welcome to March 2020...but I'll save the CR.

Edit: some will have a hard time getting off the milk.

Yeah, I mean, it’s conceivable that as hospitals have more empty beds they start relaxing their admission criteria. They like money.

Recently I had a conversation with a doctor who practices in Texas and who is a relative of my wife:

Me: is it true that the law in Texas prohibits hospitals from employing doctors directly?

Doc: yes, it’s true. Doctors can work for a “practice”, and the practice contracts with the hospital

Me: and why is the law that way?

Doc: the idea is that doctors working for “practices” will order more “procedures” and therefore make more money for the hospitals

Me: that doesn’t seem to be for the benefit of the patient

(pause)

Doc: there are many doctors who think like you on that matter

Starting today Travis County is no longer updating weekend data but will batch it into Mon/Tues.

These are the Friday numbers as I am Mr.Mom this weekend so didn't get to it yesterday.

I was curious so looked it up.  appears Travis County averages about 125 deaths a week for 2018/2019.  a steady rise from 2014 where it was about 100 per week.

Does anyone have the 2020 mortality number for TC?

11% of new cases in 50-59 is too high.

might say the same for 13% at 40-49.

that’s pretty much a quarter of new cases, right where it starts getting more dangerous.

Isn’t that pretty much baked in bc all the real olds are vaccinated?

I’d like to see 90% of the cases at 39 and lower, but the distribution doesn’t really matter when the total number of cases drops below a threshold that makes the %s insignificant. Maybe it’s already there, I don’t know the math on that.

Amazingly good day in Travis County (with the weekend cases in mix) 105 new cases, 7 admits and only 85 people hospitalized. (lowest in hospital since 10/10)

Interesting piece of info in a post that Bolverk made in CR regarding Austin moving to stage 2.  Might explain some of the observations being discussed up thread regarding the disconnect between admissions and case counts in Travis county recently.

The decision was also made after health officials considered the impact of hospital admissions from people outside Travis County on the area's coronavirus figures.

Hospital admissions from non-Travis County residents were being weighed into the rolling average that health officials use to determine the area's risk level. Using a "filtered" moving average – that is, only counting admissions from Travis County residents – Escott said the area had been below Stage 2 admissions thresholds for 10 of the last 14 days.

That certainly explains why the admits/cases were wonky the past month or so. Just wasn't adding up.

Yes, they are way ahead of Texas by some metrics and on par with Texas by others, and they are not significantly worse off than Texas by any metric.

Percentage fully vaccinated: NM 45%, Texas 33%

Covid deaths: NM 0.5 per day per million people, Texas 1.5 per day per million people

New daily cases: NM 87 per million people, Texas 73 per million people

Covid hospitalizations: NM 8 per 100k people, Texas 9 per 100k people

In Travis Co, today was the first day the seven day average has been below 50 since May 17, 2020.

Careful on those daily stats.  Lots of counties have stopped reporting numbers over the weekend so you're likely to see big drops on Sat/Sun/Mon as weekend numbers dip, then bigger numbers Mon/Tue/Wed as the data catches up.  Seven day averages are your friend...

Texas had low numbers on the weekend, tweets all around!  Today was 8-10x the weekend numbers statewide ... not as many tweets.  Still headed in the right direction.

Went to Santa Fe for spring break. It was absurd. On the road all their highway signs were like go home- certain death awaits you if You don’t. It was... very odd.
for all you dim literalist that wasn’t exactly what the signs said. But it was incredibly scary sounding. We spent out time there hiking in the mountains. I think I read (when I was there) it was the only state in the country not allowIng movie theaters and maybe bowling alleys? to be open.

54 cases in Travis County but with 19 admits. There are now 91 people hospitalized. Must be taking in folks from outlying counties as noted in article above.

Literally every person from the 5 surrounding counties who needs to be hospitalized with covid must be getting sent to Austin.  Is there like a designated “covid hospital” or something?

That is kind of maddening. Unvaccinated rurals taking up Austin hospital beds no doubt.

I am guaranteeing you that is the case.  It is not like Austin hospitals should refuse to treat them since they have capacity.  They are going to Austin because Austin has the better hospitals.  We have a lot of neighbors to our south who have chosen (wisely and I do not blame them) to be treated at hospitals in McAllen, Harlingen, Del Rio, Laredo and El Paso as opposed to the inferior hospitals in Matamoros, Reynosa, Acuna, Nuevo Laredo and Juarez.  You can look at the cases versus deaths ratios in those border counties compared to the rest of the state and it is obvious we have a whole lot of people getting sick in Mexico but dying in Texas.

I have argued when looking at Texas Covid stats, to get a fair picture of how the state has dealt with the disease, that folks who get sick in another country (Mexico) and come to Texas for treatment should not count as Texas hospitalizations or deaths.  Same with urban counties who treat rural county patients.

I'll continue to follow all the local stats and such mainly because I've been conditioned to do so for over a year.  But with UT going maskless and 100% capacity for sporting events (official as of today), it seems far less relevant.  The world is thankfully returning to normal.
