surely this can't be accurate

I found that same info when I went to the State Department’s site. They break down adoptions by country. Cuban law prohibits adoption of Cubans by non-Cubans.

Nestor wouldn't show up in that data regardless if I'm understanding the situation clearly. Gaetz only claims he came to Florida six years ago. So I'm guessing that if any adoption actually did take place, it would've happened afterward.

Not being a lawyer, I would think that weird custody document from a Florida court posted previously would be the right rabbit hole to go down (NTTAWWT).

I agree with this. I was posting the link just to show that it is real, legitimate data and explaining why the number of Cuban adoptions is so low. But I agree that Nestor likely wouldn’t show up in that data anyways. Perhaps because he was adopted after he got here. Or, as has been mentioned, because he wasn’t actually “adopted” by Gaetz.

I’m no lawyer but it looks like he was the attorney for the sister to obtain a guardianship. Which means the sister had custody until the boy turned 18.

Yeah, I think that Gaetz overstated and lied when he called Nestor his "son"....but I'm not sure that anything sinister really has happened between Gaetz and Nestor.  I'd have to see more info.

Yeah, and I'm the pollyanna around here.

It's quite interesting but I feel sympathy for "Nestor."

Because timelines are something I like to delve into, here are some fun tidbits:

Gaetz was born in 1982 and would've been 24 when the Mark Foley (R- Florida) scandal broke in 2006. If you'll recall, way back in the 1980's there was a lot of brouhaha over Congresspersons passing around pages like candy. After some hot air, things went quiet but it was a poorly kept secret for years that Foley (elected to the House in the mid 1990s) liked young men and pages were warned about him and potential advances. Not the only Republican representative accused of leading a secret illicit lifestyle, but he was the one who was charged after he sent inappropriate emails to a 16 year old page. (short version). In the race to fill his seat, a safe Republican district went to the Democratic challenger. Two years after he resigned over sexually explicit messages,  law enforcement in Florida determined there was insufficient evidence to conclude he had broken Florida laws.

Gaetz had been in law school at this time in Richmond, Virginia at the College of William and Mary. He graduated in 2007 with a J.D. He worked for awhile as an attorney in Fort Walton Beach prior to becoming a state legislator in 2010.

Matt's father was a state senator, so there must be something in the water there cause Florida gonna Florida.
