Dang, we're some battered bitches up in here.

1.  9 years old mowing my dads trailer park and hit a .22 shell that one of the tenants had dropped in the grass. Went into the front of my left calf at the biggest part going through and stopped about 1/2" from going all the way through..

2. Multiple times as a kid getting fingers broken in car/screen doors.

3. Dislocated left elbow in 2nd game of season.  Ran keeper on wishbone, broke through, nothing in front of me. Got tripped up from behind and put my hand down to stay up and caught a helmet in elbow and came down on it. Shoved the ulna and radius up into my upper arm, which at that point about 4" shorter than my right arm.

4.  Torn left rotator cuff last practice of soph year.

5.  Freshman year, final game, won a game we supposed to lose. Starting right guard picked me up on his shoulders in locker room, lost balance fell forward dropping me on my knees on concrete, yep broke both kneecaps.

6. Practicing Kung Fu in college, misjudged distance and kicked tree with knee fully locked, blew everything.

7. 1985 Driving reference stakes in job and caught left index finger between sledgehammer and steel reference stake, severed finger that had to be re-attached.

8.  1996. Cut off lower right leg in construction accident.  Was reattached, but 18 surgeries later was finally amputated in 1999.

9. Torn left rotator cuff misdiagnosed as "tendonitis" (mother fucker), totally destroyed shoulder at end, no one would touch as far as doctors go for 2 1/2 years.  Finally found an orthopedic surgeon to help me with reverse replacement...BUT FIRST...

10.  While awaiting surgery on left shoulder, tripped over a tree root on our property and fell up against tree and another tree root with right shoulder.  Yep torn rotator cuff, had to be fixed first.  30 days after surgery, 2 days before Thanksgiving started therapy.  Kept telling the therapist that she was having me do things the doctor said not to do yet.  She insisted she had the orders and directives so keep going.  Next exercise... Snaps, left shoulder dislocates, right arm drops... with a return rotator cuff ( Dr was about as mad as a person could get) So, two weeks later the right shoulder was repaired for the second time.

11.  Back to#9.  Complete reverse shoulder replacement.  Sucks.  About 50% range of motion, 50% strength.  Fucking sucks.

Edit: #12.  Hell I forgot about the knee surgery I had in October. Moderate tear in the lateral meniscus and a huge tear(doctors words, not mine) in the medial meniscus, along with 2 small partial ligament tears.

I won't even mention broken ribs on 4 different occasions. ( Previous poster s are right, don't sneeze, cough, yawn or take deep breaths, everything hurts.  Nor the 9 concussions, or ripped off finger and toe nails.

Sometimes life comes at you, Fast and Furious.

Numerous broken bones and stitches, but the one that hurt the most is now haunting me 30 years later.  Was skateboarding back from class and my front wheel hit an acorn or some shit.  Board stopped dead, but I kept going.  Snapped my ankle and tore ligaments, but not all the way through.  Agonizing.  Ortho said he could operate, but at my age the ligaments should eventually heal.  I said fine.  About 9 months ago I started getting a lot of pain out of the ankle.  Eventually saw an ankle specialist,  had the MRI, and he asked if I had an injury earlier in my life.  Oh yeah, and told him.  Said the ligaments are scarred, partially torn, and generally fucked up.  So I need surgery.  But covid hit right before I could schedule it.  so now I have to wait.  Right ankle, so I can't drive for a week, and won't be able to do much.  So I deal with the pain and get through the summer, and will deal with it in the fall.

Pissing is easy....it's when you've got to call your wife to wipe your ass is when you know you're locked up. Try as I might, there's no way that I could make that swipe...and I definitely needed a swipe. True love...

Playing baseball at an old elementary playground, was coming under a high pop fly, and didn't realize how close I was to the rusty backstop. Caught a screw to the face that ripped half my cheek off. I have a nice scar down the left side of my face. A 1/4" or so in the other direction and it would've gotten my eye.

Broken pelvis as a child.  I was afraid I wouldn’t be allowed to play ball so I didn’t say anything that day and limped to bed early. My Mother found me whimpering in my sleep the next morning.

Hopped up on a dorm bed and had a forgotten #2 pencil point break off basically in my taint.  Graphite point is still there I guess.

Worst pain was being on the losing end of a collision with a base runner in college.  I bit through the front 1/3 of my tongue to the point it was just holding on by the bottom flap and a few thin strips that weren’t severed.  Caused a nice fight while I was out cold.  Couldn’t talk for many days and had to have some speech therapy afterwards. Tongues heal remarkably fast but beyond the initial pain, the phantom pain as the nerve ending healed over the next few months was like having someone hit my tongue with a surprise 120v periodically throughout the day.

Took what felt like a 134 mph fastball to the forearm in high school that hurt like a motherfucker. Pitcher is lucky I didn’t charge the mound, I totally would’ve beaten the shit out of him. But I was far and away the best player on the team, couldn’t risk an ejection. Hyperextended my knee getting blocked during football practice once, really lucky nothing got torn.

I was pretty active in my youth, played a lot of sports, played outside, rode my bike around town, got in more than a handful of fights. Never broken a bone or gotten a serious injury in my life. Some people are just genetically superior to others I guess.

Had quite a few.  But, the worst is, I dislocated a rib on a hard right handed fast turn with a bump at apex (I know, username and all) due to a seat that was too short and the side barrier not being lined up properly. I sneezed the next day and felt paralyzed for about a minute.  For the next month, I feared any sneeze or cough. Compared to some others on here, I am pretty lucky.

Have a shitload more where I 'just' got stitches.  Here's the greatest hits:

1.  At 9 brother and I were hammering ants.  I lean in to get a look and he freaks out yanking the hammer back and the claw digs in right above my eye.  Was 1 cm from being blind.  It stuck there for effect and we both were screaming freaking out.

2. At 12 flipped on my bike - it was old and the rubber end of the handle bare had 'poked through'...landed on that handle bar.  Ended up in the hospital with severe internal injuries including a perforated bowel...was in ICU before they finally took me for surgery.  Supposedly close to death - no idea at that age.  I do know they likely fucked up not immediately taking me to the OR as my abdomen was very obviously 'surgical' on exam for a solid 48 hours before they went in for the ex-lap and found a total mess.

3. Couple years ago we hit a lounge for some event.  Apparently a girl at our table had a stalker.  I'm looking down at my phone and he smashes a full magnum of Belvedere on my head.  Luckily was wearing a hat.  None of us knew the guy or had ever seen him.  He took a good beating before the cops showed up.  Not from me obviously - I remained conscious but ended up getting glass picked out of my head for a solid hour.  The perp ran over a psychiatrist in a stolen car and killed her the night before his trial date...on same accident he hit 2 British tourists who suffered compound lower extremity fractures.  He's rotting in jail now.

4. Also a couple of years ago, was at 11 in Miami...strip club that goes night club and we were at lowest level after the strip club portion of the evening was over.  A nice young lady working overtime was on the level above when she fell down on us.  Her and I went crashing through a glass table.  Severe cut to my back.  Jackson Memorial on a Saturday has more serious shit - took forever to get stitched up.  The ER doc flipped when I finally told him I'm a doc after waiting 2 hours.  Told friends not to pull that card but finally they lost their cool as I was bleeding out all over the place and had only a dirty rag on my back for pressure.  Dumbass didn't give me antibiotics and I had lost a couple units of blood and barely remember shit.  I walk out AMA and manage to fly home after friends wheeled me to my flight.  Good friend had a county hearing for rights to build a new hospital and I was vouching for him in front of the board so my driver dresses me and takes me even though he thought I was a moron.  I drank water all night and had zero piss - told myself it was because I was anemic (full on kidney failure/sepsis).  My turn to talk comes up and I go right up front and collapse...I guess they pick me up and take me right to Northwestern but it was too late...already a massive infection.  They thought it was nec fasc for a few hours.  I thought I'd be tough and say no to pain pills with the ER doc...big mistake when the lady trauma surgeon came in she tore all the sutures, external and internal out...the right move but get me some damn pain meds or warning first.  Within a few hours I had a hole the size of a softball down to my lungs and was in the ICU.  The wound care for the next couple months was pretty much hell.

Lots of other bones broken and small stuff but those are the ones I'll never forget.

I had a torn rotator cuff that I never had fixed. My horse threw me and I landed on my bad shoulder. When I went in to get it fixed they repaired the torn rotator cuff, replaced all the tendons with transplants, and reattached my biceps muscle which had detached. Rehab was a bitch, but I eventually regained about 95% of my range of motion and became pain free for the first time in about ten years. That was about ten years ago and it’s still going strong.

Got into a fight at a frat house party and pushed a douchebag through a window.  As he went through my instinct was - bad idea - grab him.  I tried but grabbed jagged glass. He fell 5 feet without injury, unfortunately.

Pointer finger cut badly at the base.  Off to ER, new overnight MD takes a look and says, All Good, sew him up.  Wrong. Went to a hand specialist after a couple of days who looked it over and said, with alarm, "Who treated you at the ER? Your tendon is sliced."  Scheduled surgery for next day, pulled my tendon up from the lower part of my hand, where it had retracted like a rubber band.  Hand now looks like Frankenstein, as they cut back and forth looking for the tendon.

Still can't bend my pointer finger because of the scar tissue in the tendon track.   I show it to my kids often as dumb shit that can happen with the combination of alcohol and youth.

Tore my distal biceps tendon lifting an end of a table.  Audible pop.  Nauseating pain.  No "Popeye" arm.  Felt a bit better a couple of days later, but lost strength for sure. Surgery and physical therapy.  Pretty much back to normal 4 months later.  Not 100%, but getting close.

That’s a bitch to rehab.  Just have to be careful a long ass time.  Good luck.

Sliced off a chunk of my knee slide tackling in soccer game. Apparently one the the metal sprinkler heads wasn’t removed before the game.

Not an injury per say in the traditional sense, but had gallbladder pancreatitis this past fall and almost died from it. It was bad, and it was painful, and it sucked for a long time.

I'm told it's a stronger attachment (screwed down) versus the original attachment.  As far as general duty on my arm, it's fine.  And, as far as benchmark, I'm pretty sure I could get pulled up on a slalom ski at this point  Bottom line is that the shit is screwed to my arm.  But I feel some strain on my my incision if there's indirect pressure on it.

Once you let it heal for sure.  Knew too many athletes who couldn’t wait long enough for that.

I dislocated a rib when i took a hard fall snowboarding years ago. Coughing, laughing, sneezing, were a bitch.

I've been pretty strict with how much I lift.  Skipping out on water skiing this summer.  Fortunately, it's not my dominant arm.  So no interference with the bate regimen.

playing slow pitch softball in my early 20s, I was playing 2nd and guy hits a hard grounder at me. there's a runner on 1st so I charge it to try for the double play, or at least get the lead runner. The ball takes a crazy second hop that drills me just above my right eye. Doesn't hurt too bad initially but I have a feeling that this is not going to go well. I've got my hand over my eye as teammates all surround me to check on me. As I pull my hand away blood pours down my face and out of my hand creating a pool in the sand at my feet, and a couple teammates almost hurl from the sight of that and the cut along my eyebrow. The umpire is also an EMT and he looks at my cut and says "Get to the ER. Now . Keep pressure on that cut". Wife (GF at the time) hauls ass to the nearest ER as the throbbing starts while simultaneously getting lightheaded from the blood loss. My shirt looks like it OJ used it to clean up with. Ten stitches later I am out of there. Right eye was swollen shut for 2 days, and the left was blackened as well. On the bright side, I found out later that the ball caromed right to the shortstop and we got 4-6 force out at 2nd for those of scoring at home.

Had a car wreck in 2001. Crushed the ball in my shoulder joint. Had to replace with a titanium one, screws and a rod down my humerus. Six months of PT and nearly a year of sleeping on an incline. Hardest, longest and most painful recovery I could imagine. It was over a year before I could sleep in any position other than on my back. I still have limited range of motion in that arm.

—Skull fracture at 1yo.  Don’t remember that, but good stories.
—compound fracture L elbow at 6. Do remember that.
—L wrist broken twice.
—L collarbone twice, R once.

—scalp ripped, right ear mostly torn off running into a T-post playing tennis on campus. Instead of hospital, campus police took me to quack shack on campus. Old doc with shaking hands didn’t give enough local for the last 6-7 stitches on the scalp, the last 10 or so on my ear. When I complained (loudly) he said “aw, just think about them boys in the civil war who had their legs amputated with no anesthesia.”  This was 1987.
—left shoulder dislocated many, many times, finally had to have it tightened up. The pain from the surgery and rehab was the worst I’ve ever had.
—Torn ligaments in both ankles repeatedly. Never any fun. Pic from the worst, 2010.
—multiple hematomas. Worst in calf, active bleed for a week. Doc sealed the bleed by giving me a shot of morphine and applying intense pressure. Every day for 3 days straight.  Even with the morphine that sent me through the roof.
—misc. other sprains, sprains, and cuts requiring stitches  none particularly stand out.

—misc. other sprains, sprains, and cuts requiring stitches  none particularly stand out.

playing slow pitch softball in my early 20s, I was playing 2nd and guy hits a hard grounder at me. there's a runner on 1st so I charge it to try for the double play, or at least get the lead runner.

Uh,  oh.  That could have cost you your life.  You only survived because she didn't drive past a Target, DSW, or an Anthropologie.  You were lucky.

Very lucky.

Shooter, is this you?

I show it to my kids often as dumb shit that can happen with the combination of alcohol and youth.

To be fair, how many of us wouldn't be here on this Earf if it were not for this exact combination?

I was tailgating in Ames and did a fake golf shot. In my backswing, my left knee twisted some how and i fell. Applied ice the rest of the tailgate and went to the game. I stood on one foot the entire game and couldn’t sleep for the life of me that night. Couldn’t even go bar hopping it was so bad. Knee swelled up the size of a cantaloupe. Same night Lagarrette Blount punched the Boise st player so that sorta helped distract me. My dad drove a fan bus there so I hitched a ride back on the bus.X-ray said I “tore some blood veins” or some shit. After a few days laid up on crutches I was able to walk and bowled on it a few weeks later.

oh for cuuuuuute.

Oh, I've had some good ones.

1)  Torn ACL while playing basketball.  My buddy threw up from the sound.  Took my breath away.

2)  Hit by a truck on a motorcycle.  Pavement is hard, as it turns out.  I was really surprised at how loud it is when your head hits the concrete, even in a full-face helmet.  Nothing broken, but a nice concussion, and I hurt in places I didn't even know I had places for about 3 weeks.

3)  Motocross wreck at a track in Houston.  Compound arm fracture, two compressed vertebrae.  A little hard to walk after that one.

4)  Multiple tears in my throwing shoulder labrum while playing baseball.  That one hurts to this day.
