Based on just observations….last Monday was the turning point day for Austin, when the bulk of the population said fuck it, no more masks. And it was really almost overnight. Friday lunch downtown, most people wore masks. Monday lunch, very few masks.

I shopped at HEB yesterday for the first time without a mask, and I was far from alone, although there were still plenty of masks. But elsewhere, very few masks.

That was my experience as well. HEB by my house finally took down the huge mandatory mask sign so I decided to go in without it. Walked in and the first few people I saw were all wearing it so I thought about putting it on but finally said fuck it I’m just here to buy some groceries and move on.

The liquor store next door said masks were encouraged so I wore it.

Went out to eat and San Marcos last Friday.  First time I had seen wait staff not wearing masks since this stuff started.  Saw people the next day working at Proof in Buda.  No a masks.  Goodyear store in Kyle today, No masks.  @#$(&*@# solar panel systems dudes that dropped by my house... no masks.

I went into a convenience store in my neighborhood today without a mask for the first time in 15 months.

yes, I've got family in Hockley county and they get their news from facebook and they literally said out loud that "fauci and gates released the virus to make money off the vaccine".  Just breathtakingly stupid.  And these are good people.  Had one uncle tell me that given his age and health his doc told him he was not at risk.  Disregard the fact that he's 5'10" and 230, I explained that it wasn't him I was worried about but our other, older, fatter relatives.

more proof it's not a vaccine.  the jab you get is basically a thera flu for COVID remedy

when you get a measles or polio vaccine you don't get polio or the measles because it's a vaccine.

Everything about this event is backwards.  Close parks and pools last year because the fear of congregation.  Yet the protesters and the homeless around town escaped the disease while outdoors.

Vaccines don't create a bubble around you to prevent the virus from entering your body.

If the COVID-19/flu/measles/whatever virus enters your body and starts reproducing, your body, via the vaccine, fights back against the infection. Whether you should be officially counted as being ill with that disease is an academic question.

I imagine many people with any vaccine "get" the illness but the vaccine works to eliminate it. AKA the vaccine is working as designed.

Sorry for delay. Was on business trip and landed today and basically went right to youngest son's baseball practice. Still a really good story for Travis County.

Only 5 deaths from 6/3 to 6/16. They break down as:

20 to 29 (1), 40 to 49 (2), 60 to 69 (1), 80+ (1)

From a cases perspective in the span from 6/9 to 6/17 there were 272 cases. Crazy to think we were getting that in one day back in February.

This is the issue in a nutshell.  What any of us does to fight this thing depends entirely on where we put our trust in the myriad sources of (mis)information.  Even for the level-headed well-informed unselfish follow the science types, getting to the cat fax of the matter is way more challenging than it should be.  It is way too easy for any mouthpiece to come across as authoritative and credible, and when you combine this with how quickly the guidance can change, it's an extremely frustrating situation.

I'm not trying to call into question any of the information quoted above.  I honestly don't know which is correct, but I should, and that's the problem.

Great post. Daily I'm amazed the impact social media has on one's POV around SARS-CoV-2. I get that inherently science should never be settled and always changing, the response to this disease always has felt like drunken sailor trying to re-record a Tupac album.

This is a 6 day view as between LL playoffs and work I am slammed (and TC doesn't update weekends anyway).

197 cases over 6 days so ~33 cases/day over that stretch. Another bit of good news is that latest deaths update show only 3 deaths from 6/16 to 6/24.

Only 60 people hospitalized, 25 in ICU. Bear in mind across big 3 hospital chains in TC there are ~480 ICU beds so this is blip for them. There are also ~2500 beds total between big 3 chains so 60 is mice nuts overall.

Why is this thread still a thing?

I am actually really close to "retiring" my input here as I do think to a large degree this thread has run its course. Now if cases start to run up with "Delta" variant I can always resume.

I wish Travis would break out Vaccinated vs Non to see cases/deaths etc

I started this break out by age demo last July so I figure one more day and then I will be out.

Last update. It has been a crazy year of updating this info but I do believe it is time to retire.

Only 22 cases today overall and the demographic data is borked as Travis County is having some issues, so with that I bid this thread adieu.

56 people hospitalized.

This thread definitely served a good purpose and I appreciate all of the positive feedback y'all passed my way over the past 12 months.

Here's hoping that more and more folks get vaccinated and that the Delta variant has no impact on Texas.

Hook 'em Horns!

Sorry dude but you gotta come back until the thing is all the way dead.  24 admits today, 159 cases, 70 hospitalized.  Pretty sure those are all 30 day highs.

Three cases of the COVID-19 Delta variant have been traced back to a student ministry camp hosted in Giddings in late June.

Quote

Clear Creek Community Church — located in League City near Houston — confirmed more than 450 people attended the leadership camp at Tejas Camp & Retreat in Giddings, east of Bastrop in Lee County. Nearly 150 adults and children have since either self-reported or had a lab test-confirmed positive case of COVID-19.

“From the beginning of the pandemic, we have sought to love our neighbors by practicing strict safety protocols,” Lead Pastor Bruce Wesley said in a July 3 statement. “We are surprised and saddened by this turn of events. Our hearts break for those infected with the virus.”

COVID cases are spiking in the UK and to a lesser extent in Israel, which are both heavily vaccinated. Fortunately, the cases do not appear to severe, at least yet. The same thing will probably happen here.

Is happening here. We are just too big for it to happen all at once.

Again, would love to know how many of those from the church camp gathering who tested positive had been vaccinated.  Now, I'm sure some of the kids who tested positive are too young for the vaccine, but I'm guessing a fair amount of those vaccine-eligible who tested positive did not get any shots.

But hey, who needs a vaccine when you have thoughts and prayers.

Talked to a co-worker yesterday who tested positive (along with his wife and teenage son) for the Delta variant over the weekend.

He, his wife and his teenage son have all been fully vaccinated with Moderna (April / May timeframe) .

Son apparently picked it up at a camp somewhere in west Texas a week or so ago. Came home after camp with a dry cough and generally worn out.  They assumed he was just tired from camp and had some allergies, etc.  Cough and fatigue persisted and his ears had fluid so they went to the doctor to check on a possible ear infection.  Doc said they needed to covid test even though they had been vaccinated.  Son was positive.  Parents were tested and were positive also.  The mom and dad both developed a cough and the dad even ended up with a 104 fever.  County health tested them all again to confirm it was the Delta variant and it was.  They're in Kerr county.

So...this church camp outbreak. The Houston-area kids came from three different campuses of the same megachurch, so now each campus is a vector.

The idea of churches with multiple campuses has always bugged me for no real good reason. I guess I've always thought a church was defined by its building, not some stated allegiance. (It reminds me of a KFC / Pizza Hut /Taco Bell. One place can't be three restaurants, dammit.)

Anyway, now I have science on my side. Instead of this being confined to one area now it's in three because this one minister / chancellor of a three-church system sent all these kids to the same camp. And I bet that pattern holds for the exurbs of every big city.

Ok here is skinny for Travis County since June 29th (although the last day I had pulled was June 30th the data from TC was borked for that day)

Travis County from 6/29 to 7/7 has had 341 CV19 cases. 159 of them came yesterday so obviously a big blip of that. Not sure if this is a true up for TC or if the sign of new movement. One thing that is of concern is that hospitalizations while still low compared to where they were in the Spring are at 91 which is up from 55 hospitalized on July 1st. What I don't know is if Travis Co is still bringing in people from outside the case count area into the hospital. This would influence the numerator of hospitalizations vs denominator of cases.

At this stage, I’d like to have the groups parsed into vaxed/not vaxed so we can see the difference and properly evaluate our individual risk, but good luck finding that data.

of half the new cases are of vaxed people but only 5% of hospitalized are, that’s important data.

Do not like.  If a variant infects vaccinated people resulting in severe illness, we are fucked.  It would be like the vaccines are worthless, and if we’ve learned one thing during the last 18 months it’s that society at large is unwilling to make the sacrifices necessary to prevent the spread of severe illnesses.  We’re fucked.

The Brits provide something like what you are talking about, but not broken out further by seriousness of cases (that I could find).
