

The article says exactly why she was there.

The Atwood’s lackey confessed he brought the girls. Hart thought he was going to meet wealthy donors. And he specifically changed boats to have it all take place on the one named “Monkey Business”.

I saw that part.  I guess my question was how Atwater arranged for her to meet at the private Aspen home of a wealthy democrat?

If they hadn't become friends long before the boat trip, no way Gary takes that photo with a girl who just showed up to the docks.

Interesting coincidence...Baywatch goes into production exactly one year after she takes that photo in that swimsuit.

How do we know it wasn't Atwater, but David Hasselhoff, behind this whole Gary Hart thing?  I wouldn't put anything past that manipulative, drunken Kraut.

the odds of the fotomat destroying it, mis-cutting it, or simply losing it was about 50/50.

Damn, i am old.

To be fair to ol' Matt, I wouldn't notice the Twitter handle, either, if I were hopped up on cocaine and a half dozen nekkid teens.

Lee Harvey Oswald does have 4 grandkids - one of his daughters even worked here in Austin at the Texas Chili Parlor back in the 90s.

But yeah, Matt or his intern was not paying attention on twitter.

https://www.cnn.com/2021/06/03/politics/feds-investigating-obstruction-gaetz-probe/index.html

Quote

The Justice Department is investigating potential obstruction of justice connected to the ongoing probe of Rep. Matt Gaetz and his alleged sexual relationship with a minor.

According to two people familiar with the matter, federal investigators' concerns over efforts to obstruct the probe date back to at least last fall, when the examination of the Florida Republican was not yet public knowledge.

Quote

One of the people said investigators have been told about Gaetz and an associate discussing a plan to talk with Gaetz's ex-girlfriend in October 2020 about the ongoing sex crimes investigation. Investigators have also been provided material about the alleged discussion, the person said.

Quote

Politico first reported the obstruction investigation on Wednesday night with additional details about what is being scrutinized. According to the outlet, investigators are also looking specifically at a phone call that Gaetz had with a witness in the sex crimes investigation. The phone call had originated between the witness and Gaetz's ex-girlfriend, and at some point during the conversation, the ex-girlfriend patched Gaetz into the call, the outlet reported.

Nothing but a walking, talking fuck up.

It shows the feds know a lot more than people realized, and it shows that Gaetz made some really fucking stupid mistakes (I mean, we already knew that by way of his Venmo transactions, but this stuff pisses off the feds).

Gaetz has nobody in a higher office that can protect him.

Matt "Misery" Gaetz, "There is a justice higher than that of man's; I will be judged by him."

I totally thought he meant God.
