A Fallout TV show is coming to Amazon Prime Video

By Connor Sheridan 44 minutes ago

Now it just needs The Ink Spots

A Fallout TV series is coming to Amazon Prime Video, and it's being made by the production company behind Westworld.

The official Fallout Twitter account broke the news with a brief video that teases the collaboration between Amazon Studios, Kilter Films, and Bethesda Game Studios. In traditional Fallout fashion, the video starts with a close-up shot of an old TV screen, starting with the title cards for the studios then switching over to a test pattern as the sound of televised gunfire, explosions, and screams suddenly cut out.

The video doesn't confirm any details, but the Fallout universe has tons of possibilities for a potential series or film. We could follow a community of survivors hundreds of years after the bombs fall and wipe out civilization, like in most of the Fallout games. We could see more of life in the '50s styled, ultra-imperialist USA of the late 2070s as the great war approaches, which we got to experience ourselves at the beginning of Fallout 4. Or maybe it will be about the continued adventures of Fisto, the security protectron turned sexbot who you can recruit in Fallout: New Vegas.

Kilter Films' portfolio is largely composed of TV series such as Westworld and Person of Interest. As GamesRadar's Bradley Russell observed, Westworld is at its best when it stops taking itself so seriously, so hopefully Kilter's Fallout series will hone right in on the franchise's trademark humor.

We'll let you know when we get more official word on where the three companies are taking the Fallout franchise next.

Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, creators of HBO’s hit Westworld, have announced they are collaborating with Amazon Prime to create a TV series around the Fallout video game franchise. According to Nolan and Joy, they intend to craft a show that showcases “[T]he harshness of the wasteland set against the previous generation’s utopian idea of a better world through nuclear energy.”

Coming out April 12, 2024.  We are about to get an advertising blitz - billboards, Super Bowl (Superb Owl) ads, everything - Amazon is apparently going to really crank up the PR machine for this one.  Feast your eyes on official photos, along with a leaked video from a few months ago.

Stepping out of the vault for the first time in Fallout 3 is an all time great video game moment.  Seeing a similar moment in the trailer gets me excited for this, I hope they do it justice.

The Last of Us was the best TV drama I have seen since Game of Thrones, but this may top it. The style of the Fallout world looks perfect, I just hope the writing and characters are on par with the games. Although, I don't see any way Bethesda would let them take any shortcuts with the story.

I read a report the other day (sorry no link) that explained how they spent a lot of effort designing functional power armor including real jet packs to limit the CGI as much as possible.

That reminds me, tonight would be a good time to start a new game of New Vegas... This show looks like it's going to be amazing. Hopefully they don't fuck it up like RoP.

They’re confident enough that they are bumping it up to tomorrow.  It’s definitely generated a lot of buzz.  Helps that they worked with some of the main folks from the videogames.

Not a review but just general background on "the making of." I never played the game, so this was a good introduction.

Really hoping this is as good as it sounds.

‘Fallout’ Finds the Fun in an Apocalyptic Hellscape
TV’s latest big-ticket video game adaptation, from the creators of “Westworld,” takes a satirical, self-aware approach to the End Times.

The scream was just right — bloodcurdling, if also very funny — and the practical effects crew had finally found the proper volume and trajectory of the water cannon. The idea was to film what might happen if you ripped a man from the throat of a mutant salamander, exploding its guts like a giant water balloon.

All that remained was to decide what color of bile to slather on the actor (Johnny Pemberton) and on the salamander’s many teeth, which nuclear radiation had transformed into rows of humanlike fingers.

Based on observations made during a visit to the Brooklyn set of “Fallout” in early 2023, Amazon had spared no expense to make the show, the latest genre-bending series from Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, the creators of “Westworld.” So it was no surprise when Nolan, on set to direct that chilly afternoon, was presented with not one but some half-dozen buckets of bile to choose from, in a variety of revolting hues. He settled on a pukey pinkish yellow.

“This is the closest thing to comedy that I’ve worked on,” he said later by phone. With writing credits on films like “Memento,” “The Dark Knight” and “The Prestige,” Nolan has tended to skew dark. Comically exploding monster guts — this was new territory.

“It’s a lot of fun,” he said.

A fun apocalypse? Amid all the doom and gloom of most sci-fi spectacles and social media feeds? Yes, please.

Prime Video has announced that “Fallout,” adapted from the retro-futuristic video game franchise of the same name, will premiere all eight episodes on April 10 at 6 p.m. PT.

Though don't Amazon Prime shows usually come out the day around that same time?

Last of Us tv adaption was hugely successful because the game was an immensely well developed story.

Fallout is an immensely well developed ethos that provides a rich canvas for stories.  The Fallout ethos has a strong humor component.  Serious things happen, but there's usually a joke nearby whether subtle or overt.

Maybe I need to go back and play these games.

I've never touched any of them.

I know they are good, but are they Zelda good?

I like them more than Zelda games. I'd say 3, New Vegas, and 4 are all worth playing in 2024. 1&2 if you can take the old school lack of quality of life gaming.

Fallout 4 was the first one I played. I replayed it a couple of times, then tried to play Fallout 3/New Vegas. Couldn't get into them. The backwards leap in graphics just bugged the shit out of me.

To me, it was like playing Zelda: Ocarina on the N64 a few times, then trying to get into Zelda on the NES.
