I don’t know. Considering the state of medical science in 1918, and the fact that the war effort precluded the actions we took last year to flatten the curve, it’s hard to say this is “nowhere near” as bad.

The actions we took to flatten the curve were precluded by the fact that we took germ reactions to an aerosol olives virus that we were never gonna prevent from doing its thing once it got loose.

Masking, social distancing and the local shelter in place orders in April 2020 definitely flattened the curve and undoubtedly saved lives. Those aren’t specifically “germ reactions.”

and FWIW-  a substantial  portion of the deaths from the 1918 flu were military, which took virtually no steps to protect the soldiers, as the Wilson administration barely acknowledged the disease until it was raging out of control.

Hopefully, game day doesn't become an issue. No masks. Full stadium. Still worth it for me.

They are outdoors, and I've really looked around at it (I was at the Tech game and the Arkie game in Fayettenam), and the natural spacing in the stadium, especially as you are all facing the same direct (that is, not facing each other) makes me think that there's a low concentration of breath particles hitting anyone.  Think about it this way -- I'm sure I've been around people with awful breath at games over the years, but I've never smelled it.  I just think that the likelihood of transmission at an outdoor event like that is relatively low.  Not impossible, but low.

Was there natural spacing walking into the game?  At line for confessions and the bathroom?  Exiting the stadium, etc?  It's a game and people are packed on top of each other Its also importantly outdoors.  We've known since very early in the pandemic that UV light kills this faster than it kills movie vampires.

The pre-post game bars/restaurants are probably a bigger concern that the game itself.

I agree with this.  I think its where people get packed pre/post are the issue.  I threw on a mask when I went to the bathroom or walked in the west side upper deck concession area (stiflingly warm and packed) but otherwise in the stands it felt fine. Blue hairs inbetween the 15s have all kinds of natural social distancing, pandemic or not.

The ONLY level of control I have ever seen at these games or any other are on the escalators going up.  Even then you are packed in tight.  Then you have the elevators going up/down.  It's a mess.  But it's an outside mess, which as we have seen it the biggest mitigating factor.  Sunlight, open spaces, and wind are not an airborne virus's friend.

this. there was no real spacing at the ark game.  people are packed in about a foot from each other and turn to face each other, talk, drink, yell the whole time.

Yeah, we avoided the escalators.  Told me son... nope, no escalators this time.  To the ramp!

The only times we felt a bit crowded was as people bunched up to enter the stadium, and that was only for 4-5 minutes -- once we were in, people were moving reasonably quickly, and we didn't linger below the stands.  I took one piss, bathroom wasn't crowded (of course, I do not have a wide stance -- I am not an elected official).  We bailed before the end of the game, because it was an ass-kicking, so not very crowded then either.  We didn't do any pre or post game restaurants or bars.  Same with the Arkie game, really -- we tailgated outside, and with the open air in the stadium, just weren't worried.  When we went inside to hit the bathroom or grab a beer, we masked up.

Really, didn't feel bunched together much at all at the hime game.  And the fresh air and sunlight help a WHOLE lot.

FWIW, I'm pretty sure I got Covid at the UT-Louisiana game.  My guess is it was the HUGE crowds trying to get to the upper deck, with 10K+ people breathing in the same air going up the escalators.  If I were constructing a way for 10K people to all breathe the exact same air, that might be it.  Like a Covid assembly line.

Fully vaxxed with Moderna back in March.  Nobody else in my family got it despite sleeping with my wife for several days and riding in the car with the whole family.  Initial at-home test was negative followed by positive test a few days later.

How bad did it hit you?  Did the vaccine help limit your sympoms?

How would he know if it did? If symptoms are light you’d never know if it was the vaccine or that you got a light case—just like the majority of cases. I’m not arguing against the vaccine or that the testing suggests that the vaccine prevents serious infection and deaths. But in individual cases you’ll never know if it was the vaccine or whether you just got a minor infection.

89 hospitals were out of ICU beds last week.

But there are plenty with room. And the numbers in SETex peaked some time ago and are coming down. SE Texas as a region has never had to eat into the Covid excess ICU capacity levels. And as for general beds in the SE Texas region (approximately 9.5 million people) over 7,600 beds are available of a total of 19,990 general beds. Covid patients make up less than 16% of the occupied general beds.

Most hospitals don't keep a lot of excess ICU beds.

Yep. ICU beds are pretty much at full, or near full, capacity irrespective of Covid spikes. The graphs at Setrac.org show this very well.

It gradually progressed from feeling like allergies to light flu-like symptoms.  Then for a few days I was almost well, before it got worse again for a few more days.  Apparently this is pretty common.

I continued to work remotely the whole time. Never got a fever or really lost smell or taste.  Not too bad all things considered.  I would be quite surprised if the vaccine didn't help me at all.  But who knows.
