I read a recent twitter thread by Michael Herriot (of The Root). It started (I think) regarding some conversation about Kanye or some other celebrity. I don't follow celebrities so much so whatever started that I missed. Anyway, he discussed some of the early American history in the colonies, and more specifically South Carolina. Early white settlers are likely alive due to indigenous peoples and slaves because on more than one occasion the English/colonists would've starved to death.

His thread was borne out of former #1 NBA pick Kwame Brown going off on social media against other former players. Harriot began his thread by discussing the linguistic origin of Brown's accent (Geechi-Gullah) and, like he often does, he then wove that into a history lesson.

Similar thread that weaves some of that same history into the origin of "Cowboys". Might be relevant to this here Texas board?

The Louisiana State Police lied and said he died of injuries sustained in a car wreck. Upon noticing the taser tracks in his head, even the ME called bs on the police’s version of the facts.

This was a coverup of a lynching. Despicable.

Guest Lobo

People do weird shit to make it home to their families alive each night.  What ever happened to just stopping for takeout and wearing your seat-belt?

He’s turning attention to other things now. Looks like he’s going to keep making noise. He’ll be very unpopular here

Yep:

  • Master Trooper Chris Hollingsworth died Tuesday after a single-vehicle crash
  • Just hours earlier, he learned he would be fired for his role last year in the in-custody death of black man Ronald Greene
  • Police have not released any details about how the crash occurred but Hollingsworth was said to have been traveling at high speed
  • Greene's May 2019 death is the subject of a federal investigation
  • Authorities claim he died after crashing into a tree following a high-speed chase over a traffic violation
  • Greene's family say the state police are guilty of a cover-up and he died after being 'brutalized' by officers
  • Cops have refused to make body-cam footage available

Thread, which was worth reading. Loved the correction that they weren’t capturing slaves, they were capturing engineers

Well, this is new:

A man who killed a Lyft driver Sunday afternoon in Garland and then opened fire at Plano police headquarters before being shot by an officer may have been inspired by foreign terrorists, authorities said at a news conference Monday.

Imran Ali Rasheed, 32, a Garland resident, died from the wounds he sustained in Sunday’s shooting, police said. Authorities said he left a note that may explain his motivation but did not have evidence he had actually been in contact with a terrorist group.

The woman slain Sunday was identified earlier Monday as 26-year-old Isabella Lewis of Garland.

Garland officers were called Sunday morning to the 400 block of Forest Gate Drive, near Forest Lane and Shiloh Road, where they found Lewis dead. Police soon learned that her car had been stolen and notified nearby agencies to be on the lookout for it.

A short time later, a man who was reportedly “behaving erratically” at Plano police headquarters walked into the lobby, left and then returned with a handgun. A civilian employee, who was in the lobby with a visitor, tried to talk to the man to de-escalate the situation, but he opened fire

Someone is selling a book.

From 2016 -https://www.yahoo.com/news/ruth-bader-ginsburg-on-trump-kaepernick-and-her-lifelong-love-of-the-law-132236633.html :

"When asked by Couric how she feels about San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, and others athletes, refusing to stand for the anthem, Ginsburg replied, “I think it’s really dumb of them.”

“Would I arrest them for doing it? No,” Ginsburg elaborated. “I think it’s dumb and disrespectful. I would have the same answer if you asked me about flag burning. I think it’s a terrible thing to do, but I wouldn’t lock a person up for doing it. I would point out how ridiculous it seems to me to do such an act.”

Couric then asked, “But when it comes to these football players, you may find their actions offensive, but what you’re saying is, it’s within their rights to exercise those actions?”

“Yes,” said Ginsburg. “If they want to be stupid, there’s no law that should be preventive. If they want to be arrogant, there’s no law that prevents them from that. What I would do is strongly take issue with the point of view that they are expressing when they do that.”

Kaepernick has said that his bended knee during the national anthem before games is to protest wrongdoings perpetrated against African-Americans and other minorities in the U.S. The stance has outraged many — even President Obama has called it “messy.”

TIL Katie Couric is a Nazi…mor Antifa…or a fascist nazi….jumbo shrimps???

She's an entertainer, influencer, and self-promoter at this stage in her career. She is trying to get headlines to sell a book. She was throwing some red meat to trumpers so they would buy her book. She is grifting them - like what Trump does to trumpers.

You are smart and cynical enough to recognize and understand this promotion technique. She wants this book to sell. RBG is not the only icon she trashes in her upcoming gossip book. She is part of the circus.

I thought this was interesting....

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2020/10/16/this-summers-black-lives-matter-protesters-were-overwhelming-peaceful-our-research-finds

Quote

First, police made arrests in 5 percent of the protest events, with over 8,500 reported arrests (or possibly more). Police used tear gas or related chemical substances in 2.5 percent of these events.

Protesters or bystanders were reported injured in 1.6 percent of the protests. In total, at least three Black Lives Matter protesters and one other person were killed while protesting in Omaha, Austin and Kenosha, Wis. One anti-fascist protester killed a far-right group member during a confrontation in Portland, Ore.; law enforcement killed the alleged assailant several days later.

Police were reported injured in 1 percent of the protests. A law enforcement officer killed in California was allegedly shot by supporters of the far-right “boogaloo” movement, not anti-racism protesters. The killings in the line of duty of other law enforcement officers during this period were not related to the protests.

In short, our data suggest that 96.3 percent of events involved no property damage or police injuries, and in 97.7 percent of events, no injuries were reported among participants, bystanders or police.

These figures should correct the narrative that the protests were overtaken by rioting and vandalism or violence. Such claims are false. Incidents in which there was protester violence or property destruction should be regarded as exceptional — and not representative of the uprising as a whole.

In many instances, police reportedly began or escalated the violence, but some observers nevertheless blame the protesters. The claim that the protests are violent — even when the police started the violence — can help local, state and federal forces justify intentionally beating, gassing or kettling the people marching, or reinforces politicians’ calls for “law and order.”

City of Aurora will pay $15 million settlement over death of Elijah McClain

Aurora, Colorado —  CBS Denver has learned the City of Aurora has agreed to pay $15 million to the family of Elijah McClain to settle a federal civil rights lawsuit filed over McClain's death. The sum was confirmed to CBS Denver by three sources familiar with the tentative agreement.

All requested anonymity as they were not authorized to speak about the settlement.

City officials have acknowledged an agreement was reached, but said details would not be made public until the deal was finalized. McClain, 23, died in 2019 several days after a confrontation with Aurora police.

Aurora police approached McClain on August 24, 2019 as he was walking home from a trip to a convenience store.

A citizen had called police saying McClain "looked sketchy." When Aurora officers approached McClain, the verbal confrontation turned physical and a chokehold was applied. Paramedics injected McClain with ketamine, a powerful sedative, and he went into cardiac arrest. McClain was not armed.

Days after the confrontation, McClain was taken off life support and died. A subsequent autopsy said his cause of death was "undetermined."

His mother, Sheneen McClain, filed a federal lawsuit in 2020 against the City of Aurora and the police officers and fire department members involved in her son's death. Last month, her attorneys announced the case had been settled in principle resolving all claims in the federal civil rights case.

They did not release financial details as Sheneen McClain and Elijah McClain's biological father, Lawayne Mosley, are still addressing how the settlement will be split. A court hearing is scheduled for this Friday.

The $15 million settlement would surpass the $12 million wrongful death settlement in the case of Breonna Taylor who was shot and killed by police in Louisville, Kentucky, in a botched drug raid.

While the McClain settlement falls short of the $27 million the City of Minneapolis agreed to pay to the family of George Floyd, it will easily be the largest in Aurora Police history, according to a review of past police civil case settlements.

From 2010 through 2019, a spreadsheet compiled by Aurora administrators and obtained by CBS Denver shows the city paid out $7,397,814 for the entire 10 year period. There were no settlements of police cases listed for 2019 and 2020.

The largest previous wrongful death police case settlement in Aurora was $2,600,000 for a 2015 death.

CBS Denver has learned that in 2019, when the McClain death occurred, Aurora carried an insurance policy with a cap of $10 million. Multiple Aurora officials say in this case, the $5 million difference between the insurance policy and the settlement amount will likely be drawn from Aurora's general fund.

That $5 million draw likely won't have a large impact on Aurora residents since city sales taxes are up. For 2021, sales taxes are up 15.2% or $24.1 million from 2020. For 2021, sales taxes are expected to total $47.7 million more than was projected.

Qusair Mohamedbhai, an attorney representing Sheneen McClain, said he was not at liberty to comment on any terms of the settlement with Aurora.

Mari Newman, who represents Elijah McClain's father, said she could not comment on terms of the settlement.

A state grand jury has indicted the three Aurora police officers and two paramedics involved in McClain's death. Charges range from manslaughter to criminally negligent homicide.

Not sure if it fits here but Gov. Stitt in Okla. just commuted the death penalty of Julius Jones who many believe is innocent. He was scheduled to die at 4pm today. Very unexpected, but a good outcome. I don't know if he's innocent or not, but any ambiguity should weigh against death. The state has also botched three straight executions, it needs to be abolished altogether, at least in this state.

Governor commutes Julius Jones' death sentence

OKLAHOMA CITY — Gov. Kevin Stitt on Thursday granted clemency for Julius Jones.

He commuted Jones' death sentence to life without the possibility of parole.

Jones was set to die Thursday for the 1999 shooting death of Paul Howell of Edmond in front of his two daughters and sister. Howell’s vehicle was taken.

The Pardon and Parole Board voted 3-1 to recommend clemency with a life with parole option.

The vote came after the board voted 3-1 for commutation, but Stitt declined to act, saying clemency was the better route.

Jones has maintained his innocence and mounted a public relations campaign to get off of death row.

Jones supporters have held marches, vigils, rallies and signed petitions to draw attention to his case. His case has drawn support from actors to athletes.

Prosecutors and relatives of Paul Howell objected to clemency.

The gun wrapped in a bandana was found in a crawl space above Jones’ bedroom in his parents’ home. The ammunition was found in the home’s doorbell chime.

Howell’s sister identified the killer as wearing a red bandana.

Jones attorneys have said the real killer planted the weapon and bandana.

The bandana had Jones’ DNA on it.

On Monday, Jones’ mother, Madeline Jones, delivered a letter to Stitt’s office, saying he was home at the time of the murder and that his defense team barely lifted a finger.

“We are asking you, by the mercies of God, to send Julius back home to us,” she wrote. “You are the only one with the power and we beg you to do so.”

Jones supporters have been at the Capitol all week.

Certainly a preferable outcome since the death penalty is both imperfect and irreversible.
