timely thread.   Wife and I started talking about moving down to either my aunt’s place in Costa Rica (she’s A Tica but splits her time between Chicago and Florida) or leasing our house in Austin and moving to a condo in Canada.  From November thru February.

You WANT to live in Canada from November thru February?

you mean we can't just waltz right into another country and set up shop?

Well, up until about four months ago we could.  Now we're on the list of countries that have handled Covid so poorly that we're not allowed to participate with the rest of the first world.

I was born and raised in the cold.  The weather doesn’t bother me.  What’s about to happen in my country that I love dearly in those months gives me great pause.  As such a little snow in my children’s lives will be a welcomed respite.

I think roving the countryside and visiting WalMarts weekly is the EXACT opposite of what he is trying to accomplish.

It’s only one night a week at Walmart. That’s not the point though, we are both talking about accomplishing the same thing... bettering your scenario compared to where you currently are, Because you have the opportunity to do so.
think about it LL, you will never have a lower opportunity cost to do whatever the hell you want then you do right now. What’s the upside to staying at home, working in a shitty home office and having your kids deal with the shit show that will be school this year, while you live inside like a hermit with no social interaction. That’s what you are leaving behind. That’s your opportunity cost. Fuck that. Roll the dice. Live!
I love Australia btw but no way you should move there- time zone is awful- you will live a life out of sync with your family and it will suck.

Of all the people I thought would crack under this pandemic, OP was not at the top of my list.

TEA said this morning they were going to offer funding for both remote learning and in-person learning this fall.

It's not a matter of cracking.  It's more about the opportunity cost that Wulaw laid out.

Look--Texas is a shitshow.  There's no denying that.  And if the public schools are unavailable because Morath is going all Trumpy, then I have to spend money for a remote private school.

So if I'm having to spend that money anyway, how about exploring other options that are a bit more interesting?

That's partially my thought process.

As opposed to your country abandoning its people to the virus because testing makes us look bad, masks infringe upon some made up constitutional rights and 40% of the population thinks its hoax?  Also the elderly being told to be sacrificed for the economy - sounds like their country abandoned them.

There's only one gigantic twat here.

So we’re measuring patriotism now by % of days of our lives we were physically in the U.S?   Let me guess, leaving Texas periodically for work or leisure means something too right?   Jesus, what a small way to Go through life.

Patriotism is a combination of how hard you hate the media, masks, scientists, and libtards.

Seriously, why not Alaska?  Far enough north and no worries about passport or visa. Cost of living isn't that much more expensive than NZ or Europe.

Right now?  Something about the sun coming up at 4am and not going down until 10pm sounds terrible for sleeping.

On the flipside, you get darkness from 3pm to 9am in the winter!

The door to Canada?

you’re the one who shit the thread and claimed that people who may wish to spend a few months visiting another nation for the betterment of their children were abandoning their country?

my uncle was a submariner during WWII and spends a couple months a year abroad.  Does that means he’s abandoned his nation?   You’re the one with the logic skills of a Dalmatian.

If you plan to move to a country with socialized medicine, such as Canada, you are going to have to put in $200-250k into the healthcare system. My parents looked into moving to Campbell River, on Vancouver Island. Not many countries were you can just go in and "set up shop". Not any of them you would want to live in anyways.

And it still will be worse than that with morath. I say this only because I noticed a Baylor diploma on his wall during an interview yesterday

You came into the thread, added absolutely nothing to it, and called LL a twat because he's considering moving his family out of harm's way for a few months and you're going to try to complain about the thread getting shitted up? K.

No sarcasm: I visited some relatives in Monterrey a couple years ago and thought it was pretty nice. Beautiful mountains around it, and the Garza Garcia district is fancy as hell. Just about a 2 hour drive from the US. Reasonably safe if you’re not a criminal and you stay inside once the sun sets.

I stand by it. What is preventing the OP from staying at home, quarantining, and making a positive impact on the situation? They are simply false threats, and the OP was projecting his anxiety. I’ll check in this thread from time to time to see how it went for him. I’m out when I get engaged with the least stable posters on this board. The thread, not the country for clarity.

Seems like there's a flaw with the plan somewhere in this post.  I can't quite put my finger on it.

Positive impact on the situation? The fuck are you talking about? How does he make a "positive impact on the situation" by staying at home vs. driving to Canada for a bit? Are his neighbors going to suffer a morale loss when they see him and his family get in his car to leave? That's almost as stupid of an assertion as the one that other posters are "projecting anxiety" when you're clearly having an insecurity-based reaction to the thought that our country might have done something not as well as other countries and reacting like a triggered little bitch.

We are about 4 weeks out from this virus burning through the population.

Relocating overseas to avoid it seems extreme.

Just go rent a summah house up in the north east.

You better hope we're not.  3 million cases thus far over 4 months, and we're still watching the Texas numbers like a hawk hoping that hospitals don't get overwhelmed.  In a country of 330 million people we'd need millions more cases to reach herd immunity.  I don't understand how you think this works out from a numbers standpoint.

Seems like this is less about trying to time the virus, and more about taking advantage of society's (maybe temporary?) very high tolerance of remote work for the foreseeable future.  Even after case counts die down, offices will be closed/limited access for several months.

We have jokingly but somewhat seriously are considering our options to move abroad. SO is a founder and her team is fully remote. My job is mostly int'l, and I can switch jobs fairly easily so have looked into the Nordic countries. I think most countries only require $250k -$500k investment locally for special visa....Obviously, not viable for all people....

Folks - this is exhibit A in how you humble-brag.

Very subtle and understated, but checks several boxes - SO is in the c-suite.  OP is a player in their profession and can gain international employment during a worldwide pandemic.  ONLY a $250k-500k investment to pull it off.  I applaud this and give +rep.

Just kidding @LABEVO   !  Rock on and do what make sense.  If you've got the ability to do something like that, grab the adventure.

Maybe the neighbor's wife secretly lusts after him, and if he leaves, she will be dejected and sad and take it out on her poor husband who will post on the internet that he's going to kill his wife?

Wait, does GoLL live next to anyone here?

Maybe less "because of" and more "as a result of."

The newfound ability by US employers that physical office space is not required and WFH is a viable option certainly does make it intriguing for employees to relocate without having to find new jobs.

I'd say there's a lot of tax law he needs to do a lot of research into or pay someone.
