AISD's (and other districts) Plans for Schools Starting August 18

it is obscene.  it is pornographic.  and it is vulgar.  it has no place in a middle school library.

Since it does not illicit sexual arousal, its not pornographic unless you get off on schools exploding.

There’s not a middle school student in the US without easy access to Shaggybevo. Lets be real.

Nevertheless, probably should be upgraded to high school only. I doubt anyone knew about the language prior to the meeting. Your middle school librarian would be quite the rebel if they put their foot down on this book.

We had to rely on the Porn Fairy, leaving porno mags in the woods, in boxes inside of suitcases under blankets in our friends' dads' closests, or in shoe boxes hidden in drawers under water beds.

We were lucky enough to obtain a VHS tape with three late 70s/early 80s porn movies on it, on loan from a friend's other brother.  There was enough wood in the house that night to build an addition.

It's a single sentence in a book. It's not obscene, it's not pornographic; it's at worst vulgar.
Parents can look online any time to see what books their kids are checking out. If they're truly worried about what their child is reading, they can preview it. A Young Adult book realistically depicting a young adult's thought process and language is not inappropriate. I pay taxes for the school library too, and I would like it to provide a wide variety of options to my child, even if parts of the book make me uncomfortable.
I read several Robert Cormier books when I was in junior high and early high school, and they were great, even though they had some dark themes like sexual assault and suicide. But they were books that didn't insult my maturity and intelligence and helped me grow intellectually and as a reader. I still have situations 30 years later where something reminds me of Jerry Renault or that kid on a bike. The books had characters that thought like me and talked like me along with great storylines. I remember my 6th grade English teacher introducing them to me with the caveat that they were controversial and sometimes banned (which is the way to get a 6th grader to read, by the way), and it frustrates me when people can't see past the words on the page to really analyze what they're saying.
Well fucking said. We are talking Middle school here. My kids middle school had one kid go to jail for murder and plenty of fuckery including porn being played on the bus. In my my middle school we had multiple murders including two kids killing a cop, multiple pregnancies, drinking , drug use racism etc.
But words on a page, let me clutch my pearls.

You grew up in a rough area.  We didn’t have murders until high school.

The good old days when watching porn was a communal event.

Yeah, that was a strange aspect of it now that I think about it.  I'm sure at some point, I asked everyone to leave the room.  To no avail.

Okay, yeah, I forgot the communal aspect of sharing porn and looking at it with friends.

Way back EARLY in my career, I litigated one of these cases on behalf of the gov't entity against the disruptive bunch.  Summary of the established law on this: fuck around, and find out.

As long as there is good evidence of you being disruptive (and now that everything is on video, there will be), you can and will get tossed out.  Further, if you are disruptive on a repeated basis, the entity can even ban you from future meetings for a reasonable period.  And/or have your ass arrested and tossed in the hoosegow.

Quoted for use of the word hoosegow.  Well done.

if kids are getting their jollys from “Out of Darkness” by Ashley Hope Pérez, they are doing it wrong.

i bet that book had a layer of dust on it when it was pulled from the shelf - what a fucking busy body.

how can one, with even a small sense of familiarity with history, think booking banning is a good thing? Does this Karen sit back with pride and think 'heck yeah, i got a book banned today.' Jeez.

Not sure if it counts because my 9th grade year was at its own campus one year removed from both middle and high school, but there was a shooting between high school students that sprouted some fun race issues including a banning of doc Martin boots in school and a permitted klan March down a Main Street.

I started out 6th grade still playing with G.I. Joe toy, and ended 8th grade fumbling through oral sex with Amy Nelson after stealing my sister's wine coolers and getting 'faced.

In between, we read Ray Bradbury.  So obviously that's where it all went wrong.

Why are you doxing poor Amy?  Her husband probably posts here.  How do you think he is going to feel when he learns his wife used to give blow jobs?

Maybe they gave each other handjobs (Rushmore reference)

And yes, as a father of an 8th grade girl whose friends seem way too sexual for that age, it's very real and quite scary. I've had weird inappropriate comments directed towards me by her friends. I'm sure some of it is shock value and meant to troll or push buttons but it doesn't make it any less gross feeling. Old man in me wants to blame social media because it typically revolves around conversations on their devices.

So I don't want to get into too many specifics but based on things going on with our daughter since the pandemic started, social media's influence, and a dose of teenage depression, I added an app on our home computer and her phone called Bark. It screens her apps, emails, and messages for any content that would be considered inappropriate for her age. It has been used to help screen for kids who might have gone on to be school shooters or committed suicide.

I'm not reading her text messages per se but I get alerts if there's content like bullying, sexual situations, depression, suicidal thoughts, or violence. We have had some issues with various things like that over the past 12 months. Some of it that's flagged may be innocuous stuff like an email that has a story with one of the things from the previous sentence from say Apple News. Other stuff might be a capture of a text chain where things like bullying, drug use, or sexual content is discussed. That way we have a heads up if anything inappropriate is going on. Our kid knows the app is on there as that was a stipulation of getting to use a phone. We held out as long as we could with her.

She also shares things with me like her friend seeing my picture and calling me a DILF. She asked me if I knew what that meant and I tried to redirect and play dumb a bit with "I'm have an idea and I imagine it's highly inappropriate". Some of these newer middle school friends are way too advanced for their ages but I think that goes hand in hand with middle school. There was certainly a lot of that in my era of the late 80s to early 90s when phones didn't exist and you had a lot of free time combined with latchkey parenting.

Some of the things she's shared with me about her friends is also troubling. Some of it might be being a product of divorce. Some of it I know involves sexual abuse at an early age. There's also a sweet girl who reminds me of my younger daughter who comes from a great family who I worry is getting negatively influenced by some of the other girls. I think she has a good head on her shoulders but there does seem to be a bit of a fascination with taking a walk on the wild side. I've discussed with my wife that she might want to reach out to the mom and just give her a bit of a heads up to be on the lookout for things just to keep her daughter and our daughter safe.

I'll be honest, what my older kid is going through with junior high heavily influenced us to get our younger daughter into a DISD academy where it's more kids who want to learn and strive to go on to better things. My older one is in with some kids who just do not give a damn about learning. It's a bit depressing as I worry about their futures. They have plenty of time to get going but I feel like that's not going to happen. I don't know their home lives or how involved their parents are. Some kids are a certain way even if their parents are well meaning and involved. I speak from experience on that one.

If your kid is getting to the phone or device age, I would highly recommend both the Bark app and Circle by Disney. The latter can be set to screen out content and block your kid from accessing it. I think that's really good for boys who you may not want searching up things they're naturally going to get into at some point. Bark is really good though as I've used it to have discussions with the older one about what they may be doing online. We put it on the younger one's tablet but haven't seen much worthy of investigating. She was being influenced at one point by an older girl in her class as their school goes 4-6 grades in one class since it's Montessori style. What a 6 grader is into and what a 4th grader is into are pretty far apart on the maturity scale and that was a problem. That same shitbird kid then became friends with my older child last year. It did not go well. Parenting in the social media age is definitely all about keeping your head on a swivel. There's a lot that can come at you at any moment.

https://www.kxan.com/news/2-men-arrested-in-connection-to-disrupted-round-rock-isd-board-meeting/

Quote

Two men are facing charges after a Round Rock Independent School District board meeting was cut short earlier this week when tensions between some board members and attendees escalated.

Dustin Clark and Jeremy Story have both been charged with hindering proceedings by disorderly conduct, according to court records.

Quote

The two men say they were arrested in the late evening Friday, held in the Williamson County Jail overnight and released around 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning.

KXAN has asked both Round Rock ISD and the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office why a warrant was issued for the two men instead of a citation. The Williamson County Sheriff’s Office referred us to the RRISD Police Department even though court documents show the sheriff’s office was the arresting agency. A spokesperson for Round Rock ISD did not answer that question but did confirm the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office was the arresting agency.

Quote

Meanwhile, Story says he was outside the entrance to the main room trying to gain access when he was pinned against a pole by police. Story says he’s had disagreements with the Round Rock ISD school board prior to this week.

Ummm, yeah, we all saw the videos of you trying to get past the cops, and now your kids will be embarrassed for years to come.  It's Round Rock, you're lucky they didn't tase you.

Quote

A spokesperson for Round Rock ISD says the two men were charged for their actions this week “as well as previous meetings.” She noted there is still an active investigation into the incidents.

Quote

When KXAN interviewed both Story and Clark Saturday morning after they were released from the Williamson County Jail they said they disagreed with that statement. They instead feel as though the board were the ones creating a threatening environment and that they were being targeted for reacting.

They have hired a lawyer but say they’re really just asking that the school board allows more access during meetings.

You laugh, but that's practically a baptist/CoC tradition.  There were one or two girls in every bible class who gave that up regularly yet considered themselves virgins, purity rings and all.

Anal Lube issue:

FWIW, Kara King is the mayor of Bee Cave.  So she's already in the political realm.

She did a great (not kidding), no GREAT job of marshaling the resources to get us power during the freeze.

My guess is that coming from her, it has some clout.  They'll either remove it or put some type of notice on it.

Other than that, as Hawkeye Pierce once said, there's not a machine invented that can measure the amount of indifference I have on this subject.

The speaker was Kara Bell, not Kara King.

The latter is a level-headed public servant and middle school math teacher.

The former is a psychotic, failed school board candidate who is fronting an astroturf movement to kill public education.

LOL reading is fundamental.  My oops.

You're right on both counts.

Still, I can see a lot of support in the district for removing the book.  Lotta anal sex loving trophy moms here won't put up with it.

This is gonna be a bible so just skip if you're not feeling it.

Not AISD but I'm gonna vent. Disclaimer - born and raised in MI, moved to Austin after school for a few, live back in MI now.

Two neighboring counties. Pretty different Politically.

Wife teaches in County A. We reside in County B, where our kids attend. 3rd and 6th - separate schools, elementary and middle.

County A won't issue a mask mandate, leaves it up to the individual districts. The district my wife works in decides not to issue the mandate.

Wife and I fully vaxxed. She got Pfizer in February. I'm in the Moderna trial. She teaches K. She has by her count 6 kids who wear masks out of 22ish. My wife double masks at work.

Wife comes home from work on Thursday with barely a sniffle. I mean I didn't even know. Friday after work she is starting to have a sore throat. She says she wants a test Saturday, I mansplain to her that it's seasonal allergies and she's being ridiculous. She tests anyway, rapid and send out both positive. Very mild still. We decide pretty quickly we're not going to quarantine separately. Hell my daughter (3rd) shared a bed with her on Thursday night. Daughter got sniffles Saturday and was up to 100 temp. Sounded congested. Son (6th) said he had a sore throat and some sniffles Sunday.

Our district follows the County B's school recommendations. It calls for 10 days quarantine from first symptom if positive. If negative it calls for 20 days if you are co-habitating with someone who is positive. Because the positive person could potentially pass it to the negative person on Day 10 and then the negative person could develop symptoms/test positive ten days later. So I knew I had to get my kids tested today so we could potentially shorten that duration. I am not one of those selfish a-holes who doesn't want to deal with my kids, I just know that for them, being in school is much better for them than being home, and if they can miss a week instead of two, we need to do that.

So we went and got tested this morning (sidebar - early morning I had a vaccine study appointment in Detroit with Moderna, they told me they didn't need to test me b/c if I don't have symptoms the vaccine is doing its job and we're good). My daughter (3rd) tests negative. Son (6th) is positive.

On the County A side, they were not going to call the families in my wife's class until Sunday night. They gave my wife permission to call them earlier. It was hard for her to do (I potentially infected your kid with Covid because one of his classmate's asshole parents decided they didn't want to mask their kid up but oh I can't really tell you that part) but she did it. And found out that half the class, including a couple of the masked kids, are symptomatic. In looking back after the phone calls, she knows which unmasked kid it was.

My wife's class did not have school today and they will go virtual until the 28th, starting tomorrow. She will be required to teach virtually or she will have to use her sick days. Yes this district is Unionized.

For my kids' district, as of now my 3rd grader who is negative cannot go back to school for 20 days post wife's first symptoms. Unless she test positive. So I'm taking her to get another test on Wednesday. No contact tracing involved because she's negative, despite the fact that she had symptoms on Saturday.

My son, who is positive, had to help contact trace. The district/County's policy is to go back TWO days from the time that you had symptoms. For my son, that was Sunday. Which means it affected classmates on Friday. It's funny my wife picked up on this distinction during the phone conversation with whoever at the middle school. I would not have known this policy but Mrs. Baboon did. And she definitely picked up on a vibe of 'Are you SURE his first symptoms were Sunday and not Monday'. Anyway, fuck you, even though we understand that your hesitation is just because you don't want to call Karen. But no his first symptoms were Sunday. So they went back to Friday, and anyone who my son was around without a mask within X feet (lunch) or anyone with a mask that he was directly next to, they have to quarantine for 10 days. My wife had to send a pre-emptive text to the moms (along with some boastful pictures of my cock, I'm sure) to warn them that this was coming.

All of these rules are at least a little arbitrary. At best. But I get it, it's impossible to be completely on top of anything as things change in real time, so everything is a best ass guess. I am really grateful that my family is not really being affected by this Delta bitch. I am thankful that my wife and I are both fully vaxxed and that this variant (and the previous) do not to particularly seem to affect children. If anything I guess this is a tale of how the selfish actions of a family in County A shut down an entire Kindergarten classroom, got 10-12 kids Covid, got their teacher Covid, got the teacher's kid Covid an entire County over, got ~ 15 of his friends quarantined for 10 days with no virtual option, and got the other teacher's kid a 20 day quarantine from school.

Round Rock going to try and discuss things again.

https://www.kxan.com/news/education/round-rock-isd-to-discuss-censuring-2-board-trustees-at-wednesday-meeting/

Quote

In addition to the censure items, the board will attempt to discuss its mask mandate again at the Wednesday evening meeting, after the item was already rescheduled twice. Superintendent Dr. Hafedh Azaiez will suggest connecting the district’s mask rules to different COVID-19 risk stages set by Williamson and Travis County health authorities.

The Wednesday board meeting will start at 6 p.m. at the Raymond E. Hartfield PAC off McNeil Drive in northwest Austin

And they censured some board members

Quote

The Round Rock Independent School District school board will consider whether to censure two board trustees at a meeting Wednesday evening, according to the meeting agenda. The discussion will come on the same day the board again discusses whether to continue its mask mandate.

Those two trustees are Mary Bone and Danielle Weston, whose actions the district claims led to the disruption of the Sept. 14 board meeting.

The resolutions say Bone and Weston “repeatedly insisted on calling for a vote on spacing rules for the September 14, 2021 Board Meeting even though this matter was not on the agenda.”

Quote

The pair will be referred to as “Censured Trustee Weston” and “Censured Trustee Bone” on all district communications and the district website.

Hate to break it to them, but that won't be the first time that somebody in Williamson County has been referred to as "Censured Trustee Bone".
